Tintin: The Movie(s)

'Cuz I'm always late to finding these things out...

A second trailer went up around July. Twice as long, and provides a better picture of the characters.

I am still utterly blown away by the animation for this.

I can't wait for this. I remember going to the local library and reading every Tintin book they had, several times over.

I would have liked to see the Professor, but I imagine he has no place in the stories this movie is based on. I really don't remember, it's been so many years since I've read them...

They haven't announced a Calculus, though, AFAIK. Which makes me extremely sad. No lulzy shark jokes?

Calculus is the funniest one :(

Something I've been wondering.

Here's Professor Calculus as seen in the books:

And here's an unidentified man glimpsed in the respective trailers:

His hair is grey, and I can't make out the shape of his head, but the beard, glasses and clothes are a close match...

Unfortunately my memory of the series is a bit rusty, and I don't have the books on hand, so I can't double-check the sequences and/or if this is a different character. :undecide:

That's not Calculus, that looks like the wallet thief who stole the twins' wallet, as well as that of the Oiseaux brothers (I don't know their name in English, the Bird Brothers?)

Drat, I knew he looked familiar. Aristides Silk, isn't it?

And yes, les frères Loiseau are the Bird brothers in English.

Yup.

They're skipping The Shooting Star but Captain Chester's Sirius is the ship they use to go after Red Rackham's treasure. I wonder if they'll just say "screw it" and use the Karaboudjan/Jebel Amilah for that instead.

We're not interested in that device.

I hope they don't do the whole "Introduce back-story of main characters" thing like they do in superhero movies and just jump into the story line.

Tin Tin needs no introduction and if you do, you should have read the whole series first.

It really looks like an animated Raiders, doesn't it? I just might see this in theaters.

Regarding the second review, frankly, I have little sympathy for its complaints about the transition between media. "Boohoo, films don't give you the time and space to follow the story and appreciate the art at your own pace. It's a travesty to art and literature!" I can't decide whether this is fanboyism gone mad or just typical bourgeois-like reaction to the violation of his sacred medium.

And I find the conjectures about the "deeper, darker signals" in the books a bit wacky and at best interesting but quite irrelevant. So that leaves the last few paragraphs. Those bring up a few points worth worrying about, but that's a rather poor review overall.

The first review complains about the animation. I guess that's a matter of taste. Frankly, I prefer Herge's drawings as well, but if someone can do better, then I guess he wouldn't be who he is, right?

Except they didn't do better :mischief:.
