Thanks, I guess I'll have to watch the videos again

It sounds like the old island maps I used to play (sometimes I just wanted an isolated start) are a thing of the past

I'll watch the videos, thanks again
No problem! There is so many videos out there now, it's hard to remember where and what. :)

Some of the forward settling by AI also looks a little bit extreme in preview videos. Really hoping this isn't how they behave in the retail version. After playing with loyalty for so long it would suck to go back to a world where you have to be constantly at war to stop the AI dropping settlers in the dumbest, most vulnerable spots every 5 minutes.

Renaming cities feels like such a strange omission, but didn't that happen at Civ VI launch too? I seem to recall something like that.

Anyway, maps are definitely the priority aside from that. Better tech UI can come right after that.

More map types, also a "Rename city" feature should return.
Agreed. I'm really looking forward to a True Start Map.
And I'd love to see a map in which the Homelands sink as the Crisis at the end of Exploration, forcing you to scramble to colonize the Distant Lands

It's another point for my pet conspiracy theory that Firaxis deliberately focuses on fundamentals and omits small QoL stuff because of demands from 2K that leave them short on time for proper design, and then does the QoL stuff post-release, justifying their time spent on it to 2K by pointing at the people in the community that are asking for it.

I'm becoming sort of a broken record, and I didn't mind the UI that much (except city banners), but having seen what UI we could have got if, the beta version wasn't scrapped, made me realise how large of an impact would a prettier UI make on my perception of the game. To request them to make a completely new, better UI seems kinda extreme, but they already have!
The city banners shown in that build aren't great either. Well, that's harsh. I kinda like them, but there's a lot of verticality that is a pretty drastic departure from past games (the city banners we are getting are more in-keeping with past games). And even then there are still floating numbers (that if they had a background, would obscure more screen space) and whatnot.

I do think the current banners need some kind of polish though. And I'm not sold on the grey / black throughout the entire UI either, mainly because I think the contrast doesn't come through strong enough. The gold doesn't stand out and the grey at times is often too pale, when it should be closer to black (or some other dark shade of colour). I like the principle (I'm a big fan of "flat" UIs in general, as unpopular as some may find them), but the execution is a bit hodgepodge here.

I'd say UI or maps. I don't really care about maps myself, but they're a big thing that presumably require dedicated programmer resources, and as such for a post-launch priority (when they have the most developers still available), that strikes me as the "logical" choice.

There’s also the slippery slope cop-out in the form of “no rush, mods will fix it”.

Firaxis has never said that and I'm sure they don't believe it, either. Mod users are a minority, not a majority. And with Civ 7, they are putting a big emphasis on version parity and crossplay across many different platforms where modding isn't even possible (all the consoles).
