Weren't people saying that she was already a druggie before she became well-known? I suppose she technically started her career in show business before that, but whenever people talk about pressure and strain in show business they seem to regard those as part of the demands that fame place on people. I'm sure struggling artists face pressures and strains, as much as any other member of the working class, but I wouldn't be surprised if some of the same people who are sympathetic to Amy Winehouse's troubles wouldn't say the same thing about working class people who turn to drugs and alcoholism.
I don't know about her personal history with substance abuse, so I'm not sure when that started. I do agree that everyone faces stress or strain of some sort or another. I'd think it was just as tragic if another 27-year-old with a lot of talent and potential died so young. Even a 27-year-old with no talent at all! I'm sympathetic to her troubles not because she's famous or a celebrity, but because she's human, like me. I don't know her particular struggles intimately, but I've had my own struggles (who hasn't?) and I've lost some friends in their 20s to drug and alcohol abuse, and it's always such a damned waste. That's part of why I think it's tragic for her - all that potential, lost, gone.
