2020 US Election (Part One)

It was a stretch for the WaPo to make an obituary for him and call him an austere conservative religious scholar.

The WaPo is the mouthpiece of certain groups within the US that backed jihadis in the area, in the past... back when the jihadis were useful for destroying Syria and looked like they could do it.
Would be good to know whether this is a mop-up operation, or some documents liking the guy and those who have been protecting him to those certain groups will emerge and be published.

Conservatives oppose organizations that denigrate women, whether it's WaPo's beloved ISIS, an organization created for the purpose of raping girls, the Mexican cartels that get flesh across the border, or even sports leagues that let men dominate and grab titles meant for women athletes.
“Conservative” is traditionalist to reactionary. Conservative Christians want to control women, restricting their rights, prevent them from expressing themselves, restrict their access to reproductive health, and many other oppressive things. I am not “Conservative” in any of my political positions even if I hold myself to conservative standards. I honestly didn't understand your last statement until others pointed out you were misgendering trans women. IMO, the men’s olympics should be opened up to all genders (so women can prove they can compete with men) and the women’s olympics should be restricted to allow only cis women. However, I don’t really care about the olympics anymore, since Sochi proved how corrupt the organization is and Rio proved how uncaring towards health and wellbeing the organization is.

By Tristan's logic conservatives also support organizations that denigrate women and children, like ICE and their detention centers that were created for raping women and children, and, uh, the Church.

Yea same. I voted for Bernie last go around too. I’d vote for him again if it looks like Warren is losing pace to him. I want whichever of the two can get out of the primary. I voted for Hilary last time holding my nose because I figured at least she knows how to manage stupid dumpster fires. I guess I’d do so again for the sake of the nation’s foreign policy. (Yes I understand that she is a bit of a war monger but let’s be not equate her with John Bolton and is rather he US have an air of competence rather than this hot mess). Basically I have to always vote against the GOP as it has become a party for permanent destruction of everything good in the world so some of their friends can make some money.
It's really unfortunate that our system only gives us two choices and voting for anyone third party or abstaining is effectively the same as giving your vote to the side you're most opposed to.
Who cares. There's a bunch of colors and AgeOfassClown has the popular conception of one.
I find this renaming of AOC is one of the most ugly things you've written. She's got what, two years in politics and has a platform of trying to help people. Sure, you can disagree with her strategy but she's not out there lobbying to put kids in cages or kick people off welfare and for that, you give her that name? Disgusting.
(edit: xpost!) The thing is that the one-drop rule is not that common in the rest of the Western world™ so to outsiders the thought of somebody being a) tainted by blackness and b) considered black because eight generations ago there was a black runaway slave ancestor is hard to even think of, i.e. as they say in The Princess Bride, inconceivable.
I've read in Brazil that the 'one drop' theory is reversed from the US - if you have any white ancestors, you are considered white.
Trump didn't have political baggage? When? He'd espoused ‘socially liberal’ causes for decades until he found out it was better business to embrace his own inner instincts and publicly support the birtherist conspiracy theory that is code for ‘no Negroes in the White House’.
I think now it's pretty clear he didn't really believe in any of those liberal values/causes to begin with - he just wanted to fit in and be liked by the NY liberal elites even as he discriminated heavily against people of color in business practices.

They may have caught Baghdadi
I read that he was killed. I also read that Trump called Putin to give him the good news before he informed anyone in Congress. I guess he had to check in with his boss.

That's, uh, an unorthodox meaning.

The olympics have been like that for a very long time. And usually those organized in the US have been among the worst :)

Inherit a Greek custom, inherit....

:mischief:

Well, yes, but even that is ‘political baggage’.

Why isn't everyone celebrating like when Obama killed OBL?
How can you be happy about the death of another human being ??
"Ding dong the witch is dead!" Does that ring a bell?

I didn't celebrate OBL's death, it was a revenge killing and I felt it violated both international law and the standards the US should set for itself. I'm pretty indifferent to the death of Al-Baghdadi, as I understand things his death is not going to cripple ISIS or anything like that and we already know that a policy of assassination has not really helped us to win the War on Terror (it also didn't help win the War on Drugs).

Oh, those aren't legit arguments. Those are the "stupid arguments." "Why isn't everyone celebrating like when Obama killed OBL?" was supposed to have a false premise

I know but I wanted to talk about it a bit.
Since this is the 2020 election thread do people think the Baghdadi operation will help Trump? I'm skeptical that it will make much of any difference.

Oh, I see, I see. Quite.

My punditry is: nope, this doesn't really matter politically. As much as Trump wants us to care about Baghdadi more than OBL, the dude didn't do 9/11 and no one cares anywhere near as much as they did when it was OBL. Plus we've had 8 more years of Middle Eastern war fatigue, so you can add that to the apathy. Also, Obama's I-killed-bin-Laden 6 point approval rating spike came entirely from Republicans and independents. Killing the guy responsible for 9/11 is the kind of thing that'll make 12% of Republicans happy with Obama for a few weeks. Killing Baghdadi is not the kind of thing that'll make any Democrats suddenly happy with Trump.

I don't think it will even show up as a bump in his numbers and his 36% is already locked in come hell or high water. So no this will not help him at all. They way he spoke about the raid only reinforces to most people how much of a boorish moron this president is as well.

We kill terrorist leaders regularly; this won't help him. In fact, it highlighted how reckless his withdrawal was as there is now reporting that the operation was rushed through when military commanders realized they were going to lose access to areas and intelligence assets they used to track him down with the withdrawal. Military leaders have leaked to the press that the operation was rushed and took risks they didn't want to take but were forced into by the withdrawal.

That speech/press conference was super weird and funny (if you have a similar sense of humor as me).

"Our K9, as they call it, I call it a dog. A beautiful dog, a talented dog, was injured and brought back... Great dog."
~"No one's better at using the internet than [ISIS], except maybe Donald Trump... and that's why he died like a coward" (perhaps Trump was jealous that Baghdadi was better at Twitter than him? Take the oil, take the followers. My ratio is national security.)

He talked about himself in third person at a press conference?

And he doesn't even use email!

Yeah, he said that in the third person. He was saying funny or weird ass things at a rate of three or four times a minute. I started watching it to check if it was as "gleefully violent" or whatever as some of the press was making it sound. It was so morbidly funny, I got sucked in and watched the whole thing. It was weird even for Trump

That really was a weird rambling morbid speech. Even for Trump. Maybe part of why people aren't excited is because he grossed them out a bit.
