Do you lick your plate?

Well, do you?

I am wondering how many people lick their plate after they have finished?

I do it all the time and mother used say this to me, "Where have I seen that before? Oh wait I have seen the dog do that." Trying to discourage me from doing it, but it never worked. Of course I never did that when I was out eating, just at home.

I do rarely, but only in private.

Especially after pancakes. Nothing as good as pancake crumbs, blueberries, and syrup.

I rarely finish the stuff on my plate.

Makes it kind of hard to lick it.

I can't recall ever licking a plate.

Yup. I do it. In private, and to save a bit of effort on washing up.

According to Solzhenitisyn in One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich, a prisoner licking his (and possibly others') bowl is the beginning of the end.

The truly dignified mop up with a piece of bread.

I haven't licked a plate. I never enjoyed savoury food that much.
Now, if its a bowl of ice cream I will employ the tongue on the sly ;)

Rarely.

I know some older folks from poorer countries who do it often even in America. Understable, though, as those folks tended to come from much more desolate backgrounds.

Assuming "plate" isn't an euphemism I'm not aware of ...

Yes, but rarely. And I always feel so uncivilized about it.

I don't think I've ever seen anyone licking their plate for anything other than (poor) humour value. I thought it was just used because 'they cleaned the platter clean' wouldn't be much of a zingy ending to Jack Sprat.

Its food awesomeness dependent.
