Fall From Heaven NES

Yeah, you wouldn't find anything on google. NESing is specific to this forum and afaik doesn't exist anywhere else.

Not exactly true.

But NES forum here seems the most populated and complex, through.

Yeah, Google isn't a great help in this case.

While the NES FAQ here is very decent, I found that the best way to really get a grasp of it is to join one - but that has problems of it's own. First, some mods simply won't allow noobs in. Second, some NES's are quite complex and present you with page after page of numbers and text to burn through; not exactly an easy learning curve.

FFHNES was fantastic on both those points. Jopa, being new himself, was more than willing to accept new guys. FFHNES also has a simple, easy-to-understand system - and, really, can be played without really knowing every nuance. Unfortunately for you, FFHNES isn't accepting any more people (and seems to be in a bit of a hiatus right now; hopefully Jopa can fix that over spring break...). The only other NES's I keep any kind off tabs on are FFHNESII and EkoNES, and both of those are more complicated. Plus, neither one of them is taking new people anyway (and Kol's NES hasn't even started yet, the lazy bugger. ;) ).

I know that's not exactly helpful, but the point is that if you're really interested about getting into NES'ing, you're probably going to have to start with another (non-FFH) NES. You will probably want to do a bit of research, too, to see what's out there and what would be easiest for you to understand. Either way, good luck, mate.

May i suggest Milarqui's Milarnes? Its very simple and the MOD is new again (which can be good and bad but usually means they are a little bit more understanding of new members).
In addition, its still in the early stages so you can get in on things while they are simple and not be thrown in the deep end with nukes and world wars right away.

EDIT: linky

Khazad culture is traditionally clan-based. Dwarves have been shaped from the earth and given life by Kilmorph. The first generation of dwarves didn't age, but almost none remains to this day because of wars, accidents, winter and sometimes melancholia.
However, the memory of the first generation is still alive, as many among them got children, and these children ventured upon and under Erebus in small groups, growing steadily. Some of these groups died, but most prospered until the Khazad met humans of Patria in the age of magic.
Very few dwarven clans remained on the surface world at this time. The Luchuirp clan did, and lost contact with the Khazad of the Underhome for centuries, until the end of the age of winter.
The clans of the Underhome each trace their ancestry back to the first generation. Each clan kept clay tablets where the name of each member was written. Many of these have been lost during the age of winter, when the resources under Erebus became as scarce as above, and as the knowledge to read and write was almost totally lost during the cold times.

Today, all Khazads still belong to their clan, but members of one clan no longer stay grouped together all the time. Most clans are scattered across the Republic, with members in Hallowell, Khazaak and Riylod, although a few of them, like Gar'Meg, remain in a single area.
There is a relatively small number of clans who went out of the Underhome and above the surface:

Clan Thorne is the noblest clan. Thorne is the royal family, and although monarcy has been abolished when dwarves reached the surface, this clan retains a lot of prestige and influence.
Clan Ki is a small clan, almost all of its members living in Khazaak. It is also extremely prestigious, being named after the sculptor of the dwarven race. Ki clan produces the best sculptors of Khazad, and some of the best stonemasons.
Clans Eb'Lis, Gar'Meg and Gar'Rah are located in the southern part of Khazad. Eb'Lis is a relatively obscure clan, while Gar'Meg and Gar'Rah history has been counted elsewhere.
Clans Needle, Willow, Ironroot and Barkin are among the biggest clans. Traditionally, members of these clans lived near the surface and made forays outside during the Age of Magic to bring wood and plants to the Underhome. Thanks to their tradition of living near the surface, they thrived more easily than most other clans and are widespread through the country.
Clan Fir was also a clan of surface foragers but is much smaller, although probably richer. It's mostly known as the Consul's clan, and most of its members live in Khazaak.
Clan Otendain members claim to have the longest lives of all dwarves, because they kept a very precise track of their ancestry and arranged their marriages carefully. They pretend that the intra-clan breeding common among other clans led them to shorten their lifespan. Otendains always tried to find their spouses outside their clan, which was often possible only through kidnappings in the Underhome. Their raids and activities caused a lot of strife in the past, but during the Thornes' reign they were forced to be almost peaceful. Due to their past, Otendains are usually good warriors and scholars, since they were the only ones to retain knowledge of the ancient runes used to keep track of clanic lineages. They are now spread out widely among the country but their numbers are quite low.
Clan Pen'Arin on the other hand is descended from the first dwarves Penna and Arinus, and remained isolated for many generations. As a result, say the Otendains, Pen'Arins are often afflicted with congenital diseases and short lives. Pen'Arin and Otendain don't go along very well, and a wedding between member of tese clans is unheard of.
Clans Karbhen and Riylin are the most numerous clans of all Khazad. The Riylin founded Riylod, and almost a third of the population of that city belongs to this clan.
Clans R'nog, Turnich, Underhammer, Kuderk and Doplin are relatively poor clans spread among the country.
Clan S'nadrin is a very minor clan which is an offshoot of the bigger S'nadli clan who decided to remain in the Underhome.
Clan LowRock is famous for its miners, among a nation of miners. LowRocks are often very devout followers of Kilmorph and many paramanders come from this clan.
Clans R'ni, R'nos and Ryas share a weird history. They all claim to descend from legendary Rnoros of the first generation. Rnoros first married Nia of the third generation, and when she died, he married Nosa of the sixth generation. When she died, he married a new wife, Yasmin of the tenth generation. When she died too, the three clans born of his wives (R'ni, R'nos and Ryas) all asked him the favor to choose a wife among them. Rnoros didn't want to please one clan more than another, so he did something no other dwarf ever did. He forged an axe with a metal that noone had ever seen, and noone knows where he found it. Rnoros then asked his clansmen to cut him in three parts: head, torso and legs, and put each part in an oven for seven days afterwards. At first they were reluctant, but Rnoros insisted. Finally, Ethanus R'nos accepted to kill his forefather and put the parts in separate ovens. After seven days, a copy of Rnoros came out of each of the three ovens, each new Rnoros a perfect copy of his "father", and each of them married a woman of each clan. Unfortunately, the three young Rnoros all aged quickly and died in a human's lifetime. Ethanus disappeared with the wondrous axe an eternity ago, and it is not known what happened to him nor to Rnoros's tool.
The last clans are clans Veren, Adien, Kuchirp and Morr, who left the Underhome reluctantly and are still very attached to the old traditions. They often scorn buildings built above ground and most of them still live in caves.

