People love us and make give us larger living quarters. They build two round barrell like things (that look like old automotive cigarette lighters) on the front porches the palace. These things are hidden by the bushes on the walkway, so they do not stand out. They also fancy-up the front door. Some of our populace have spent too much time watching 'Curb Appeal'.

We have a settler ready to plop down a city on the northwest shore, just above the last of Sumeria.

Around the capital we have stacks of Cannon, Artillery and Cavalry. And one Army waiting to be filled.
Most of our Armies are on the Incan/Greek border protecting our weaker Incan brothers from the lure of Ivory.

The turns did not take very long, but if you decide to cycle through the cities, well, be ready. That task will take some time.

Do we need that galley and caravel? I know they are rent-free but they are not the Bismarck and Tirpitz.

I did not pay a lot of attention to deals; no one seemed to have any cash.

Hartig is way off course as a settler factory. That is my fault. I ignored it until too late. Now the city is size 1 (but growing like a weed).

We have one more turn left of our Golden Age.

Jungles Clearing
I've set all the slaves to clearing out the jungles. We have 102 of these. There are four stacks of 24 slaves each. Each stack can clear one tile of jungle in one turn, once they are on a jungle tile. We have not roaded the jungles, so each stack is working alone. It clears a tile on Turn 1; moves to an adjacent tile on Turn 2 and clears that tile on Turn 3. So the work is a bit slow.

I see that somewhere my math is off. Four stacks of 24 adds up to 92 slaves, so 10 should be available for other tasks in the jungle (roading and irrigating, mostly). However, I only have six slaves left over. I don't know where the other four are at.

Marsh Clearing
I've got two stacks of native German workers in the marshes. It takes 8WT to drain the marsh, two to irrigate and two more to road. Unlike the slaves, these stacks are set up make a road on their turn, so they can move more freely.

Farming
In the far north in former Celt land and also for most of Old Ottoman and Sumerian lands, these cities are too corrupt to make anything worthwhile, except specialists. So where there were once mines I have begun to replace them with irrigated farmland. And in many of these places, we have Civil Engineers in place to help us construct our cultural buildings. Even in a hopelessly corrupt city producing only one useable shield per turn, these hardhats help a great deal. A 100 turn university becomes only 34 turns when one of these is used. Hardhats do not help make units, only buildings. So once we get all the culture buildings we want, these need to be switched to taxmen for cash or geeks for smarts.

I've also begun to use workers poorly. The brave and strong and smart German workers can now build roads in 2 turns and irrigate a tile in 2 turns. It just seems easier to move one worker onto a grass or plains tile to irrigate/road than worry with them in stacks of two and then trying to get into stacks of three to rail a tile in one turn.

Now for jungle and marsh work or roading other terrain, it makes sense to pay more attention to stacks. I just can't get that enthused about stacks of two for some reason.

Wonders
We are the only one building Theory of Evolution and it has about 10 or 12 turns to go. Once our Golden Ages ends we can plan how to match that build with our research. I would like to use this edifice to grab Atomic Theory and that tech that follows it (brain-freeze) since they are two most expensive techs in this age.

Civ Assist and MapStat Info
Per Civ Assist II, at our current pace, we will have a Cultural Victory in 1977 AD, down from 2076 AD just ten turns ago.

Per MapStat:
Total Culture of 18965, 2nd of 12; 1st) Greece, 24384.
Culture per turn of +551, 2nd to nobody!

Per Civ Assist II, based on this save:
Republic, 90% science, 10% tax, 0% luxuires, non-Golden Age: -147 gpt.
Feudalism (same numbers): -10 gpt (which does not seem right).

I don't know of any game help that tells you how many of each improvement have been built ('Your Empire has 1 palace, three libraries, 16 barracks,...'). The only way to know is to visit each city on a royal tour.
lurker's comment: A small addition to Buce's comment: If you go to the Economy tab of CA2, the right-hand column lists what improvements are already built in each city. For example, a city that says, "BG----" has a barracks and granary. You can click on the top of that tab and it will sort cities by what improvements they have. I think it sorts them alphabetically, so everything with a barracks comes first. That will help you count raxes, but is less helpful in counting other improvements.

Unless we get another player or two, I guess I'm up.

However, I'm not going to get to it for a few days, so if *anyone* else wants to take a set, feel free.

Game Impressions to 1300 AD

I just wanted to take a pause and evaluate where we are in the game. We're down to three active players at the moment and I thought it might be a good idea to examine what we've done and what we hope to do.

Good
  • We have expanded further and faster than I expected.
  • Have a stable and secure empire.
  • Removed four civs (Arab, Ottoman, Sumerian and Celts).
  • Everyone has had some pointy-stick time.
  • Captured a lot of cities and built even more; we have nearly 200 cities.
  • Learned a lot of German composer names. :D (A whole lot more names than I first thought!)
  • We have the strongest cultural growth per turn and it is a stable growth (compared to culture per turn via MapStat which varies from turn to turn).
  • With no warfare, mainly just worker moves, my turns took from 30 to 40 minutes each.
  • We are at Turn 250 of a maximum 540 turn game.
  • If we build nothing else, we can claim a Cultural Victory in 1977. But we can do better than that.
  • The end is in sight.

