The Very-Many-Questions-Not-Worth-Their-Own-Thread Thread XLIII

A wired mouse never needs batteries!

Nope. The Renaissance authors I read use it. I would have to think OED ranks it as obsolete. I'll go check.

Yeah. Any time after the 16th c, they regard it as "literary." (i.e. affectedly old-fashioned; only used by poets and only b/c earlier poets used it).

Too bad, in some ways. Maybe we could get it back in regular use.

Associated specifically with the perceived curvature of the sky. Which is something one is sometimes aware of.

Yeah, they want their title to have an olde worlde poetic resonance.

Do they use the word "welkin" in any of the lyrics, or just in the title?

I’ll check tomorrow. Have to read the lyrics again; listening is (sometimes) futile for black metal (shrieking, growling etc.).

My guess is in the album title though.

Fast scan says one reference to the album title in the sixth song; The Acclamation of Bonds. First verse.

Vide, ravens caw in reverence.
Anthems to the Welkin at dusk.
In celebration of the few, the kin,
beyond flesh, beyond words.
Those of the core, beyond gods,
as gods received.

So they liked that lyric and made it the album title.

Lots of thee thy thou O’ in the first song but not in the rest.

Seems pretentious maybe but the music makes up for this.

Fun fact; Emperor will perform in Oslo next summer. The festival called Tons of Rock.

Do you* use the word welkin?

* Native English speakers.

Well, now I know where Bethesda probably got the name for Welkynd stones from. :)

I think my modem died. No service on tv and net. One indicator blinking green. Normally cont. green + orange for the different LAN etc. So it’s dead, right?

Tried;

Power switch off for 5 mins then on
Different power cable
Reset modem
Call neighbour if they have the same problem but no

In that case, you may need to consider cultural anthropology sources. I've got some of that stuff in my personal library, but it's not the sort of thing I can copy and send in a PM.

I mean . . . why did anybody think to put a cradle in the tree top to begin with?

A moment's reflection would tell you that's a recipe for disaster.

And then to rock it, to boot!

If you need to garden/cook/farm/shepherd/whatever while (s)he sleeps, not everywhere is without coyotes, feral dogs, feral cats, badgers, etc. Narrows it to fliers and climbers? Natural gentle rocking motion?

Probably has some symbolic meaning I have no clue about.

I caved in and finally got a wired mouse. Life is peaceful now

New question: is there a good VPN I can install on my laptop?

What is your motivation? Cost or quality?

Mullvad is still considered the best, IIRC. Be wary of any VPN (like Nord) that advertises on major platforms.

What is the problem with Nord?

Loosely speaking, more users equals less resources when talking about a VPN. There's a performance hit, and more traffic will slow you down further. VPNs also tend to use big blocks of IP addresses, and some savvy companies will restrict those blocks. You especially see streaming companies doing that because they don't want you evading regional restrictions. VPNs with lower profiles have a higher chance of evading those restrictions. Some companies block you even if you're not using an IP address from another country (Disney+ is known to do this).

NordVPN in particular averages a speed hit of around 50% (e.g., if you usually get 100 mbps, you're likely to get around 50 mbps on NordVPN). They aggressively market and buy ads and incentivize people with bottom-shelf prices, which all leads to inflated users and reduced service.
