Khazad culture is traditionally clan-based. Dwarves have been shaped from the earth and given life by Kilmorph. The first generation of dwarves didn't age, but almost none remains to this day because of wars, accidents, winter and sometimes melancholia.
However, the memory of the first generation is still alive, as many among them got children, and these children ventured upon and under Erebus in small groups, growing steadily. Some of these groups died, but most prospered until the Khazad met humans of Patria in the age of magic.
Very few dwarven clans remained on the surface world at this time. The Luchuirp clan did, and lost contact with the Khazad of the Underhome for centuries, until the end of the age of winter.
The clans of the Underhome each trace their ancestry back to the first generation. Each clan kept clay tablets where the name of each member was written. Many of these have been lost during the age of winter, when the resources under Erebus became as scarce as above, and as the knowledge to read and write was almost totally lost during the cold times.
Today, all Khazads still belong to their clan, but members of one clan no longer stay grouped together all the time. Most clans are scattered across the Republic, with members in Hallowell, Khazaak and Riylod, although a few of them, like Gar'Meg, remain in a single area.
There is a relatively small number of clans who went out of the Underhome and above the surface:
Clan Thorne is the noblest clan. Thorne is the royal family, and although monarcy has been abolished when dwarves reached the surface, this clan retains a lot of prestige and influence.
Clan Ki is a small clan, almost all of its members living in Khazaak. It is also extremely prestigious, being named after the sculptor of the dwarven race. Ki clan produces the best sculptors of Khazad, and some of the best stonemasons.
Clans Eb'Lis, Gar'Meg and Gar'Rah are located in the southern part of Khazad. Eb'Lis is a relatively obscure clan, while Gar'Meg and Gar'Rah history has been counted elsewhere.
Clans Needle, Willow, Ironroot and Barkin are among the biggest clans. Traditionally, members of these clans lived near the surface and made forays outside during the Age of Magic to bring wood and plants to the Underhome. Thanks to their tradition of living near the surface, they thrived more easily than most other clans and are widespread through the country.
Clan Fir was also a clan of surface foragers but is much smaller, although probably richer. It's mostly known as the Consul's clan, and most of its members live in Khazaak.
Clan Otendain members claim to have the longest lives of all dwarves, because they kept a very precise track of their ancestry and arranged their marriages carefully. They pretend that the intra-clan breeding common among other clans led them to shorten their lifespan. Otendains always tried to find their spouses outside their clan, which was often possible only through kidnappings in the Underhome. Their raids and activities caused a lot of strife in the past, but during the Thornes' reign they were forced to be almost peaceful. Due to their past, Otendains are usually good warriors and scholars, since they were the only ones to retain knowledge of the ancient runes used to keep track of clanic lineages. They are now spread out widely among the country but their numbers are quite low.
Clan Pen'Arin on the other hand is descended from the first dwarves Penna and Arinus, and remained isolated for many generations. As a result, say the Otendains, Pen'Arins are often afflicted with congenital diseases and short lives. Pen'Arin and Otendain don't go along very well, and a wedding between member of tese clans is unheard of.
Clans Karbhen and Riylin are the most numerous clans of all Khazad. The Riylin founded Riylod, and almost a third of the population of that city belongs to this clan.
Clans R'nog, Turnich, Underhammer, Kuderk and Doplin are relatively poor clans spread among the country.
Clan S'nadrin is a very minor clan which is an offshoot of the bigger S'nadli clan who decided to remain in the Underhome.
Clan LowRock is famous for its miners, among a nation of miners. LowRocks are often very devout followers of Kilmorph and many paramanders come from this clan.
Clans R'ni, R'nos and Ryas share a weird history. They all claim to descend from legendary Rnoros of the first generation. Rnoros first married Nia of the third generation, and when she died, he married Nosa of the sixth generation. When she died, he married a new wife, Yasmin of the tenth generation. When she died too, the three clans born of his wives (R'ni, R'nos and Ryas) all asked him the favor to choose a wife among them. Rnoros didn't want to please one clan more than another, so he did something no other dwarf ever did. He forged an axe with a metal that noone had ever seen, and noone knows where he found it. Rnoros then asked his clansmen to cut him in three parts: head, torso and legs, and put each part in an oven for seven days afterwards. At first they were reluctant, but Rnoros insisted. Finally, Ethanus R'nos accepted to kill his forefather and put the parts in separate ovens. After seven days, a copy of Rnoros came out of each of the three ovens, each new Rnoros a perfect copy of his "father", and each of them married a woman of each clan. Unfortunately, the three young Rnoros all aged quickly and died in a human's lifetime. Ethanus disappeared with the wondrous axe an eternity ago, and it is not known what happened to him nor to Rnoros's tool.
The last clans are clans Veren, Adien, Kuchirp and Morr, who left the Underhome reluctantly and are still very attached to the old traditions. They often scorn buildings built above ground and most of them still live in caves.
(OOC: Should you need a new Khazad character, please don't invent a name that doesn't belong to one of these clans).
