I have to say, I'm amazed by this game's ability to create dystopian modern eras. It has really made me appreciate how relatively NICE our world is compared to what could have been (and routinely IS here).

Or just look at my AAR's, they end up in massive world wars and such. The whole XX century in this mod often consists only of WWI and WWII, which is, however, not necessarily bad for the gameplay.

In what way exactly?

My current game, the great powers were:

A hyper-advanced Britain and Neatherlands both of which kept their colonial empire (Argentina is dutch, India is British. Ghandi got utterly squashed. South Africa is split between them. Australia is British.) and still practices slavery (at one point, Kaapastadt had more slaves than non-slave units in it). They have numerous vassals worldwide (Germany, Mughals, Japan, etc.), and are allied with each other.

Me (Persia): I control all of the middle East as a Zoroastrian empire. I'm actually probably the least bad of the great powers, given that I'm a representative democracy that has managed to unite the middle east (Turkey, China Poland and Mexico are my vassals). I'm also technologically backwards and oh, by the way, I just nuked New York.

The New World Order (aka America): In fairness to me, the people in charge of New York started it. A fascist America (with Congo and Brazil as colonies) that attacked Mexico and took it by Tactical Nuking the entire Mexican army. That region is now an irradiated wasteland and it looks like the nuclear bombardment is just beginnning for both sides of the war. Even after I nuked New York, the refuse to sign any sort of peace with me, even though I'm actually willing to give them cities (I'm going for the Zoroastrian religious victory)

The USSR and Sweden: These nations were kindof ok places to live in, though they were tied in constant warfare with the British-Netherlands alliance, and having trouble keeping their own secssionist border provinces (Poland) in check. That is, up until they collapsed one after the other. Our game now has a mini-broken star scenario of the Independents in Russia. Oh, and the USSR was the first nation to use nukes, against a Japanese city on the Asian mainland. I'm not sure if nukes get deleated on collapse, though if not, then the Independents now have nukes, completing the Broken Star picture.

The Portugese: They somehow survive and are actually thriving, even though the whole world except me and the NWO hate them (they were at war with both the Soviet alliance and the UK alliance). They are semi-democratic IIRC, but they are ALSO slavers, and have kept most of their colonial empire (most of Brazil, Angola, etc.). Also, before the world hated them, they were the darlings of World Congress, which repeatedly gave them cities in the middle of the Congo. As a result, the Congo is a patchwork of Portugese and Congolese cities.

Effectively, its a world of constant warfare, imperialist slaver great powers and lots of nuclear weapons. The UN is useless (as it is in real life) and World Congress was little more than an instrument of imperialism. I'm probably going to die, but its going to be a fun death.

I mean I completely agree Russia was dominating and forcing its way into Europe. It took Poland, Sweden, Germany, France, the Netherlands, and some other land. Then, it collapsed and Austria took Germany while Britain moved into Amsterdam and Normandy. I had already taken Iberia as Brazil. Then, the world was mainly controlled by three people, Me on top as Brazil, then Britain, and then America. The latter two were at war with just about every small civ and were throwing nukes all over the place. Then I initiated my invasion of Britain and totally wiped it out with nukes and walked in and took all of the British Isles and Normandy, forcing them out of Europe altogether.
