I read somewhere that like about a week ago was the first day in like 2 years without a murder in el salvador

We're not even lowest in Europe.
But just checking, seems that different sources report different numbers. Wiki reports more than twice the amount of murders for Germany via UN sources than the official German statistics office reports, mmmhh.
Apparently cape town itself has more than 2000 murders/year (section in German wiki), whereas whole of Europe (-Russia) only has 8000.

The official statistics in different countries often have different treatments which makes comparison difficult. A big cause is variance in police recording systems practice.

For homicide differences could include;

  • whether murder includes manslaughter and if so, some or all manslaughter
  • whether attempted murder is include
  • whether self defence/justifiable homicides are included, including police murders
  • whether they count by incident, by offender or by victim
  • cases where murder is suspected by police, or only those where it is actually assessed as such by coroners or medical examiners, or only cases actually proceeded against.
Difficult to know without digging into the exact detail of a source.

Probably typo. An order of magnitude is not that big a mistake, all it takes is to miss one key.

Typo? Because Baltimore 100% does not have a population of 66,000.

According to Wikipedia the city has 620,000 people and the metro area has 2.7 million.

Also, where I live (Norman, OK), the murder rate was 2.5 per 100,000 in 2014. I think I live in a pretty safe community, but that's still three times higher than Germany's murder rate.

Yes, a typo. Thank you for noticing it, I know my words are being read.

Did you see The Economist this week? El Salvador has a murder rate of eighty, this is fifteen times the US rate. Imagine that.

*Takes El Salvador off 'to do' list.*

Guess we just need another plague or another world war to increase equality.

Can't get those playboy sorts to march worth a damn.

I knew St. Louis was bad but I didn't know it was that bad. Were they looking strictly at the city or the metro areas as a whole?

In any case I'm glad to be out of there.

welllll

China is actually a wee bit larger than America, so "united states" and "indonesia" should switch places

there are some thingamajigs that makes those figures wrong. I believe mainly by excluding territories China controls but other countries (mostly India) disputes
