What's going on with the Covid situation in Alaska? Both Alaska and Oklahoma have similar vaccination rates and almost no government restrictions in effect as far as I'm aware, but the case trajectories are totally different. Does it have to do with Alaska moving towards winter or something?

Until now Alaska hasn't had that many cases or deaths, so it doesn't have much natural immunity. And of course there is just some luck of the draw. But yeah Winter, with everybody inside doesn't help.

Oklahoma probably isn't testing as much

NC hospital system fires 175 workers

THE WASHINGTON POST

A North Carolina-based hospital system announced Monday that roughly 175 unvaccinated employees were fired for failing to comply with the organization’s mandatory coronavirus vaccination policy, the latest in a series of health care dismissals over coronavirus immunization.

Novant Health said last week that 375 unvaccinated workers across 15 hospitals and 800 clinics had been suspended for not getting immunized. Unvaccinated employees were given five days to comply.

Novant Health spokeswoman Megan Rivers tweeted Monday that almost 200 of the suspended workers, including those who had submitted approved exemptions, received their first dose by Friday. The hospital confirmed that the rest of the suspended employees who did not comply were fired, although the exact number of those dismissed was not specified.

“We stand by our decision to make the vaccine mandatory as we have a responsibility to protect our patients, visitors and team members, regardless of where they are in our health system,” Novant Health said in a statement. “We couldn’t be prouder of our team members who made the choice to receive the COVID-19 vaccine and remain part of our team at Novant Health.”

More than 99% of the system’s roughly 35,000 employees have followed the mandatory vaccination program, Rivers said.

The mass termination of unvaccinated hospital system employees is among the largest of its kind to date. More than 150 health care workers who did not comply with a vaccine mandate at Houston Methodist, one of the first health systems to require the coronavirus shots, were fired or resigned in June after a federal judge upheld the policy. ChristianaCare, a Delaware health system, announced this week that 150 employees were fired for not adhering to its vaccine mandate.

Novant Health did not immediately respond to a request for comment early Tuesday.

United Airlines is firing 600 employees because they are refusing to get vaccinated.

United Airlines to dismiss 593 workers who refused vaccines - Japan Today

It solves two problems at once... makes their airline safer and gets rid of 600 idiots.

That makes them my US airline of choice, especially since it probably means drunken anti-vaxxers will no longer fly with them... win, win.

Brazil hospital chain accused of hiding Covid deaths and giving unproven drugs
Group of whistleblowing doctors gave 10,000-page dossier to investigators last month with allegations against Prevent Senior

One of Brazil’s biggest healthcare providers has been accused of covering up coronavirus deaths, pressuring doctors to prescribe ineffective treatments, and testing unproven drugs on elderly patients as part of ideologically charged efforts to help the Brazilian government resist a Covid lockdown.

Prevent Senior, a health maintenance organization with a chain of hospitals and more than half a million members, is in the crosshairs of a congressional inquiry into Brazil’s coronavirus crisis and the highly controversial response of President Jair Bolsonaro.

Spoiler :
Last month a group of whistleblowing doctors handed a 10,000-page dossier to investigators containing a series of incendiary allegations against the São Paulo-based firm that caters to senior citizens.

The dossier contained claims that elderly patients had been used as “human guinea pigs” for the testing of unproven Covid “remedies” without giving their full consent.

On Tuesday, the lawyer representing those whistleblowers, Bruna Morato, appeared before the Covid investigation in Brasília and made further allegations.

