"You probably think I'm a monster"

Prosecutors said he and others in his unit plotted an attack on an Iraqi family. Green herded the parents and younger sister of 14-year-old Abeer al-Janabi into another room of a house while two accomplices raped her. He then gunned down her parents and her 6-year-old sister, before joining in the rape and killing the teenager.

RRW, there are absolutely zero mitigating circumstances here. Deployment stress is not an excuse and all soldiers know it when they sign up to be soldiers. Under UCMJ, capital punishment would be warranted. At best, he should be in military prison for life.

If the soldier was sent on a mission in a mentally incompentent state, then that's a whole another accusation, for his chain of command to face.

Nobody knows how they'll react till they get it.

Quote overheard from on the bus today,

"If that poor girl's family took care of Saddam Hussein earlier then we wouldn't have had to send in the Marines and have that poor kid's(meaning, the US solider who did this) life ruined".

Ignorance is bliss...

Not for the victims of George Bush. this type of ignorance is why Bush got elected twice

Which doesn't invalidate any oaths they've made. Sorry, FP, 'all rules go out with the first bullet' is not the American way.

If there's a problem with the soldier not getting good training before being fielded, then again, the chain of command is partly at fault and there needs to be a larger investigation. But we don't have every other enemy contact resulting in kidnapping, rape, and murder, so I can't find any mitigating factors in the case, personally.

Whilst I am opposed to the death penalty on the principle that the state should not be aloowed the power to kill people, he does derserve to have his brians smashe din for what he did.

I say prosecute the soldier to the fullest extent of the law.

I agree with this. Its these incidents which cause more problems for all the perfectly normal soldiers when they go out in the field. Tragic Incident.

It's pretty clear that he's blaming everyone but himself for what he did. He gains no sympathy from me and deserves the harshest punishment possible.

But as some people here love to say, blame the system not the agent...

... or does that only apply to bankers? My bad

The idea that people should be shot at dawn before anyone has actually given the case serious consideration is the problem.

He's already been found guilty.

Firing sqauads are for honorable military exections (spies and the like), this guy should be hung. In front of his battalion.

No remorse either, screw him.

But you have to waste a perfectly good piece of rope to hang the bastard.

Not that he's been in the military as such, but that he'd been traumatised.
So was the girl and her family. They all got the death penalty. There are no mitigating circumstances in this. It's not like he even has Sabretooth's bloodlust and animal nature to hide behind. He's filth, he is a monster, and he deserves to suffer.

Jesus Christ.

I've heard similar stuff from Muslims in this country about the girls gang-raped by the Skaf brothers. They deserved it because they were wearing skimpy clothing, and how dare the Australian government and courts punish them when they should be punishing the girls and their parents for enticing these poor boys. This was from a woman whose son is now dating one of the victims. And people wonder why I'm for tighter - or rather, improved - immigration laws, despite the fact I'm not personally racist.

I like to think I'd not react to seeing a friend killed by insurgents by raping an innocent young girl and murdering her and her family to cover up my disgusting crime.

Quite. How the coward ever served in the army is beyond me.
Some people join the military specifically to do this sort of thing. They're undoubtedly a minority, but rape and pillage are still popular pastimes.

My personal views are simple. This piece of filth deserves to die, in as slow and painful a manner as possible. My personal suggestion is a red-hot poker up his anus, like Edward II.

I am personally against the death penalty, although not on moral grounds. Morally speaking, there are many people that deserve to be shot in the back of the head and left to fester. My only reason for being against the death penalty is the fact that it will undoubtedly lead to the death of innocents. In fact, the last man ever sentenced to death in Australia was later proven innocent.

If it weren't for that little glitch, I'd be all for it, so I'm certainly not against killing this scum. I just wish the law was less humane than it currently is in this case, and that his death could be prolonged and painful.

From CNN

Now we've had several threads before detailing crimes, and whether they deserve the death penalty, this is an interesting one.

Do you think he deserves to die for this? There are both mitigating and unmitigating corcumstances here

No. He should be kept out of the society for the rest of his life.

Hey look - I dont think there are mitigating circumstances, I would be in favour of the death penalty for some rapes in civilian live here in Ireland, I just thought some here might take thats tance, but happily it seems like pretty much everyone would be glad to see him fry.

I would plead that that's an isolated case; probably isolated around Lakemba.