Bad
  • The map size is huge and the landmass is pangea. Sorta fun earlier, but getting to be a bit of a drag now, since we have the largest empire.
  • We do have a lot of cities to manage, almost 200.
  • And we are trying for a cultural victory, which requires a building buildings that are usually ignored (temple, cathedral and those colo- thingees that I can't spell) .
  • Warfare turns take a long time per turn.
  • Cycling through the cities for MM takes about an hour.
  • We have 217 turns to reach 1977. :(

Future German Plans
As I recall, we have two remaining in-game tasks to do before we can sorta coast to a cultural victory.

One, get a source of Ivory for ourselves, which means a war, hopefully short, with Greece in the near future. We have a German source for the other luxuries, but not one for Ivory. As large as we are, trading for Ivory will get very expensive. So we choose to take it from Greece and make it German.

Two, once we get more of our culture buildings built, we have planned to revolt to Republic since it has better cash flow to pay for building upkeep. We need to decide when to do this. After the Ivory war for sure. But what are we looking at as indicators that we are ready? 200 cities? A library in each city? Library and university?
But if we can afford the upkeep in Feudalism (which we don't know yet), do we need to switch?

Other Victory Methods for the AI
Our size and strength will prevent Domination and Conquest Victories.
We need to build the UN to prevent a Diplomatic Victory.
Kyoto (Japan) has 4600+ culture points and I don't know if that is good or bad at this point in the game. Kyoto is the most cultured city on the planet and could claim the 20K City Victory.
The game won't last long enough for a Historgraphic Victory.
Someone might try to get to Alpha Centauri, but our military might and/or diplomatic skill will prevent that.

If Kyoto gets above 10000 culture points, we can easily invade Japan and raze the city.

As for the space race, I don't think we have to worry - with our tech lead and size advantage, we can comfortably thrash anyone who even gets close to Space Flight.

In the Local Economy section of CA, the last column is 'Buildings', and it summarizes all the buildings you have in each town (e.g. RW is BGTML----CU--- -, it contains a Barracks, Granary, Temple, Marketplace, Library, Cathedral, and University). At the bottom of this section, there's a dropdown box allowing you to select specific buildings - choose Cathedral, then click on the Buildings column to re-sort, and you can quickly see that we have exactly three Cathedrals in our empire.

Only 5 turns? Did you want to go the full 10?

I had intended to do the full ten, but they were time-consuming enough that I gave up after 5.
5 turns it is.

Since we are down to three players, I would like to open the game to any lurkers that might want to take a set of turns.

I'd like to give the lurkers a chance to play before opening the game to everyone. Turnsets are 5 or 10 turns, your choice.

Roster
Elephantium - just played
TheOverseer714 - UP!
CommandobBob - getting ready

I have downloaded the save, so this is my "got it" post. I assume we are going to war against the Greeks this turn-set, so I will probably only do five turns. Even so, it may take me several days. IA turns take forever, especially a huge map with tons of cities. Any goals besides the war, give me a shout soon.

Besides the war for Ivory and trimming back the Greeks along the way I can't think of anything special.

I think what we want to do is to raze whatever Greek city is by the Ivory and replace it with one of our own. And then perhaps fight back towards the west, razing and replacing cities as we go.

Before we declare war, check and see if Greece has any ROP with our neighbors. If they do, try to get an MA with that neighbor vs. Greece. I don't really want a phony 20-turn war with Greece but that is better than letting the Greeks get some cities for cheap via an ROP we didn't see.

And don't worry about the time. Do what you can when you can.

I've opened the game up for more players and posted in the Succession Game Registry thread.

Overseer, you're still up. I won't let anyone steal your turns. :D

It's taking time, I've done 2 turns so far. Someone said we have plenty of troops, no need to build more. I wish we had a bunch more, I hate having to stop and guard the gains with Armies. They should be attacking, but they aren't because we don't have enough Infantry to guard our border towns. We have a huge border and its frightfully poorly defended. Expect to see many units being built soon.

lurker's comment: I downloaded your save yesterday and had a look. I noticed you're building a lot of unis where temples could have been done already. Although unis give more cpt than temples, you could be getting those temples up and generating some cpt while waiting for the unis next.

Maybe this has already been discussed somewhere in the thread and I missed it, but I found it curious. :)

We were able to get anyone to join in on Military Alliances vs. Greece? That was my hope for protecting our borders; dogpile on Alexander and force him onto the defensive.

Did you want to post a save so we could look at it?

I think that was my doing; more of a reflex thing than anything else.

Even though this is a culture focused game, it still just seems so wrong to build a temple. I'll need to overcome that on my next set.

I believe building universities first was in cities with decent gold production to get a boost in science and a boost in culture production. The higher culture per turn, the sooner we finish.

I have finished 5 turns, and I believe that's all I will do, it takes sooo long to move so many units and log the turns. Here is the turn-log:

Hand-off notes: I played a little offensive defense on the last turn to keep from losing cities to India, I attacked where they could slip a cavalry in and take a few undefended cities. I think we'll be okay with judicious artillery usage at defending against India, but we will need more units to hurt them enough for a peace treaty while finishing off the Greeks. I did get a couple of alliances, but ironically, they are against India. We are now at war against Greece, India, Aztecs and Japan, so I think we're gonna get to use Panzers after all:drool: I think we will need more factories in our core to produce units, so we can get our enemies taken care of. At this point, I recommend razing any city unless it has a useful wonder, flipping counts toward WW.
