The shogun strikes back!

Nice set DE! However, there is one detail I need to bring to our attention...

MONTY ALERT!

and I thought we were to tech aesthetics ... will take a look at the save later ;)

Monty alert? It was to be expected with us daring to claim his ivory ;)

Cheers

edit:  Shyuhe

... Me and Ras have decided to let the barb do whatever it wants for one turn, so we can see what techs each AI has for trade, so this can be discussed properly...

Have a good time, Ramesses
It's fun when it's not you. Oh, wait... Monty is here to fill the void. :)
 I just realized I'm confusing my SG's. I'm up in the other one, not this :p
 You need a personal assistant. :)
... Me and Ras have decided to let the barb do whatever it wants for one turn, so we can see what techs each AI has for trade, so this can be discussed properly...
Yep, fair enough.

Hum... we still haven't any granary in 750 BC  and 3 workers
I guess we know on what we need to focus... The barb attacked and loose...
Here is the tech screen, really nothing worth it right now.

Civ4ScreenShot0817-2.jpg

Charly is Monty's worst ennemy, but we are dead last in power... We need more troops...

tech: masonry -> aesthetics?
@Rolo: you should probably whip the lib in Osaka this turn ;)
Also I redirected EPs on Charly and Monty

Roster duty:
Rolo -> up!
Sweetacshon ->on deck!

Cheers

I would trade writing -- sailing with Pericles if possible. Sailing will give us better trade routes and it's not worth enough beakers to trigger "worst enemy" trading penalties. We may have to sink a turn or two in to researching it first though.

Regarding troops - we are protective. Let's hook up that stone and spam archers and walls. That will protect us from Monty and we can manipulate diplo for the rest.

All good points Shyuhe :). have you numbers about worst ennemy trading penalty? I always wonder what I can do, and what will really piss off the AI...

No I don't have the numbers, this is all from personal experience :p I think the worst enemy penalty kicks in based on how much value your trade with the enemy has. So if it's a cheap tech or little gold, you won't trigger the penalty. As far as I can tell, pre-alpha techs aren't worth enough to trigger the penalty.

Notice that Charly has monopoly maths; is he building HG?

"We don't want to trade this technologie just yet" he said... so no it's a monopoly problem ;)
He would say "We have our reasons" if he was building the wonder...

Cheers

This game looks a lot more promissing for the Japanese :p

Short resume:

Finished masonry, traded writing for Sailing with Monty and teched Maths ( Japan needs big rock throwers ;) ). Shaka dowed HRE but no ask for help so far. The religious map is heavily divided as you will see in the screenshots below:

Queues in Kyoto and Tokyo are place holders, as much as the tech ( I can see we wanting Currency and/or HBR before construction ). And, as soon as advisable, chop the jungle of the phant camp NE of Satsuma

This looks to be a much more warlike land than the AN one.... Cool

OK, I guess I'm up. The thing is I'll be traveling... I should still be able to play, but if I inexplicably don't turn up, you know why, and just skip me. :)

Haven't checked the save yet, but I'm thinking currency next, judging by the gpt. What are the chances of Gilgs or Charlie teching it for trade, tho? Otherwise, it's put in some cottages, put a blocker in that desert somewhere (any ideas?), and perhaps a wonder or 3. Did we decide where we wanted Maoi to go? What else were we thinking of? TGLib, Parth? Or am I getting SGs mixed up again.

By now we're at a decision point again to take a path for the Classical Age. We can either take the classical warpath, we tech construction and HBR then go for Monty with cats, ellies and a few foot soldiers. We also have the land to go economy instead, though; then we tech Currency rather than war techs and kill Monty with samurai.

Our economy looks to be in great shape (for Japanese terms, that is  ), we're only behind Gil (by the looks of it he has CoL) and Charle in tech.

