My very first fortress. In before qoou and Luckymoose telling me my fort design is so bad the first wild echidna to wander along will wipe me out:

Migrants live downstairs in the basement, I wanted my original dwarves to have nicer smoothed rooms. Most crafts are on this level, south of the depot, except for the kitchen downstairs, and the dining hall is finished up (except I need more chairs/tables) down there too.

Problems so far:

No meat industry, though we do (I think) have milk. Metal industry is waiting on my wood furnace to be built, cause I'm not going to dig for magma yet.

No defense, though I have a working drawbridge (I think I have to assign the lever pulling to someone, though I'm not sure how) and a pair of cage traps protecting the migrant dorms. Need more cage traps. Parrots raided my stockpiles, but no meat for my animal traps yet. I have seven or eight farmers and very few skilled workers. Probably going to draft some of the proletariat into my military when I dig out a barracks. It'll probably go to the left of the entrance tunnel.

Can't get anyone to jewel my jewels.

Call me stupid, but I can't see such a drawbridge.

Must say I have a pet peeve for fresh start "united culture empires".

Namely, they want to start as a culture that is already united. What's the fun in that?

Dwarf Fortress is actually appealing to me. I might have to find a version with suitable graphics. I'm admittedly a visual learner, so it not being made up of text symbols certainly helps.

What "graphics pack" are you using, Thlayli? I like it. I don't need fancy, modern graphics. I still play Civ2. :p

By the way, have you people heard of Clockwork Empire? It seems like Anno crossed with Dwarf Fortress, or alternatively, kinda like steampunk Dwarf Fortress with graphics. Very promising, though it's currently due to come out in late 2013.

Heard about it before and it looks very interesting, it and the new Sim City games are high on my list of games that I will be watching for 2013 for the moment. Certainly seem like interesting concepts contained within, hopefully Clockwork Empire will be nice.

Download this. It even installs Dwarf Fortress for you. It also has Dwarf Therapist, which is a more convenient way of micromanaging what tasks your dwarves can and cannot do.

And you have the DF Wiki and #nes open at all times. Following these steps, as I have, makes this basically a playable game for me. :p

Would it be alright if I posted a minor wrap up of some stuff that happened in another game on the thread? Would like to get some opinions on the writing if it's alright.

We have a creative writing thread for that. :)

Thanks for tipping me off for that Iggy, didn't know about it before. Not really a short story but an AAR, and was curious as to where to put it and such.

But thanks again friend. :)

1st Granite

Well Luckymoose still ain't doing anything more than tossing those damn skulls around, so I guess I'm in charge for now. First things first, got to get all this stuff underground and out of this damn weather. Lord Iggy's babbling something about wanting to hunt giant fleas first; Armok-damned noble probably thinks this is some kind of exotic hunting trip.

's sake, turns out the urine rain is real! Crezth and I were already inside mining out a stockpile for our wagons, but everyone else had to come rushing in, covered head to toe in urine. Even Luckymoose stopped playing with his toys for a minute to get underground. Whatever that yellow slime is, it melted right through the ice. Armok help us, all our booze is still out there.

24th Granite

Real rain came along. Everyone went outside to wash the filth off them. Now all of us are both soaked and reek of this yellow slime. At least we got it off us. One of the cats that refused to come inside the first day started stumbling about and bumping into things. It got better after it accidentally fell into our little hole, but I'll be keeping a close watch on it for long-term effects.

Progress on makeshift accomodations is slow but steady. We've got enough space inside now to bring in our wagon, but not much else is done. We need to get farms up soon, or we might end up having to eat that yellow stuff.

1st Felsite

Take a look outside: [that is all yellow slime]

With food stocks running low and no one wanting to go outside, I've had to convince our hunters to reassign as farmers. Lord Iggy refuses, citing his high-class blood. I order Thlayli to toss him out in the slime, and "Lord" Iggy reconsiders. Bloody nobles.

9th Malachite

Some more fools show up in a caravan and decide to join us. They bring no supplies with them, apparently having been told by Luckymoose that this place would be up and running months ago. I get them in from the slime rain and close the hatch back up behind them.

The first couple of them, terrance and loudbot, both claim to be accomplished cooks. Something strikes me odd about the latter fella though: he keeps repeating me whenever I raise my voice at the new migrants. I reluctantly send him to the stills. Poor fella is probably off in the head from that slime outside.

Next is some distinguished bloke, dressed in purple and all, who claims to have been the treasurer to a big-shot baron. Matt008 he calls himself. I tell him Kal can handle counting our whole stock of 3 mugs of wine on his own, point him to a wheelbarrow, and tell him to get to hauling.

