2018 U.S election

Yea I haven't seen a truly introspective conservative on here yet, if they were truly so they would have stopped backing this party when McConnell played politics with budgets during the worst market down turn in 80 years. Its completely about power, but that robocall is something new. Its definitely the start of something new in my lifetime.

The robocalls that Karl Rove used against McCain in the GOP primaries in 2000 were just as clearly evil, and weren't anywhere near as insulated* from the candidate as this one. Campaigning is a dirty business, and the GOP has never hesitated to embrace that.

*meaning that they are always paid for by some 'action committee' that isn't directly part of the campaign, but some are more deniable than others.

I shall be glad when this election is over. I suppose next will be firing the Attorney General and of course Democrats will start visiting Iowa and New Hampshire.

I've been seeing Jennifer Granholm on CNN so much I thought she might already be running. Oops, she's Canadian.

They were also more effective. That call is just self-parody - very few people are actually going to take it seriously, it uses blatantly racist language that is unpopular even among southern Republicans, and it insults white women as well as blacks.

Race-baiting by accusing the opponent of siring an illegitimate black child, on the other hand...that works.

Trump open lies are a refreshing change, It really is the party of stupid
I wonder how long they are willing to take it good and hard for Trump

We have entered an era where what we think is self parody has actually been proven to work on a certain segment of the population. Have you not seen the president lately?

I'm not so sure anymore.

Yes, but do we have the time for that? We have this climate change, and dictatorships such as Turkey, Russia, China, Saudi Arabia, Venezuela who want to bring down this democracy thing, and a host of other problems that probably won't wait kindly while we wait for nutjobs to thin out enough that they can be outvoted even with possibly even more skewed electoral alchemy.

Democracies have been very good at bringing themselves down, basically by letting voters know that there is no alternative. And then all the taking heads act surprised when the voters had enough and elect some "populist" into office.

So what are the current forecasts for this one? Or do pollsters fear getting it wrong and and not advancing numbers?

I predict that a bunch of politicians will get voted into office.

Nate Silver has a 6/7 change of the Democrats taking the House, and 5/6 chance that the Republicans keep the Senate.

As the final round of polls roll in, the only thing that seems clear is that there will be no wave this year, blue or red. The Democrats will likely win the House, but not with a big margin of votes. The Republicans will likely hold control of the Senate, but not increase the margin of votes.

In one political market, the options were DS/DH, DS/RH, RS/DH, RS/RH, Other. Other has 20%.

It seems clear that Republicans will significantly underperform the Senate map they were given. Looks like significantly wide Democratic victories in Trump states such as Ohio and Pennsylvania.

And Wisconsin/Michigan. The republicans could have had a supermajority in the senate but might end up with a super tight majority

One of the founding fathers (I don't remember which) said that there had not yet been a democracy that hadn't committed suicide. However, that's no reason to sneer on democracy. Especially when those in power conspire to retain it.

Control of both houses is a bad thing. I suppose control of the Senate will be more damaging in the long term, because of the judiciary appointments, but the House has more power over budgets so their having hamstrung the 2021-25 presidency with ridiculous tax cuts can also be highly destructive.

Well ironically that sentiment is precisely what underlies the "There is no alternative" idea that inno was talking about. The idea being that if voters are given what they want (as opposed to what the "experts" and technocrats tell them they should want) ruin inevitably results.