Thoughts on our cities;

-Kyoto's by now pumping less settlers and does not need the extra food, so we should prepare Kyoto for bureaucracy by cottaging over the farms.
-Osaka can be grown to its happy cap with coastal tiles (or grassland cottages) and once it's there put two scientists to work.
-Same for Tokyo. Work the high-commerce cottage tiles and scientists.
-Kagoshima is an excellent production city with two food tiles and a bonus production resource, and lots of hills to give production in the early ages. If we are planning on a win before industrial age bonuses kick in this looks to be a good spot for the Heroic Epic.
-Satsuma can go in a lot of directions. It can be used for science or production, whatever we want it to do.

Monty is busy already. So building up a few catas/elephants may not be a bad idea anyways. If he decides to go after somebody else, we can backstab him and pick up a few cities before he can move his troops to respond to our attack. Diplo's going to be a mess this game anyways.

Looking at the map, the desert area sucks so I wouldn't bother settling it. Maybe check out the land NE of Satsuma to see if there's anything worthwhile there? Otherwise, I'd settle something near the rice to the west. Unless we really want the stone for something...

Hi,

I agree with Shyuhe, let's build some troops (cats, axes, phants) just in case Monty feels greedy... We thus need HBR after construction.
About wonders, it's been few sets where we could have gone this way, but now I feel it's too late: we have expanded near Monty, increasing our maintenance and likely bringing a dow on us... so I think priorities are troops and eco now (so one of currency, COL after phants enabling techs). I would prefer COL as it opens philo bulb and CS.
I marked some sites in the desert area if we feel like settling some (I read Shyue post after that so ...). There is one site with 2 fishes, rice and iron which could be worth it. :)

Cheers,
Raskolnikov

Roster duty:

Sweetacshon -> up!
Shyuhe -> on deck!

-gpt@50%, and we still want 4 more cities in our own territory = not so good economically in my book. Anyway, construction it is. Playing now.

I played until construction finished, and was cowering from Monty the whole time.:twitch: Any builder plans I had were tempered by fear, so settlers, workers, and cottages were pretty much set aside for archers, chariots, iron, stone, and later spears, axes, and walls. such is life next door to Monty.

If he is to attack when the peace deal ends next turn, he will have a stack on either side of Satsuma, so it will be whip walls and sit tight for 5ish turns til reinforcements arrive. Good luck. :) If not then the plan, I suppose, is to continue buiding the economy, tech HBR then CoL or currency, bolster the border with melee troops, and fill in some city gaps.
Spoiler :
Turn 147/750 (395 BC) [24-Feb-2009 00:34:08]
Tokyo begins: Archer (5 turns)
Kyoto begins: Chariot (5 turns)
Sweetacshon: Looking pretty good, but go for chariot in Kyoto and research in Tokyo for now.

After End Turn:
Osaka finishes: Lighthouse

Attitude Change: Pericles (Greece) towards Raskolnikov (Japan), from 'Cautious' to 'Pleased'

Turn 148/750 (380 BC) [24-Feb-2009 00:47:03]
Osaka begins: Chariot (6 turns)

Kagoshima grows to size 3

Other Player Actions:
Attitude Change: Shaka (Zululand) towards Pericles (Greece), from 'Cautious' to 'Annoyed'

Diplomacy (Tribute Demand): Montezuma (Aztec) demands that Raskolnikov (Japan) gives Mathematics; Raskolnikov AGREES.
Tech traded to Montezuma (Aztec): Mathematics
Kyoto begins: Settler (15 turns)
Sweetacshon: Monty asks for maths. I think about it for a while: we ae 60% of his power, still don't have iron, are stretched thin, and he is a loony. +1 and 10 turns peace should give us a nice buffer, so I grudgingly say yes. He'll pay for it soon enough.
Civ4ScreenShot0073-1.jpg

A Cottage was built near Tokyo
Sweetacshon: Start a slow settler in Kyoto. Also the iron is finally in range. 4 workers aren't enough!!

Turn 152/750 (320 BC) [24-Feb-2009 01:09:23]
A Camp was built near Satsuma
Sweetacshon: And would you look at this. Maths seems a fair price for not having to deal with it - 2 archers defending here would've been in trouble. - it is Monty's stack, which will continue to dance up and down the blue line for the rest of the turnset. (s/s from final turn)
Civ4ScreenShot0081.jpg

Kyoto begins: Archer (5 turns)
Sweetacshon: Delay settler for another archer.
Sweetacshon: Some of the fog was cleared.
Sweetacshon: Whipped the granary in Kagoshima for 1 pop.

