I honestly cannot see what possible harm a handful of foreign words in your sig or user title could possibly cause. It's baffling that mods go after a few non-English words in sigs with such zeal.
 
I'd like to join the chorus of people going along with what Godwynn sez in the OP. God knows I've had a ton of foreign language quotes in my signature, custom user title, and location, and I expect more in the future.
 
It has never been a problem if you've added an English translation with it.
When you don't bother providing a translation you may expect comments and questions.

Oh and BTW Godwynn, I hadn't missed yourAlle Menschen werden Brüder signature, but I know what it means and know Schiller's work. :)

Well what if there is a thread in Site Feedback in which people post translations of their signatures/titles? That way if one has questions about what their signature means, people can look into the thread. If there's a problem, mods could poke people and tell them to post their translation into said thread.

Yeah, I can't see how sigs like Godwyn's jeopardize the character of the site. I support an English Only policy for Posts, but not for what is being discussed here. I agree with the chorus.

The English translation distracts and clutters and basically just ruins the whole thing.
 
Also, many foreign phrases lose a lot in their translation; and a lot of them simply have an appealing and poetic sound, even if you don't know the meaning behind it. For example, there is no real English translation for my sig. Trying to translate it would be utterly futile. But it sounds great even when spoken as an English speaker.
 
People need to learn to Google. Pre-approval is lame and time consuming.

And how time-consuming do you think it would be for a moderator who sees something in a foreign language and then has to go and work out what it says to ensure that it's not saying something that breaks the rules? People have posted extremely offensive stuff in foreign languages as a way of non-obvious flaming.

I sympathise with the OP's concern and I think the idea of a translations thread is a good one. The point I want to make here is that the English-only rule isn't there just to make the forum easier to read without having to look stuff up - it's there to make it easier for us to ensure that people are posting within the rules.
 
Right, so what's to stop me swearing and flaming in Welsh, only to provide a completely benign (but deliberately wrong) English translation?
