What are you working on now?

I recently finished working with a graphic designer to finally give my business a logo after putting it off for over two years. It looks pretty rad.
I would call it awesome! Your artist did a fine job. :)

First draft of my book is at two chapters to go.
Tim, unless the chapters are very long, you will probably need more than two chapters. :p

Its been hellish huh? My dad said we should look back at 68 for a more turbulent one. I started looking at the events of '68 and other than the RFK and King assassinations its pretty easy to find parallel events.
The parallels are pretty eerie, right down to the heightened space program activity - including a moon program.

The past and present definitely rhyme.

Trying to read and understand "Artificial Inteligence: A modern approach" and trying to find time to end a free course by harvard called Introduction to Artificial Intelligence with Python.

It's a while since I decided I must understand Artificial Inteligence basis, but I need time in the sense I need having 2 or 3 hours free, without interruptions, to read a chapter or listen to a lecture, but I am not able to find so much free time in a row. This summer I have had 3 vacation weeks on which my wife had to work but I used them to try to relax and rest my brain without too much success

Working on various Warhammer-related projects in my personal life. I have managed to successfully convert my wife and both daughters into Warhammer fans.

Professionally I have a couple business ideas I'm kicking around and researching. I'm trying to get out of this working for someone else crap.

I've been writing a science fiction short story, and brushing up on my C++ and Python skills, as well as some Linux. A friend of mine gave me one of those Raspberry Pi thingies and I want to turn it into a computer status display.
I relatively recently got into fiddling with Raspberry Pis and I have to say I think they are awesome. I've mentioned it in the videogames thread, but I currently use one to automate my Minecraft server backups as well as to be a map server for my world accessible by the other members of the server. I also set up an FTP server on it, so they can access the backups. For a while I even ran my server on the 4gb version of the RPi, and it worked well enough until we went above 4 simultaneous players.

Another little project I had running for a while was a script that hooked into the Open Weather API and sent me a text message every morning with the weather forecast. Two additional projects I'm looking at are getting a dedicated RPi for a NAS, and running a Discord bot.

I have another RPi which is serving as my Pihole, and it is doing excellent work blocking a significant number of ads and trackers across my entire network. In conjunction with Ublock Origin, we pretty much don't have ads any more on our computers, although I'm still to figure out how to complete my blocking goals on our mobile devices.

Congratulations man! That's awesome.

Yes and yes. There's been a slight decline in rents with Covid but not much as these apartments cater to upper middle class professionals that have been largely insulated from the economic downturn. If we were willing to move into LA proper or one of the directly-adjacent towns, it's a whole different story and rents there are down quite a lot. Unfortunately that would put us out of commuting range for the Mrs when she goes back to in-person classes next year so it's not an option even though I would consider it.

I do plan on reaching out to some of the landlords in the next month or so once we've narrowed down the list of complexes to choose from. Most of the landlords are faceless megacorps though so I have next to no bargaining/negotiating leverage unless the downturn gets significantly worse.
The company that owns my building has buildings all across Canada, including Quebec, so the customer service agents have to be fluent in French. There have been a few times when I've called them after hours and ended up talking to someone in Montreal, 4 provinces east of here.

There will be leasing agents, though, and they're the ones to keep in touch with. I'm fortunate that the leasing agent here used to be the manager, and we've always gotten along reasonably well (even though my mold situation three years ago wouldn't have been so bad if he'd called in a plumber when I first reported my suspicions, instead of waiting).

There are leasing agents here as well but they have 0 ability to negotiate in any manner or do anything outside of the proscribed rules and procedures. Or at the very least, that's been my luck in dealing with them.

That is really neat. I'm just learning how to work mine, but I think for what I want to do, it requires a little bit of electronics knowledge. So I ordered some books. Amazon to the rescue!

I've been plugging away at a new scenario for Civ2 about the Cold War. It takes full advantage of lua scripting and I'm pleased with how it is coming along. Crazy to think that this old game is still full of surprises, but the patch project has basically transformed it. I should be releasing it for playtesting shortly if anyone wants to dust off their copy of Test of Time and give it a whirl.

First draft of my book is at two chapters to go.

I have (I think) completed representing CFC well in an internet wide Forum Mafia tournament. I competed at a decent level, and also put the CFC Mafia community back "on the map" as a good place for visitors to play a game now and then.

Those two things have consumed a large portion of my time over the past couple months.
So, uh, what is competitive Mafia? How does it become a 'competition'?

I’ll have to check it out. I was always more of a fan of MGE though! There are more things TOT can do but I always thought it ran sluggish and had a nuisance interface.

I want my... I want my... I want my MGE.

Money for nothin’!

So, uh, what is competitive Mafia? How does it become a 'competition'?

Mafia (as played on this very forum) is a game in which (at most basic level) two teams compete. The larger team (the town) must identify and eliminate the smaller team which has infiltrated them (the wolves). Teams alternate kills, with the town (and wolves) voting for the 'day kill' and the wolves choosing the night kills. With the townspeople not knowing who the wolves are the wolves can use their votes to influence the day kills onto innocent townspeople, but must take care not to reveal themselves in the process.

It is a game of conversation and deception as the townspeople attempt to identify the wolves among them.

The annual tournament is hosted at a site called Mafia Universe, with (this year) representatives from 165 Mafia playing communities across the internet.

You should try it...great fun.

I used to feel the same way about ToT but you can change the city screen to look like classic MGE. Also, several of the nice touches MGE had (like attack animations or flashing units when they were selected) that ToT did away with for unknown reason have been restored by the Test of Time Patch Project. So, now the game plays much much more like MGE than ever before.

It's just a nice version of this game in that anyone can create a detailed scenario without the need for a 10 person team. Lua makes a lot of things completely different.

Here are a few videos I've done to showcase the patch project a bit:

- discusses Tootall and Knighttime's Napoleon scenario and all the cool new features they've coded in

- discusses a Midway scenario I need to finish up

I also have a ton of videos about Prof. Garfield and my scenario, Over the Reich that really showcases what Lua can do. Here's one talking about the strategic bombing mechanism:

Anyway, stop by at the scenario league forums and check out what we're all up to... Civ2 has been a most agreeable pandemic hobby.

I've been working on woodworking stuff since Covid hit. Built some canning shelves for the garden we started this year. Going to have to build more of those lol.

Lab manager just told me to become familiar with theory and handling of a lot of our instruments; IC, ICP-OES, XRD, XRF, Carbon analyzer, turbidimeter ++

And that seems to be on top of everything else I do.

So now you know what I'll be working on.

I tried to look up what a salacot was, and all I got were pictures of hats that look like the kind of thing the British wore in late 19th century India. I'm guessing what you're building is probably not a hat at all.
.

 I've been thinking about this. I think this confusion comes from the Philippines' multiple languages. Besides English, there are four major ones. Tagalog/Filipino is spoken in the heavily-populated north. Here in the central Philippines, Visayan is spoken. Mindanao has its own language, as do the Negros islands. Isolated areas also have their own languages. Here, school kids are taught: Tagalog/Filipino, English, and Visayan.

"Salocat" is most likely a Visayan word for "hut," although CavLancer and I use it for our wall-less patios. So: floor, posts, roof.
