2020 US Election (Part One)

What are the merits of minor third party voting? Does it feel fulfilling or just silly? Boosting a third party at least sends a message to the Republicans and Democrats, but the one I have in mind is a bit too low-profile for that.

In local elections, especially the weird ones the US has for judges and DAs and so on, it might have some impact.

However, the system is designed to ensure that above that lowish level any vote outside the Republican-Democrat dichotomy is a wasted vote.

That's one of the reasons Trump won.

It would be closer to correct if you said the third party was the reason Trump almost lost.

Gary Johnson polled 3 million more votes than Jill Stein--4.48 million to 1.46 million. In 2012 those two polled 1.28 million and 469 thousand. A month before the election it appeared Johnson had a chance to poll well over 10 million votes. Trump won by pulling the majority those votes back.

Outside of a few marginal cases, I think it's mostly message-sending. (And not generally very effective message-sending, because it mostly occurs in uncompetitive elections, and only really serves to tell the major parties what you would vote for if you didn't have to vote them.) The way the American system is set up, primaries seem to be where actual shifts in policy are produced.

That's one of the reasons Trump won.
In almost every state, the Libertarian Party won considerably more votes than the Green Party, so if there were only two parties on the ballot, it's likely that Trump would have come out ahead in the key states. In Pennsylvania, for instance, if Clinton had taken the 50k Green votes, she would have edged ahead of Trump- but if Trump had similarly won the 165k Libertarian and Constitution votes, he would have tripled his original lead. I don't think there's grounds for assuming greater exchange of votes between Democrats and Greens than between Republicans and Libertarians.

If there are only two parties on the ballot, Trump probably wins the popular vote. It depends on how the write-in votes fall out.

This will give a ton of detail (and sell you even more).

And people want to upvote my posts for comedy…

I feel like it's unfair to be so unreasonable that we can't even parody you

Define "you." Me? Trump?

If you mean Trump, I agree. Early in his administration, I started writing a parody of him, But he began outpacing me in outrageousness. :crazyeye:
The problem with parodying Trump is that he's very good at getting things done while you aren't looking. Example, in what other administration is Betsy DeVos not a major problem? In Trump's domain, she's a blip.

This will backfire on you in such a way the nation cannot even begin to count up the errors of this tactic. His daily lies do cover up all the damage he is doing. Its an amazing shitshow that is so utterly disgraceful as to lead the country one helluva step towards civil war. All for a few judges and a tax cut eh? That's all it took for you to just completely disregard half your fellow citizens as sheep that need to be beaten and culled? There's no listening, there is no respect given, never is there a mending or bridge building. Just endless lies and division. For what? an extra grand in your pocket and some voter restrictions? Now when the dem socialists finally wake up the working class how do you think this will go for your side? The side thats used race baiting and lies to deceive them? My only theory is you all think you can keep it going forever. You seem to be the one true believer here, even so much so as to excuse his endless lying, so tell me when this finally turns to the other side, why should anyone ever listen to anything someone like you has to say?
