Polish lorry drivers, bus drivers, plumbers, builders, yes.

Or maybe they are just pretending to be Polish?:

I was just referring to that stupid joke that Poles come to Britain to clean your toilets.

You never heard of this joke? Hobbsyoyo likes this racist joke.

People this days cannot understand what "racist" means ..... Racism is discrimination by race, not the job or wealth or social standing ;) (edit : not even a nationality - discrimination by nationality is called nazism) I would rather say that this is a "caste system" joke and it would be more appropriate. Soon the word "racism" will have a new meaning - since people overuse it a lot ;)

Well, Wlk Brytania isn't much ahead of Cypress and Greece.

If I was Polish, and wasn't happy in Poland, where the girls are so pretty, the vodka so strong, and....such, I'd go to Norway, Denmark, and at least 10 other countries before I tried Wlk Brytania, where the girls are not so hot, the beer is warm, and... other things.

Even if you could speak or at least understand English? If everyone spoke English in Norway and London was there too, I bet a lot of Polish people would have gone there instead.

It's England's fault for speaking English, really. It attracts us, they should have known that.

It probably helps, and I'm being quite serious here, that the British are historically pretty good at integrating immigrant populations compared to other European countries. I know there's a stereotype of the Brits as willfully xenophobic provincials, and one that seems to be propagated by the British themselves as much as anyone else, but the truth is that Britain has been accepting and, ultimately, integrating peoples from foreign countries for a century now, and longer if we count the internal migration of Celtic peoples into the Anglic cities, and we've so far managed to avoid killing each other about it in unduly large numbers. Although I'm sure it's a secondary concern compared to the points Warpus lists in explaining why Poles (and others) come here, I'd guess it plays no inconsiderable part in explaining why they choose to stay.

What about Indian people ? India has been a part of the British Empire for centuries and integrated very well. I'd say that not less than 15% inhabitants of the city of London are Indians (maybe I exaggerate a bit) but there are so many of them. I'd say that Brits are far from xenophobic, on the contrary They assimilate :assimilate: very well. (Not to mention that English is the "international language" ;) ) Agreed , that is granted ;) My advice is to make adventage of that GB ;)

It's a lot more than a century. Huguenots spring to mind. ~100,000 came to England in late C17th. Most of them to London. A significant proportion of London's population at the time.

But I hardly think the UK is unique in this respect. Haven't most countries experienced waves of immigrants from time to time? And haven't most integrated them more or less successfully? What choice is there?

Difficulties arise, of course, when there's a significant technological advantage for the immigrants. (Or some kind of disease vector involved.) Then the natives seem to be doomed.

I spent a week in Poland at the start of the month visiting Zamość and Warsaw for a wedding - these are my observations:

The language was impenetrable for me - I would have had trouble making my way back to Warsaw efficiently without having a local to guide me.

There was a lot of Vodka.

I saw some storks.

There was a lot of fish.

I don't like raw herring.

Drivers are lunatics but there are plenty of new roads being built.

There were a lot of mosquitoes.

London is also a "World" city, plus Poland and the UK have a bit of history with eachother.. fought side by side in WW2, Enigma, The battle of Britain, D-day.. I do think that the whole "We speak English" factor is a huge one though, possibly the main reason why so many Poles end up there. Who doesn't learn English in school these days? It's a very "in" language. I think the UK might have also been one of the first countries to open up their borders the way they did.. but I could be wrong about that.

before I tried Wlk Brytania, where the girls are not so hot

The way to solve it is easy - take your Polish girl with you to Britain.

If I was Polish, and wasn't happy in Poland, where the girls are so pretty,

And so Catholic:

Drivers are lunatics

If you think Polish drivers are lunatics, don't even try to meet Russian drivers!

Polish can say all this

strengthening traditional racist stereotypes about us by our so called friendly since 1946 neighbours
with just 5 words? (Media Markt nie die zpaielaoiekaldiao)

What an efficient language!

Why do Poles emigrate to Britain and not to Holland?

Because in racist, xenophobic Holland that pretends to be a modern and tolerant country, they treat foreigners from the east as slaves:

Sorry to say this, but the same racist anti-Polish sentiment can be seen among members from the Netherlands on this forum.

Polish nationals now identify themselves as a different race than whites?