(OOC: Should you need a new Khazad character, please don't invent a name that doesn't belong to one of these clans).

Good luck; perhaps someone will start a new one. Otherwise, slots always open up from time to time, so pop in the FFHNES, FFHNESII, and Pre-EkoNES threads every now and again.

Now... [coughs]

Jopa? Are you there? It's all spooky without you, and I'm scared. Could you maybe talk just a bit, or give me a hug, or something? Please?

Well, if, perhaps it is, and i hope it isn't, i want to say 'thank-you'.

TheJopa: You set the standard for many to follow that will be (has been) difficult (even impossible) to match (my nes, Eko-nes, even the rule set outlined by Nothen Wolf in the NES ideas discussion forum). I had a really great time and spent lots of time thinking/scheming etc in relation to this game and loved every second of it.

So, although i would love it if you come back, i want you to know that even if you don't, i am thankful and appreciative.

So am I, even though the Calabim are becoming even less significant every single turn. Still, it was a lot of fun, and the rules worked really well for the most part. Like Immaculate said, they were the inspiration for both of our NESes, and I hope we can continue the tradition you have started here.

[sigh]

My poor, poor Lanun. Poised at the brink of true awesomeness, (or awesome-NES, ba-dum-tish!), never to see their glory...

Jopa, I as well wish to thank you, and add my hopes that this NES is only sleeping, not truly gone.

What would be good is if we could get a confirmation one way or the other just so that we know if we can all discuss our diabolical schemes and have a good laugh or not.

Well, it doesn't seem like Jopa's being very talkative...

It saddens me to do this, but I think it's about time to put it up to a vote of the Major Players (loki, Ldi, merc, Immac, Tyrs, Kol, and myself). If we all decide unanimously to end it, then we call it dead... :( If a week goes by, and we still haven't decided and Jopa hasn't posted, then we vote again with a simply majority ruling. Seem fair to everyone?

On my part... I, reluctantly, say this NES looks dead.

I'm not a stalker...
really i am not...

but thejopa IS active on these forums so if he had wanted to visit he could have easily enough.

march 24

in addition, his activity indicates that he was active yesterday, SO... if he's not posting here, i suspect its because he doesn't want to, not because he doesn't have time or isn't able to, SO... i suspect he has lost interest.

Which is fine- thats his perogative and thats why i said 'thank you' a few posts back.

Having said that, i think, theJopa, you should come post, even if its only to share a short epilogue and accept the congratulations that are you due. You worked very hard on this project for a long time and, for me personally, you deserve a round of applause.

:clap::clap::clap::clap::clap::clap::clap::clap:

Yeah, I think this looks about dead too. It was a hell of a game though! I'll call it a success.
So, now we get to brag about our scheming exploits right? I don't have to many to talk about, but I really want to know what some of you all we thinking at times...
EDIT: In a good way! Most of you (immac, kol, orange, specifically) were much, much more clever than me.

the biggest war was the grigori and kuriotates (mostly kuriotates) vs. the hippus, khazad and lanun. I think the hippus started it the the khazad and lanun jumped in.

If this is dead, loki, what was your per turn income? i suspect it was massively huge.

Aww I was lurking this too:( it's sad that it is dying
