TT01: Beating Demigod

Where do you play, (if indeed you still would)? If you're looking for an occasional game with a mostly sane partner, I play regularly on BBO as capn1100 (a name earned from my teammates when I exhibited why I had to type "mostly" in the sentence above).

I used to play at StepBridge, a Dutch internet bridge site. I still play bridge a lot but only "live". It just beats internet bridge.

In fact, I discovered civ (civ 1 that is) in the early nineties because some friends at my bridge club told me about it.

You should take a look at www.bridgebaseonline.com. It's a pretty good site. I'd be happy to play with you there some if you wanted to.

work is still eating me up, so i couldn´t have a look at the save. but for me nearly everything is said and discussed. get the armies over, as many inf as possible (although they´re not decisive) and kill at least some french before they get inf, too. not that it is going to help them a lot when they have it...
re our rep... personally i´d prefer a few ship attacks on our convoy and don´t break a peace deal. if we go for that,... oh well, let it be. but adding a few more frigates gives us the same effect in my eyes, the troops will be safe and land overseas.
alliance with incas - sure.

4) I'm doubtful it will last long enough to make better ships an issue.

Possibly. But arty moves slowly in enemy territory. That with the wide spacing the AI uses. 1 city destroyed every 2 to 3 turns I would guess. In the end it will speed up. Without looking at the save, I guess some 60 turns of fun. They will be advancing in tech in the meantime. The point of the ships is that adding reinforcements to our initial landing force may be frustrated by destroyers or worse. I'd like to counter that eventuality.

Once we get them out of democracy, their research will slow considerably, as it will with every tile we pillage; there's no harm in going for better ships, I just doubt we'll get that far. If we do, they won't have the oil to build them as long as we keep on pillaging.

Edit: If we can successfully cut-off their Saltpetre sometime soon, they won't be building any more Frigates either. I don't have the save open atm - is it feasable?

May be feasible. Problem now is that with inca on their side they have plenty between them. I think there were only 1 or 2 salt sources in France, will check. We would need armies to sit on them to keep them cut off though.

I will check save soon.

Edit: They have two saltpeter sources native. One is in the desert on their northeast coast, next to Amiens; this is the likely site of our landing assuming we go west to attack France. The second source is in their north-central mountains, between Avignon, Cherbourg, and Orleans. That seems like a likely candidate for our first army to go park on.

They also have two visible sources of horses (Paris, and between Avignon and Dijon), iron (Besancon and between Dijon and Lyons), and coal (Grenoble and Rheims). The only good news is that they have no cities founded on resources, so in theory everything can be pillaged.

Not that I can see. I don't think we need to make peace to get across, but may want to do it anyway.

I'd do it by putting armies together (3 per army, you know!), sending them over for a mass pillage run, and then send whatever artillery and others we can send as a second wave--that would give us time to do some meaningful pillagery and time to upgrade our cannons. But that's just me.

Ok, I'm finished, but it'll be another few hours until I can post.

There's nothing that will need discussing, IMO, so if someone has a free evening...........

OK, here's the save; I'm afraid I'm short on time, and I have little inclination to give a turn-by-turn account of what must be the most uneventful set that I've played in years.

However, it's all set for the fun to start with the next player.

So, the salient points:

We are pulling four turn techs with zero on the science slider, and are currently three turns away from The Corporation. I pre-built for the ToE in Pasagarde - it was making 73 shields after it got a CP, and building anything else was wasting too many shields - and it will be finished in four turns.

I have left movement points on all home-based units, ready for the next player to do with as he wishes. There is a stack of 10 or 11 Galleons, with Frigate support, though I've seen nothing of the French navy. There is one unfilled Army, and Infantry to fill it, for those of you that wanted a bit more protection for the Arty, of which there is a stack ready to go. There are extra Cavs if you feel their need, and more on the former Viking island, the scene of my only combat.

I've also stacked most of the Workers; to be honest, there is little that is worth the effort to improve - just a few mines that might be turned to irrigation, and we don't really need the extra one or two specialists that will give.

I have pillaged the entire French core right back to the Stone Age. They appear to have gassed most of their Cavs taking three Incan cities, and they cannot build more; indeed, all I've recently seen heading to Incan lands are LB's and Rifles.

With six Cav Armies, and a stack of Arty on the way, there is no real reason why I should get to play another set in this game.

I'm having problems with 'Paint', so could someone put up some screenies?

Tonight I can.

4 turns at 0% science. Me likey.

What two freebies are we grabbing from the ToE? The usual Hoovers? Or are we content with our production and want to move on to funner things to produce?

Hoover if we have the factories to justify it, since we probably won't even need Tanks. Then again, Tanks are pretty fun. I'm okay either way.

I kind of assumed that we'd take Steel/Refining as our freebies - didn't TT want better ships? We only have a few factories, and they have - or will soon have - CP's so Hoover seems unnecessary.

However, it makes little or no difference - this game is all over bar the shouting.

I looked at the save, things look very good. The pillaging must really hurt the French!

I kind of assumed that we'd take Steel/Refining as our freebies - didn't TT want better ships?

If we're doing 4 turn research with the science slider at 0 I don't think it matters all that much. I was thinking of better ships because the one threat I see is us not being able to get our troops over safely. I think neither Hoover nor tanks are necessary to win this. I'd say go for it now.

Tonight I can.

I can probably play a set in the weekend. DWetzel, will you take it before that?

I can take it, in theory. I'd promised to get the screenies up, but obviously that didn't happen.

Not much to discuss, it seems...

I'll go for Steel/Refining, and thence to Combustion and maybe Flight? Figure that makes the most sense to have a few units to mop up rather than having to transport stuff across water. Not that we should need much, but what we can get may as well be useful.

Yeah, it was a threat that never materialized; I forgot to mention that I made peace with Inca, then allied them against France - I figure that's where all the French Frigates went; I didn't see any at all when I took the Armies over.
