Simple question, inspired partially by the vegetarianism thread, and partially by the pets thread.

I personally do not eat dogs and cats because I see them as 'pets' more than 'animals'.

But what it is about them that makes it seem much less acceptable to eat them to you (assuming you find it much less acceptable to eat them...)? Is it more right to eat a cow or pig than a dog or cat because we feel more of an attachment to the latter pair?

To extend this further, would you have an aversion to eating dolphin, for example, and why?

Due to my cultural upbringing and my off-and-on personal association with felines and canines, they score too high on my kawaiimeter to be comestibles.

As you said, I perceive cats and dogs as much more human than cows or pigs. It'd be like eating a close relative: I certainly could not eat an Ape, to close to us... and in my mind, socially, cats and dogs are closer than apes. they're family.

They don't sell Cat or Dog at my local store. No chance to try it.

Well.. no I think dogs mainly are pets.. and there are many other choices I see no need in eating dogs.. (or cats)

Eating carnivores is very inefficient. You need to raise other animals just to feed your livestock.

I wouldn't have a problem eating either if given the chance.

I know of no store selling their meet.

As Carnivores it it less efficient to rely on them for meat, as energy is lost in an additional level in the food chain. There is also a higher chance of them picking up diseases.

I don't eat a lot of meet anyway.

I find it interesting that there isn't as much of an aversion to eating cats, dogs and dolphins as I had anticipated. Is this due to a lack of emotional attachment to these animals, or the belief that such an emotional attachment is not a valid reason not to eat them?

As a longtime pet owner, I would be very averse to trying cat or dog in the foreseeable future.

I see cats as sacred animals, so I'm against eating them.

I don't like dogs, but I sure as hell don't wanna kill dogs for their meat, so I'm against eating dogs too.

Anyone who eats cats and/or dogs deserve no mercy whatsoever. No exceptions.

I would never eat a dog or a cat, it would be just as bad as cannibalism in my opinion. Dogs and cats have evolved with humans over thousands of years, not to mention there freaking precious.

I have unwittingly eaten both dogs and cats and I disliked the taste (which is how I found out)

Why can't you have an attachment to cows or pigs? Happens on farms all the time (exc. factory farms) and they rarely have qualms eating them
