I was recently treated to a song called ‘redneck girl’. The fact that such a thing can get traction and become a sellable cultural icon should speak volumes.

I haven't heard the song, or know the artist, but given the sort of trash and absolute drivel that gets traction among some choice examples from ALL the music genres, what specific "volumes," should this song speak, really?
Redneck girl was a hit in 1982! There is nothing out of sorts with the song at all. Even today, it is just a song about going to bars and hoping to meet somebody who likes you.

"Redneck Girl"

Redneck girl likes to cruise in daddy's pickup truck,
And a redneck girl plays hard when she's down on her luck,
Living for Friday afternoon,
She's gonna show one ol' boy that weekend moon.

And I pray that someday I will find me a redneck girl
A redneck girl likes to stay out all night long
She makes sweet rock and roll while she listens to the country songs
She's waiting for that moment of surrender
her hands are callused but her heart is tender

And i pray that someday I will find me a redneck girl
Gimme a, gimme a, gimme a redneck girl
Gimme a, gimme a, gimme a redneck girl

Gimme a gimme a gimme a redneck girl
Gimme a gimme a gimme a redneck girl

Redneck girl got her name on the back of her belt
She's got a kiss on her lips for her man and no one else
The Coyote is howling out on the prairie
First comes love, then comes marriage!

And I pray that someday I will find me a redneck girl
Gimme a, gimme a, gimme a redneck girl

Gimme a, gimme a, gimme a redneck girl
You've got to gimme a, gimme a, gimme a redneck girl,
Gimme a gimme a gimme a redneck girl.

I think whoever perceives that they are winning the contest is less enthusiastic to have debates as they feel they have more to lose. That is also presumably why Trump was asking for a ridiculous 6 debates (who would want to watch that many)! Also until the last couple of weeks the Dems probably thought their policy of keeping Biden for the most part out of the limelight was working. There haven't been any Biden gaffs lately unlike in the primaries. I bet Trump's team wish they could do this with Trump who almost daily is doing or saying something dumb (weaponized soup, encouraging election fraud in North Carolina, the war dead are losers, etc. - I know some of these happened a while back now but only just made the news).

I see in the betting Trump has almost drawn level with Biden (even though he is still behind in almost all battleground states). Also 90% of Trump supporters believe he will win compared to just 80% of Biden supporters who think Biden will win. I think after 2016 no one trusts the polls. There is some positive news for Biden though, the pollsters have at least tried to fix the issues from 2016. For example they are now weighting according to education, as that it was key issue with errors in 2016. In case anyone was unaware less educated people were much more likely to vote for Trump and more educated more likely to vote for Clinton (not meaning to disparage any Trump supporters here, well maybe just a little). Also there were a lot more undecided voters at this point in 2016 compared to 2020, and a lot of them ultimately broke for Trump. This time those undecided voters according to polls if push comes to shove are more likely to vote for Biden.

I am actually surprised that many of either Trump or Biden supporters are confident that their candidate will win. At the start of this year I thought it would be perhaps too close to call, and I still mostly think this. There are so many variables still, particularly with the chaos that will be voting this year. Could be a long election night too, with Trump likely to at least initially be ahead, and with states being called much later than normal.

I want Biden to win, for specific reasons (I do think, of course, that he is better than Trump). But he still makes gaffes, and in a debate he would be a very serious liability, cause it won't be against Bernie who always was gentlemanly and a friend to Biden.
Whether it is just stuttering, or more related to cognitive decline, Biden isn't someone who can survive a hostile debater, even if their level is that of overclown Trump.

There is nothing Trump can do to alienate his own base; they will swallow whatever dogsqueeze he lays

Well, there is one way. Showing basic human decency would get most of his base to drop him in five seconds.

It's almost like there's this thing people sometimes do, when they get made fun of for their good parts by jackasses, where they decide "whatever, **** you, we're doing us."

Can't say things are usually improved in the general, but it's one of the more reasonable reactions.

I think Bird's right tho, song is legit. Haven't heard it in an age. Did somebody hip hop up a remix so you can "sing it with your pants around your ankles" or some culture-war-y implication-thing I can wink in?

