TIL: Today I Learned

And sometimes the same, I guess. I thought death sentences generally had to be unanimous, but hey. Alabama being Alabama?

Today I learned about Sandy Island.

Spoiler :
It doesn't exist.

It's no coincidence that it is an island proven not to exist by Australians.

Was Sodom and Gomorrah around 4,000 years ago or 12,800?

Or was this a different event?
Well the YDB event referenced regarding this small village, Abu Hureyra, was not a direct hit destruction since they found lots of human stuff to excavate. It was also pre Gobleki Tepe. S&G, as described were walled cities with far more sophistication. And they were hit directly. So no, they are not the same event. We know that Abu Hureyra existed since the remains were excavated before the dam. S&G? I don't believe they have been actually found.

I suppose thats true, plus Sodom and Gomorrah are kinda dated by Abraham's place in history, or assumed place. A bunch of kings at war and all that too. But if Sodom and Gomorrah were done in by an airburst that would mean two such events in the span of less than 9,000 years. Doesn't provide us modern folk much comfort.

Air bursts get recorded. Any of them found at or over the area?

We get massive airbursts fairly regularly and really have only gotten lucky a big city hasn't taken a direct hit in recorded history. I would say 2 cities/sites destroyed by meteors in 9,000 is not at all unreasonable, all other things aside.

Somebody found evidence of a bronze age airburst over the northern Dead Sea, 4-4500 years ago which is in Abraham's ballpark. Stuff like spherules, extreme heating followed quickly by cooling, pottery shards and other material showing exposure to heat more on one side, leveled walls kinda like how Tunguska knocked down trees emanating outward from a focal point above and not an earthquake. And I think they found evidence of a tsunami as the Dead Sea was roiled by shockwaves.

Imagine Tunguska over Beijing or NYC, millions dead in an instant.

Who is "somebody"? Where is the evidence now? Evidence of a Tsunami where? In the Dead sea? One would think that Abraham would have noticed an airburst on his own.

Wasn't today but today rather than working I was thinking about something I recently learned about: third-hand smoking.
Experiments have been conducted that show that the clothes of smokers leave particles of chemicals from cigarette smoke on furniture.
I predict a future where smokers are forced to wear disposable clothing like that sometimes given to prisoners in crime dramas.
This will allow non-smokers (especially ex-smokers like me) to feel smug and superior without making any real difference since the level of chemical residue was quite low.

I cant remember who, it was maybe a year ago probably from https://phys.org/ which is my goto science news site. I haven't seen any updates but the evidence of tsunami was a salt layer at the northern end of the Dead Sea supposedly deposited by a sloshing back and forth as the shock wave hit the water. 'Abraham' did notice, somebody wrote the vision of fire and brimstone falling from the sky into the Bible.

Since airbursts are so deadly to basically everything in the vicinity, how did anyone survive long enough to record anything? Are you going to tell us that Lot's wife turned into a layer of salt, rather than a pillar?

is that because the shock wave is directed more toward the ground?
A steeper angle would have seen it get closer to the ground before it burst. As it happened, it exploded at a very high altitude so the worst of the shockwave only broke glass instead of leveling buildings.

If it came in at a very steep angle, could it actually hit the ground before it burst?

If I was standing near a cave entrance and saw a meteor zooming by and didn't stand around to watch the spectacle I'd have a good chance of surviving if I wasn't too close to the blast. As for Lot's wife, this event was far enough back in time for the Sumerian/Akkadian language to be a factor and the word for salt could also mean vapor since both were associated with the vapor filled salt marshes bordering the northern end of the Persian Gulf. So, a pillar of salt or a pillar of vapor.
