I'm becoming sort of a broken record, and I didn't mind the UI that much (except city banners), but having seen what UI we could have got if, the beta version wasn't scrapped, made me realise how large of an impact would a prettier UI make on my perception of the game. To request them to make a completely new, better UI seems kinda extreme, but they already have!

For everyone who voted UI, I made a thread with more detailed and specific options so we can hopefully give the devs (or modders) more constructive information.

From some gameplay I've seen thus far, AI leaders resort and react by IMMEDIATE declaration of war it seems. Not sure if that was by design choice, but maybe it varies from leader to leader. Makes me hesitant to engage much with anyone if they're so mercurial or easily ill-tempered.

All of the options from the pole need attention, balance perhaps the least since there is no way to get numbers equally valuable, but creating a strong meta is also not ideal.
UI looks really not what I was hoping for from a game of this name and price.
Lack of Large maps is criminal and the generator of those looks like it doesn't really understand what it's generating.
AI doesn't have to be a threat all the time, but I'm seeing behavior lacking it's understanding of the game.
Graphics, however nice on their own, with such cluster of sprawl feels too dense and it's loosing readability.
Leaders experiencing clipping is less jarring than getting split mid animation I suppose, but I see some flickering in Diplomacy screen sometimes.

I put graphics even though UI and map generation are probably more critical to enjoyment, because I just can’t play Augustus with that face.

Maps, balance and UI are the easiest for modders to deal with. Graphics bugs are hard for modders to deal with and AI is all but impossible for modders to fix. Therefore the dev team should focus on AI issues, then graphics issues.

However SEV1 bugs (crashes, lockups, failure to start, severe performance problems) should all of course receive maximum hotfix priority.

True, maybe it wasn't perfect, but still WAY better than the current one, where everything is grey. Map generation also needs a lot of work. I'm a fan of Continents and Islands script with 10 players, and I'd like to see something more creative than 2 huge blocks.

Thankfully, both UI and map generation can be enhanced/revamped in future patches/mods.

In all honesty I say I want better maps but well over half of my games tended to be on one of the map packs downloaded from here (the 'yet another map pack', the earth maps with a similar name and 'got lakes' in particular)

I imagine the Modders will produce cracking maps again if the tools are there

Can you remind me, where can I see the beta version UI?

It's tied between balance (the community is sure to find a lot of exploits a smaller team that Firaxis by nature is compared to sales, didn't) and UI for me.

I’m really concerned about maps, and hopeful that the blocky continents we’ve been seeing are because the map script has still been a work in progress.

On the topic of maps, I have read that all the main civs are on one main continent every game to enable the distant lands mechanic to work

Does that mean we essentially have a terra map every game, no islands maps etc?

There are civs on each half of the map, but it seems only the old world civs can compete in all four legacy paths, as the new world civs are excluded from competing in exploration age in the treasure fleet legacy path. But as for the mirroring, I feel like we've been told it can be set how it looks in the settings and that it doesn't need to be 100% mirror continents?

I want to see troops drowning by the flocks when crossing navigable rivers, when the first 'Dragons and Tides' expansion will come out in one year from now, to then see people complain they cant build bridges or pontoons, but by then it will be too late to implement because roads are a thing of the past... it's all so lovely. I'll have a cup of tea.
It's funny ground troops can't cross a mountain range or travers a cliff, but everyone is miraculously Jesus Christ and can walk on the waters, or even better, transform into a mini-fleet of ships instantenously... the Exodus scenario is out of question I guess...

Advanced movement buttons, and right click for all units, so we can move them in stacks or formations, is also quite important add to make.
The UI is a bit confusing, an old style right-click and waterfall options text choices in alternative would be great.

Thanks, I guess I'll have to watch the videos again

It sounds like the old island maps I used to play (sometimes I just wanted an isolated start) are a thing of the past

I'll watch the videos, thanks again