Oh man, I remember a poster that just hated this one:

Spoiler poke poke, gentle(hopefully) mockery :

Oh, they don't go over well with a lot the right sort of person where I'm from anyways. But usually those guys weren't going over well with the right sort of person before they put the stickers on. It's why they put the stickers on. But we've covered that in a whole ****ton of permutations, right?

Feeling more "God's Country" by Blake anyhow(upper Midwest badtimes culture goes West more than South). Needs to frikkin rain.

I don't think so. I think that his folks are loyal enough that he could actually lead by example... which in my mind makes his conduct so much worse... he doesn't need to be that way. He's just cynically choosing to be that way because he has no faith in the character of the people he represents.

His conduct isn't just insulting to his opponents... Its insulting to his supporters.

Yes we have, but it isn't any less true then than it is now. And as far as the "right sort of person" thing goes... meh, let's not get ahead of ourselves here with the circle jerking. South Carolina only banned it 5 years ago and Mississippi just dropped the flag as their state emblem 2 months ago, so the difference between "right sort of person" and whoever else is still alot more like overlapping circles than any bright clear line.

I just put down grass seed because I was sick of looking at bare dirt on the side of my house but planting sod seemed too risky (and expensive) given the amount of shade. We've had a ton of rain the past week and I've been watering the crap out of it and the seeds have started to fill in the bare spots nicely. Of course then we had a windstorm that brought down a tree that I had to get removed, and the heavy equipment to cut and remove the tree tore up my new grass... so now I've got to plant new seed.

Well, if they're at college with a shiny new bigass pickup, then no, the flag doesn't have much excuse for me. But I'm from where I'm from(not the South), and most of the coastish d-bags I talk to(regional city dwellers sometimes get tossed in there, the burbs have this weird terrifying conformity to the better heeled ones that sort of partially transcends locale), don't really care what other people look like. They're mainstream American and mainstream American is really loud. Most of the guys that have that sort of thing, here, are very young and very invested in their crappy ass trucks. Then they realize how screwed they are trying to get work and stuff when that's visible, so they... what's the word, mode switch or something? Who knows. It's northern Illinois outside the place everyone cares about. So it's part German south Wisconsin, part Scandinavian Minnesota, part creeping South, a big part Great Plains, and probably at least half Chicago. With all the immigrant pockets that come with it that I'm just rolling into American whether they're Mennonites, Lebanese, Black, of Hispanic. Though most of them have been here long enough they aren't really immigrant pockets. East Asians/Pakistanis/Indians/Saudis/Iranians more frequently are legit immigrant immigrants. Kind of neat after all the bad blood with the heavily drafted population of the parents' generation to see Vietnamese culture coming online in more friendly, mainstream, terms.

Hope your grass bounces back fast. I think there's probably time for it to get started before the freezes.

I guess I'm a little more pessimistic. Many of those people's first loyalty is to what is, substantively, white nationalism. Trump is merely the hero; the cause is bigger than him.

On a, like, basic level if Trump didn't call the troops suckers and losers, they'd still follow him, but if he exhibited decency in the sense of like, restarting federal civil rights investigations and generally not being super-racist, I do believe they'd drop him like a flaming potato

Only if his base is billionaires and large corporations.

I don't know. I think he pissed a lot of them off, too, with his trade wars and attempts to curb outsourcing. Plus, remember, George Soros, Warren Buffet, Bill Gates, Oprah Winfrey, and a number of other Liberal and Progressive activists, are also billionaires who run big corporations. And Hillary Clinton sits on the board of directors of Wal-Mart and has a lot of friends on Wall Street. As evil, vile, and despicable as the plutocratic oligarchy is, and as much they demean and run down the vast majority, they're evil is not a partisan issue as far as U.S. political parties go - as both major American parties feed from their trophs, lick their boots, and sell-out to them over their constituents. Let's not pretend otherwise.

Mediums, Lights, or Reds BTW? I'm pretty sure I can elimminate Ultras, because... well... you're not a pansy... and I think Greens and Light Greens are out... cause you're not Black
They just made menthols illegal here in California and one of the leading opposition groups was a group of black churches.

Every time I think they're big enough *******s already.

Different lyrics. Apparently it's another song by the same title.

Still, my question stands. How is this particular song this getting traction so "telling," of modern culture, compared to a lot of vile filth that's been recorded among almost every major genre of contemporary music? Where is the standout quality that is so telling?
