I've noticed that the stuff I download from this forum is in Winzip format; I always post zipped files. However, I didn't realise how much more Winace reduced overall file size. Just to give you an example, when I posted the Native America mod, it just managed to come under 100MB by a few KB after being zipped, barely making the forum file upload limit. However, I've just used Winace on the mod, and it reduced it to 85MB!! This is obviously a huge reduction; either the download time would have been reduced by 15% or I could have fit in an extra 3 civs with 3D animated, single-era leaderheads.

I'm considering uploading all my future files using Winace due to these savings, particularly the larger mods. However, I'm concerned that people don't have Winace and probably can't be bothered to root out a demo off the internet. What do people think?

Indeed most people do not have win ace. I myself winrar, which can take care of ace files. But most people use zip.

Take ace.

People should download 3mb of program rather you consume time uploading 25 'useless' mb.

As far I'm concerned, you could compress them in anything you want except these weird japonese format. ;)

I've tested WinRAR as well - although it can handle other formats, it hasn't compressed quite as well as WinAce; heres what they compress about 160MB to (in my tests):

WinZip......100MB
WinRAR....86.5MB
WinAce.......85MB

Thanks for the comments :D - I'll be using WinAce for the next mod.

I always knew Winzip was the worst, but it is so stinking common. So I zip everything with Winzip and unzip everything with WinRar. :)