They included claims that:
  • Prevent Senior doctors were pressured into giving patients a cocktail of ineffective drugs, including the antimalarial hydroxychloroquine and the anti-parasitic ivermectin, in what was referred to as the “Covid kit”.
  • The decision to promote hydroxychloroquine as a supposedly effective Covid treatment was partly designed to help government ideologues who allegedly wanted to use such information to convince Brazilians there was no need to stay at home during the pandemic. “The economy couldn’t stop so they [the government] needed to find a way of giving hope to people who were leaving their homes. This hope had a name: hydroxychloroquine,” Morato alleged.
  • The use of such unproven medicines was also part of “a cost-reduction strategy” on the part of Prevent Senior. “It is much cheaper for a health provider to make certain medication available rather than actually admitting those patients,” Morato claimed.
  • Coronavirus deaths had been concealed in order not to compromise the results of Prevent Senior tests allegedly designed to show “Covid kit” drugs were effective against the disease. “This is fraud,” said the inquiry’s vice-president, Randolfe Rodrigues.
  • Prevent Senior doctors had supposedly received instructions to reduce the oxygen supply to seriously ill Covid patients who had been in intensive care for more than 10 or 14 days. “The expression I heard repeated on numerous occasions was: ‘Deaths free up beds too,’” Morto said.
In a statement Prevent Senior said it repudiated the “untruthful accusations” and had always operated within legal and ethical guidelines. The company denied it had ever hidden or under-reported deaths.

“Prevent Senior has always respected the autonomy of its doctors and has never fired its employees because of their technical convictions,” the company said.

The claims sparked a major outcry in Brazil, where nearly 600,000 people have died because of Covid – second only to the US.

Daniel Dourado, a public health expert and lawyer from the University of São Paulo, said: “This is an unprecedented scandal in Brazil.”

Dourado said much about the allegations against Prevent Senior still needed to be elucidated. A police investigation was needed. But there were disturbing signs that Prevent Senior may have formed an “alliance” with some government officials and informal advisers “to create a narrative that was used to trick the Brazilian population into becoming infected” with Covid. “These accusations are extremely serious,” Dourado said.

Chrystina Barros, a member of the Covid-19 taskforce at Rio de Janeiro’s Federal University, agreed that the accusations, if confirmed, were grave.

“If it happened as is claimed, it is like telling patients … that they were not being treated by the doctors in front of them. [That actually] those doctors were following a script laid out by an administrative office that was motivated either by cost reduction … or political purposes,” Barros said.

“It will be up to investigators to define the extent of this [but] it is very serious.”

Do svidanya, Rossiya. :wavey:

I have affinity for Russia and its people, but not the propaganda wings of its government.

Here in Spain, with almost the 80% completely vaccinated coronavirus is beginning to be a secondary thing. Add the La Palma volcano, high electricity prices, and the usual political culebrón, and yesterday there were not COVID news in TV for first time since 2019.

Still at 59% here, though that’s not bad considering the mass vaccination drives only began a few months ago. I got my shots three or four months after all of my America-based family did.

Credit where credit is due in having the rollout, while with many bumps, as rapid as it has been and I hope it continues. Let’s get to 100%! 万歳!

Here it has reached a plateau since some weeks ago, and the number of people partially vaccinated is reaching zero. The reason is that remaining 20% is anti-vaccine people, or little kids whose parents don't want to vaccine them.

The “freedom” argument is bogus to begin with because they’re still demanding public subsidy for their excesses.

My idea was to, if a vaccine cannot be made mandatory, temporarily privatize all functions of the government and then impose a mandate. Wanna drive? Well, Amadeus Road Corporation (est. 2021) needs a copy of your valid vaccination certificate.

I “promise” to return “all” vital government functions “including” Fort Knox and its bullion. You have my word. :yup:

UK is at 66.8% fully vaccinated.

There is no strong anti-vaccination movement here.

But there is no particular desire to push to vaccinate children who are not at any particular risk.

What they are doing now is stepping up vaccinations against flu etc which took a back seat;
and preparing a third jab, the booster, for those judged very vulnerable.

And there are a lot of people who have had the real Covid and do not feel any urgency to vaccinate.

Makes me wonder about the daily news in Portugal where even 84.9 % is fully vaccinated according to the "OurWorldInData" graph.
Perhaps Inno knows more

15% of your population is under 15, is there even a vaccine approved for them there?