Fourth guy though, what a bloke. Stormbringer, former member of the royal guard, with over 200 kills to his name. Rumours say he was involved in a top-secret mining project for years, something about mining candy. No idea how Luckymoose managed to convince this one to tag along, but my he's impressive to look at. A refined mass of muscle, he could slice open a tiger with one movement of the sword.
Sadly we have no ing swords around, so off to the wheelbarrow stockpile he goes too.

2nd Sandstone

More migrants are here. Unfortunately they show up on the wrong side of the river and have to wait in the slime until Crezth builds a bridge around.

First one of them, Birdjaguar, turns out to be some kind of surgeon. I task him with finding out what exactly that yellow slime does. There's a couple of stray puppies around here he can experiment on.

Next two are Daftpanzer and North King. One of them a decent weaponsmith, the other a decent swordsman. Unfortunately we have neither swords nor metal to make them with. They both grab a wheelbarrow and start working on my aqueduct.

Last one to come in calls himself SymphonyD. Says he's a better woodworker than fc and wants to prove it. I tell him to go right ahead; if the crazy bastard wants to wallow around in slime, cutting down trees with a cheap wooden axe, I'm sure fc will be more than happy to stay inside.

16th Timber

A caravan's arrived from the mountainhome. They didn't seem very happy at the sight of the Piss Fields, and I bet they won't be impressed with our trading stock.
One of them has some messages for Luckymoose. No idea what they're about, as Luckymoose locked himself and the envoy in his bonecrafting workshop and has barely come out all day. I wonder how the envoy's stomach is holding up at those bone trophy decorations Luckymoose has strewn everywhere.

In the meanwhile, Kal'Thzar trades a few of terrance's omelettes for the caravan's entire stock. Can't blame the traders, those omelettes are delicious. You almost can't taste the yellow slime in them!

24th Moonstone

This morning I found Luckymoose playing with his bones again. I yelled at him to get working on the aqueduct. loudbot happened to be nearby and he joined in, that weirdo.
Luckymoose mumbled something and broke a bone in my direction. A couple of hours later, I was mining out the future site of the hospital, when a freak cave-in collapsed the entire floor beneath me. Good old terrance found me and carried me to bed. Birdjaguar says I may never be able to walk without a crutch again.

20th Obsidian

i'm so thirsty. none of them will give me booze, they say it's bad for sick people. Luckymoose said so. *cough* damn bone wizard.

OOC:
Holy Stormbringer's a badass. He could take on an entire ambush alone, with the adamantine sword he'd just forged himself. If I don't get around to it, and I probably won't, someone train him in swimming so we don't lose him when the slime makes him slip into a lake.

Looking at legends mode, it turns out Stormbringer has been constantly fighting a minotaur called Actiondungs the Bloated Mucus (with a rather impressive kill list) for the last 5 years. He just recently lost a tooth and an eye to Actiondungs. We've got an Ahab on our hands! Hopefully Actiondungs won't show up until we have steel going.

qoou died of dehydration on the second-to-last day of my turn. We need a new miner :/. Good thing the next migrant wave will be huge.
The above-ground aqueduct is meant to mist up the main entrance so dwarves don't go crazy trying to clean the slime off them. The other, incomplete, pump system is meant to handle the well water, as well as a second mister at the hospital entrance. Do note that the water wheel is suspended; if it's built, the pump will immediately start working.
Opposite from the hospital was supposed to be the barracks, but I never got around to it.

There's a drawbridge hidden under all the slime. That ought to be raised until we need it again for migrants.

The labors are currently a bit messed up, partly due to the shortage of labor, and partly due to the aqueduct project.

Should all be fine when the next migrant wave gets here, and hopefully an elven caravan too (terrance's cooking skill is high enough that a couple of omelettes can buy out an entire caravan).
Speaking of eggs, we're drowning in turkeys.

Last problem I remember: there's a stone blocking the site of the mechanics workshop, and no amount of haulers have been able to remove it for a few months now. We kind of really need some mechanisms too, so we can turn off my projects in case they start killing everyone (I put some hatches up for that).

And here's the save Lucky. Have fun.

Moderator Action: Gold Stars all around!!! No reported posts. Thanks everyone.

Mainly directed to Erez, Terrence and Optical.
Due to the end of the year coming up, which means feasts and responsibilities and preparing for these things (For instance here we have Sinterklaas on the 5th December (semi original Santa) which means I have to make a suprise (DIY gift wrapping with a theme) and 4 poems) and several deadlines for essays ranging between 2000-2500 words and a test, I won't be able to be really active in the NESes. I'l get my orders in and all but I'm afraid it's the most I am able to do.

Not a problem! I'll likely be pretty busy myself. I wasn't expecting to get further than update one before New Year's as is, although two is certainly a possibility if not a probability.
