Your First Time

What about a tissue box? That seems harmless. Or sheets of paper? Or twist ties?

Sheets of paper are surprisingly strong when stacked. See magazine and rolled thrusting point.

THIS THREAD IS HIGHLY OFFENSIVE TO WOMEN AND SKWINK'S POLITICAL ALIGNMENT SHOULD FEEL BAD

Can't you stuff toilet paper and crumpled up tissue boxes in someone's mouth and strangle them?

Tear tissue box into pieces and shove down throat. If throat returns pieces, crumple them and return to throat. Repeat until wad reaches windpipe.

Nope, not entirely safe.

Cars were not design to kill people.
Guns were. So effective a design that while trying to run down a couple of people with a car might be quite difficult, shooting ten people point blank in a couple of seconds is easy with a gun.
So you're applying abstract concepts such as original design and intent to objects rather than approaching the object for what it is; an inanimate object. That's human nature we all possess I suppose, though I still don't understand some things. It's hard for me to put myself in the shoes of someone who is afraid of or hates guns. I suspect the difference between you and me is mostly cultural and upbringing in regards to guns. I don't think we diverge much in regards to cars.

The technological optimist/pessimist divide strikes again. And if we are only talking about that angle, it's not about culture or upbringing.

First was an M-16. I was actually a fairly good shot with small bore rifles before my eyesight finished going to crap.

I was 8, it felt really awesome because I was, like, shooting holes through tin cans.

That reminds me- I need to start using my slingshot again. It can sometimes put a rock through both sides of a soda can filled with water.

Ruger Mini 14 (5.56 mm semi-auto carbine). Sweet little gun, lots of fun for the first timer as you can score a nice tight group and feel encouraged by your success.

30-03 bolt action rifle (don't remember the model). Kick surprised me and was hard to control (I was 14 at the time), but that's what made it fun.

12 gauge pump action shotty (a Remington, I think) loaded with deer slugs. Same as the 30-03, but I preferred the rifle. Not sure why.

Overall, a fun time was had by all.

Moscow, 1982. I was in a firefight with a KGB agent and a bear. The 7.62mm RPD I had been given seemed cold and heavy in my hands, but I refused to hesitate and with the first shot killed them both and saved the President's life. It was a Tuesday.

Yeah, this. Other than being painfully surprised by the recoil I didn't really feel anything special about it.

After reading threads like this and hearing a lot of reactions like this, I was actually surprised by just how little recoil there was. But I was using a .22 rifle (I think). I'd like to give a go at something with a little more kick.
It was earlier this year. I was about two months into my conscription as a National Service Police Officer and that day was the first live firing round lesson. I was mostly uneasy at the thought of having a loaded Tarous Revolver strapped to my hip. Something of death and danger was at my hands.

The sounding bell went off and for the first (very long) three seconds, nobody completely pulled the trigger to fire the bullet. Meanwhile, out of hearing nothing, I clenched my index finger, pulled the trigger back and fired the bullet, letting the recoil bounce off.

I immediately felt horrible. It felt wrong to have that much power and that much lethality in my hand or in anyone's hands. It sickened me to know that they were forcing me to fire a gun.
I can see how you might feel that way, but shooting to learn how to shoot people is a different game from shooting for recreation or for hunting or for recreational hunting.

On a side note, given your frequent criticism of your country's government, I'm surprised you joined the police force. Or is conscription mandatory there?

Conscription is mandatory for all Singaporites.

Guns are nice and all, but ammunition is just too expensive.

How hard is it to refill your own ammunition ?
I could easily go through hundreds of rounds in a short time, I guess its not much fun refilling thousands of rounds just to go through them all within an hour.

It probably is. And I don't actually have a gun.

Now, arrows are expensive, too- mine are $6 apiece- and I've gradually and accidentally broken quite a few arrows on metal or wood (and even with other arrows!)- but so long as you don't screw up like that, you can just reuse them.

It probably gets funner when you spend almost a week's pay to supply the exact same hour with commercial ammo. But it depends on the gun. I invariably preferred my AKs and SKSs for large-bore shooting because the ammo is dirt cheap when bought in bulk.
