Why Don't You Eat Cats and Dogs?

Would you eat a dead human?

No I would never do such a thing! In my opinion animals and humans are entirely separate. I believe humans have souls that go somewhere when they die, and that the dead should be respected. But this is an entirely different discussion!

I anticipate someone asking, "But what if the person considers his cow, chicken, or fish to be family/friend?"

In that case, I would say the hypothetical person either belongs to a religion that forbids the eating of these animals, or else that person really needs to get out more and meet some humans! ;)

Why is it that having a cow, chicken or fish as a pet is less acceptable than having a cat or dog (assuming that is what you're saying, indicated by the last phrase)?

Why shouldn't a dead family member (who happens to be a dog) be respected?

I don't eat cats or dogs because I can't be assed.

I'm too busy fighting dogs.

Like my bro michael vick used to say, "if they don't taste that good, make 'em fight."

If someone's pet dog, or my dog dies, then no I wouldn't want to eat it. Respect should be shown to the bond that the animal had with its owner. I'm just saying that if a dog was raised to be eaten, or if I visited Korea or something then I'd be willing to try it.

Oh, I ate dog meat a month ago while I was on a business travel in northern China. I have no problem eating any thing as long as it tastes good (bare human)

I have eaten dogs a few times and it is very good meat, so there is no reason to abstain from it if that was the reason. Haven't eaten cats before, but I wouldn't mind trying, not that I would purposely seek it out, but if it was served to me, I would eat it. I am not generally sentimental towards food served to me, but I try to reduce beef because of thr impact it has on the enviroment, I would propably never eat whales, because I like whales and they contain mercury!

This is how I feel. One does not eat one's family/friends. Or other peoples' family/friends.

Well, obviously, a cat/dog being slaughtered to eat wouldn't be one's family or friends, or a pet, for that matter.

Also, you sure can. My mom ate her pet chicken.

Simple question, inspired partially by the vegetarianism thread, and partially by the pets thread.

I personally do not eat dogs and cats because I see them as 'pets' more than 'animals'.

But what it is about them that makes it seem much less acceptable to eat them to you (assuming you find it much less acceptable to eat them...)? Is it more right to eat a cow or pig than a dog or cat because we feel more of an attachment to the latter pair?

To extend this further, would you have an aversion to eating dolphin, for example, and why?

The argument I was trying to make is that it isn't really more wrong. Kind of gross, but not immoral.

It's simply cultural: We (Westerners) are not used to think of lots of animals as food.

While in other places in the world people will eat cats and dogs (which we consider pets) or scorpions, spiders and bugs (which we consider disgusting), and in yet other places they will find it abhorrent that we eat pigs (Muslims) and cows (Hindus).

In Scandinavia we eat reindeer, which I've heard some Americans find shocking: "You're eating Rudolph!". :p

Oh, and of course: Whale meat is awesome! :D

As for me, I haven't eaten dogs since I didn't have enough time last time I went to Korea. Would like to try though.

Don't think they serve cats there however. Most Koreans would find the idea of eating cats quite terrible (cats are pets!), but eating dog is more normal. Though eating dog isn't exactly fashionable, and is mostly eaten by old men. Most young Koreans have never eaten dog.

Dolphins is a bit different, since they're quite threatened by extinction. If you can point me out a dolphin specie that isn't threatened, I would probably want to eat a bit. After all, I do eat whales.

I think it would be pretty hard for me to eat a being I was emotionally attached to, whether that being would be a sheep, a dog, a cow or a whale. I prefer to eat "anonymous" animals. :p

No exceptions? Fascinating.

I have considered this, since I am allergic to both dogs and cats. However, I'm actually much more allergic to horse and cow (their fur makes me unable to breath), and horse and cow meat is absolutely delicious! So I'll take my chances, and probably I'm not allergic to the dog meat itself. :)
Reindeer tastes like venison right?

I would never eat dolphin, whale, any primate, or elephant.
Why do you hate farmers? Most small farmers give their animals names and are their friends and treat them like family, and many eat their cow when it dies :)

:yumyum: see?

I personally think it's because of just are upbrining in which Cow, pig and chicken are the things people eat and to eat many other animals is just strange, I for one would eat almost anything as long as it looks good. Animals I have eaten include- Cow, pig, Chicken, lamb, many fish, cat (At least thats what I think that unidentified meat in lo mein is ;)), Kangaroo (Similar to beef), Aligator, Squid.

Eating cats and dogs isn't a asian phenomenon.
There is a prejudice in the german switzerland, that the italians are eating cats. And i saw an old italian man in a documantery praising the taste of kittens...hard to believe. And if you bought a 'rabbit' from gypsies, there was a high probability that you've got a cat. I got told that a skinned cat, without head and tail, looks just like a rabbit. Still, cats are called sometimes 'Dachhas' - roof rabbit. But more in a sarcastic way.
Dogs has been eaten in Switzerland and southern Germany until WW II, my grandmother told me that there was a man in her village butchering dogs. But you had to lay the meat into a river for 1 or 2 weeks to get rid of the hidious taste.
There are reasons why we don't eat dogs, but it's not about being a pet or poverty...
Still, i'd like to eat dog, cat or horse meat someday, but surely not on a daily basis.

Economic viability, and I hear that the meat's stringy and tangy, i.e. no good at all.

Anyone who eats cats and/or dogs deserve no mercy whatsoever. No exceptions.
So, uh, are you going to kill all the indigenous tribes of the Cordillera Central mountain range anytime soon?

I anticipate someone asking, "But what if the person considers his cow, chicken, or fish to be family/friend?"

I most certainly will eat a sea kitten.

I would never eat dolphin, whale, any primate, or elephant.
I haven't tried the others yet, but whale is absolutely awesome. That is, if it is well prepared. A badly cooked whale steak tastes like fish oil! But if it is properly prepared, it is awesome. Both as a steak and raw for sushi. :)

Reindeer tastes like venison right?
Pretty much. It's not as dry as elk, and much closer to calf or deer I would say. But it's been quite some years since i had good reindeer meat.

But to ask about something that used to be more common in the West: Have any of you eaten horse? I'm betting at least your grandparents or great grandparents did, so it's not that alien a thought.

Dogs smell and cats run too fast.

i've read that dog meat is very tough and that people who eat it tend to throw it up since it's tough to digest
