Seriously though there are only 2 english speaking countries in the American contenents if I remember correctly(I suppose there are 3 if you count Greenlands 12 people), the US and Canada and I don't think the canadians get confused over US citizens being called Americans. and I imagine the spanish speaking counrties have another word.

Don't Spanish-speakers have another word enirely? Like estudiodense or something like that, and they don't use americano to refer to americans but to the entire supercontinent? There's nothing wrong with that, I just think that the English terminology should remain the same.

In the portuguese-speaking Brazil there is this term, "estadounidense". But it is only used by hardcore leftist/anti-americans. 99.99% of the population call people from the USA "americans".

All the Latin Americans I have ever worked with refered to native born USians as Americans or Americanos. That's good enough for me.

Estadounidenses, and it's the clunkiest Spanish word I've ever heard. There's a reason we don't call ourselves "United Staters," and it has nothing to do with being arrogant. Quite simply, American is an elegant way of designating people from the United States, and there are few alternate ways of equal simplicity and elegance. (In the 1800s, Columbian was an equally popular term, but that fell out of use when Gran Colombia declared independence from Spain.)

I think the most offensive alternate term I've heard was on Slate Magazine's Board(A cess-pit if ever there was one...there are NO moderators, and no forum rules....so anything goes), where one person refered to Americans as Amerikkkans
