The whining continues. This is a fair and democratic poll. Whatever is chosen, everyone should abide by.

It's really not that hard a concept. :)

The thing is, the original post of this thread didn't make it clear what the poll was actually for. I suspect many voters thought the idea was to pick the Civ 4 icon out of a line up.

We should have another poll when number 2 wins to see if people can guess out of the 3 CIV icons which one represents civ 5. If it's not close to unanimous, you have to accept that it's not functional.

Well, everyone who votes in polls would probably have voted in this one, and would know which is which. So you would have to show someone who hasn't been on the forum and see if they can tell.

These polls have been going on for weeks. Ignorance is no excuse.

If people preferred Civ 5 they'd vote for it.

Just another thing for people who are anxious for ciV to come out to complain about I guess.

I eventually decided on Civ5...not really because I dislike the other, but because it really is actually more practical.

We can't elect a new icon with only 21% of the votes! What do you think will happen if 79% of the people are against the new icon?! Anarchy - That's what!

If we look at trends as of April 3, here is what we have:

Potentially ambiguous (see current Civ 4 icon in title) variations on the theme of "CIV" have 33 to 38% of votes depending on which ones you include here. With one clear leader having 21% of the votes.

Civ5 theme (one entry) has 18% of the votes.

CivV themes have 24% of the votes, split among 6 main versions, three with 5% to 6%.

(It could well be that the CivV and Civ5 voters would each prefer the other 4 character icon to the potentially ambiguous CIV icons. If that is the case, then a 4 character icon may have 42% support)

Variations of the solo V have 17% of the votes, with a clear leader having 11%

I think that clustered along these themes, the current voting is far from decisive. I suggest that if voting ends up like this, then a runoff (edit) among the one winner in each cagtegory of Civ, CivV, Civ5, and V would make sense. If one gets > 50% we are done, if not, drop the lowest vote getter and repeat until we have a >50% winner.

It is not like we have some close deadline that we have to decide ahead of ... :mischief:

The floor is open for seconds to my motion ...

I don't think it is that simple, and it is complicated by the fact that many of the CIV versions can be considered flawed, in being hard to distinguish from the Civ 4 icon. At least in my opinion, and that of some other posters here.

"If people dislike the CIV themes, they'd vote against it" is the flip side of your statement, and over 60% have ... but that vote has been spread over dozens of alternatives.

For example, in the runoff I propose, I would support the solo V, if that didn't last, then the CivV, and failing that, Civ5. A CIV theme that looks like the Civ 4 icon would be my last choice.

Hmmm, I thought we were electing the one with the most votes. That shouldn't cause anarchy.

    Its a vote people.

Don't know if this has been mentioned, but one of the icons has no votes

I'm seconding Da Vinci's motion, there are far too many choices in this poll for it to be final. It's never easy to claim a plurality as a sufficient mandate, it's impossible when that plurality is 21% I'd recomend another poll with a handfull of choices, rather than a boatload, from which it can be narrowed down to two final choices.

This isn't about which icon is winning, it's about having a poll which clearly shows the favorite of the members. If the current leader continues to win, so be it, I'll be happy with it as long as it gains 50% of the vote.

I disagree. This was the format that was agreed upon. If Civ 5 was truly more popular than the various iterations of ciV then more of them would have made it to the finals.

I don't see any point in telling the administrators and mods how to do their jobs.

By the way, for the record, I don't "abhor" the CIV style icons in the poll. I just think for various reasons they're the worst ones to go with. If one of those icons did win, it wouldn't bother me because I never use the icons anyway. Actually, that's a lie - I have used the BtS icon in starting threads in PBEM games but that is to distinguish it from Warlords and Vanilla within a Civ4 PBEM forum. I'd have no such need for a Civ5 icon until perhaps an expansion pack is released, where I'd likely use the new icon for that.

I can't actually think of any time I need an icon to distinguish between Civ5 and Civ4 because I'd know what forum I'm in already.

Speaking objectively, I agree it's not completely "fair" to declare a winner when it has less than 50% vote, especially significantly less than 50%. That's not how democracy works. But it could be considered too tedious to follow the fairest process where you eliminate the least preferred candidate one by one and redistribute votes based on preferences.

I would still hazard a guess that the majority of voters in this poll aren't actually going to be disappointed in any significant way if one of their least preferred icons wins.

    My 2 cents.

I disagree with this analysis - I think the more important thing for an icon (i.e. a non-verbal little picture thingy) is differentiability. So we have:

    • Characters in yellow and white on a black background (18 entries in the final)
    • Characters in other colours on black (1)
    • Other colour schemes (3)
So there are only 4 reasonable choices in my mind, since all in the first group look pretty much the same as the Civ 4 icon if you squint at it, or are shortsighted, or dyslexic, or not an english speaker. There were lots more gooduns in the earlier rounds mind you ;)

I'm not sure the one by one elimination is a smart idea, I'm sure this can be completed in two rounds of voting or less.

And again, Thormodr, this isn't about who's winning, if Civ5 manages to pass CiV at the end of this poll, it will still have the VAST majority of players voting against it, and I would want another round of voting. Notice on the first page, before results became obvious, I said the same thing I'm saying now, that there are too many options for this to be the final poll. There's no reason to rush a decision on this, Civ 5 is still months and months away. Additional rounds of voting will take a few weeks at max.

I second da vinci's motion, exactly as he/she proposes it.

The one by one elimination would be at most 3 rounds. da vinci is proposing starting with 4 - the top vote-getter of the four different types. And we could have a winner in the first round if one goes over 50% and be done. But if not, it goes to 3 where there also could very possibly be a winner, but if not then to 2 where there'd have to be a winner.

We may end up with the same winner we get out of this current poll, who knows, but we may not. For all we know it could be the one in fourth place now. But the advantage is that whether it ended up being the current first place or fourth place one or either in between, no one could say it wasn't deserving if it got 50% since all the major "types" would be in contention, and as has been pointed out, it's a long time to Civ5 and there's no hurry, and more rounds sound like more fun to me.

I'm pretty amazed that my entry made it it this round at all.

I did vote for it though, so it has a vote now. But really I prefer #13 (big V behind civ).

And I really dislike all variations on ciV, where the same v stands for both the end of civ and five.

Isn't CIV already used for Civilization IV? Since IV will continue to be played for years to come, won't this result in endless confusion? Since Civilization 5 will probably be the last in the series, shouldn't it be more distintive?

Exactly, I only voted on Civ5 because it has a chance of surpassing ciV.