The whip was applied in Kagoshima
Osaka grows to size 5
Tokyo grows to size 7
Kagoshima finishes: Granary

Turn 153/750 (305 BC) [24-Feb-2009 01:15:24]
Kagoshima begins: Barracks (19 turns)
Tokyo begins: Worker (9 turns)

After End Turn:
Osaka finishes: Chariot

Turn 154/750 (290 BC) [24-Feb-2009 01:19:49]
Osaka begins: Warrior (3 turns)
Sweetacshon: Monty split his force, and we still have 2 jags, 2 chariots and a spear heading south. :o
Sweetacshon: I'm recalling the fogbusting troops as well, just in case Monty is thinking of getting frisky.

Turn 155/750 (275 BC) [24-Feb-2009 01:26:39]
Diplomacy: Ramesses II (Egypt) offers to trade Open Borders to Raskolnikov (Japan) for Open Borders
Diplomacy: Raskolnikov (Japan) rejects trade of Open Borders to Ramesses II (Egypt) for Open Borders
A Mine was built near Kagoshima
Sweetacshon: Hmm, his stack has turned back. Perhaps a false alarm.
Sweetacshon: Rameses is his worst enemy, so perhaps I was jumping at shadows, but he's burnt me many times.

After End Turn:
Satsuma grows to size 3

Other Player Actions:
Civics Change: Ramesses II(Egypt) from 'Despotism' to 'Representation'

Turn 156/750 (260 BC) [24-Feb-2009 01:30:31]
Satsuma begins: Walls (7 turns)
Sweetacshon: ...and the stack turns around AGAIN! I put a turn into walls in Satsuma, just in case it needs whipping, although the stone is 5 turns off (why has it taken so long? 4 workers!)

After End Turn:
Kyoto finishes: Archer
Kagoshima grows to size 3

Turn 157/750 (245 BC) [24-Feb-2009 01:34:40]
Diplomacy: Shaka (Zululand) offers to trade Open Borders to Raskolnikov (Japan) for Open Borders
Diplomacy: Raskolnikov (Japan) rejects trade of Open Borders to Shaka (Zululand) for Open Borders
Sweetacshon: Shaka wants, and yet is not getting, OBs, just like Rameses previously.
Sweetacshon: Monty turns around again. This is not so fun, but at least he hasn't yet positioned himself for the "classic pincers movement" in the case of his DoW, so Satsuma should hold... if...
Satsuma begins: Walls (6 turns)
Sweetacshon: Back to the granary, but the walls can be whipped if necessary.
Kyoto begins: Axeman (7 turns)

After End Turn:
Hinduism has spread: Tokyo

Other Player Actions:
Attitude Change: Shaka (Zululand) towards Charlemagne (Holy Rome), from 'Annoyed' to 'Furious'

Turn 158/750 (230 BC) [24-Feb-2009 01:40:46]

Turn 160/750 (200 BC) [24-Feb-2009 01:44:40]
Diplomacy (War Request): Charlemagne (Holy Rome) asks Raskolnikov (Japan) to declare war on Shaka (Zululand); Raskolnikov REFUSES.
Civ4ScreenShot0078.jpg

Research begun: Horseback Riding (14 Turns)
Osaka begins: Spearman (7 turns)
Chariot 2 (Osaka) (Chariot) promoted: Combat I
While attacking in Japanese territory at Satsuma, Chariot 2 (Osaka) (2.72/4) defeats Barbarian Archer (Prob Victory: 86.6%)
Sweetacshon: So Monty's little SoD remains. The treaty ends next turn, so... who knows. It may be worth it to put a turn into walls in Osaka as well.
Sweetacshon: Tech is set to HR at 0%, as 3 more turns will be enough to upgrade a warrior to an axe, which might be a wise precaution right now.At least the first spear is on the scene, and another spear and 2x axe aren't far away, which should hold Monty's first wave.
Sweetacshon: ..if he decides to attack. Am I being paranoid?
