Fox09 - This Means War!

Great Lighthouse will be a stretch at this stage. As for other denial wonders, what about Zeus. We certainly don't need it (with Globe) but the double WW for the AI might be good.
Good that you mentioned Zeus ... but it is not a "denial" wonder. We don't care if the AI builds it (as you'd said, the Globe protects us). But that's a technicality ;)

I would say Zeus is not that high up .... Always war means it takes quite a lot of fighting to have WW creeping up for the AI. Chances are, when that (the numerous battles) happens, they should be crippled beyond repair anyway.

Why is TGLighthouse a stretch? Do we not already have a lighthouse? Plus it is not entirely useless to us, at least it adds the valuable GM points. It is crucial to deny it to enemy in an archipelago map.

I've only played two AW games in BtS but I feel the WW is actually increased from Warlords. I didn't have Zeus in either so maybe that was it. Also, I believe that fighting in your own cultural borders doesn't count towards WW, so unless we get invaded the Ai won't generate much WW.

Great Lighthouse usually goes early. I would be surprised (pleasantly) if we get it.

Of-course, of-course. But we must weigh it against many things -- TGLs, etc. My very loose rule of thumb is to get globe roughly the same time we go bureaucracy. Because that's when an increased population would enjoy the 50% bonus. And I say "is not crucial at the moment", not "not crucial.". We are size 8 with happy cap at 10. Globe can wait awhile while we reap the benefits of +6B scientist or +2H3B engineer.

Zeus isn't necessary. If we war, we'l (hopefully) be warring in enemy culture. So they won't accumulae much WW anyways so it's really not an issue. We just have to have the globe before we start warring (also not really an issue).

i'm guessing that TGLighthouse is for denial purposes, no? We won't be having all that many trader routes w/the always war AI :crazyeye: [ahh, now i see fox's post]

depending on how much we want to deny the AI htese wonders, we could use that GE to rush one we feel we're in danger of not getting. i know we'd like to settle him for the extra hammers/beakers, but we should weigh that advantage against that which the AI would get from say, the Lighthouse, on this water-heavy map. I'm still not sure which would be best.

Settling the engineer will get us closer to our goal...and that goal is more research, more production and eventually, producing 1 turn units. Were gonna need 150 hammers for both grennys and cannons...galleons are 120, so even if youre close to 150, you could build a galleon and send the overflow into another unit.

I see us sending 3-4 galleons worth of units to each civ razing coastal towns as we go. Once everyone is trimmed back enough, we can start an inland invasion force. The faster we can get to the point of building 1 turn units, the better off we are. I vote we settle every Great Person except 1 for an academy and 1 to bulb education. Bulbing education is just something i do to get Oxford as quickly as possible. We dont have to that.

Let em have the Great Lighthouse...thats where our first armada will go and raze that puppy.

@wonders

I think that we should focus in the specialist giving wonders ( GLibrary and ToA ) SoZ ( to hurt the AI... ) and the specialist enhacers ( A wat,... ). All the rest is optional.

@GE settling vs rushing

I'm for settling.... we're in Rep and this game will last for a while; both things favor the settling

Random thoughts:

That island west of us should be kept under the eye... it looks to be the only place where a AI could base air units to strike us, the only real threath if we can have a decent navy ( I discovered that in my test game :gripe: )

Other thing that I learned is that privateers are useless as money collectors if we are in war with the civ ( they shouldn't be unflagged ships? Then how the game decides to not give me the money just because I ( not the privateer owner ;) ) am in war with the AI? :crazyeye: Must contact Bhruic ;) )

Spoiler :

The local sheriff was looking for a deputy, so a guy went in to try out for the job.
"Okay," the sheriff drawled, "tell me what is 1 and 1?"
"11" he replied.
The sheriff thought to himself, "That's not what I meant, but he's right. What two days of the week start with the letter 'T'?"
"Today and tomorrow."
The sheriff was again surprised that the guy supplied a correct answer that he had never thought of himself.
"Okay, who killed Abraham Lincoln?"
The guy looked a little surprised himself, then thought really hard for a minute and finally admitted, "I don't know."
"Well, why don't you go home and work on that one for a while?"
So, the guy went back, and when his pals asked how was the interview. he replied excitedly, "It went great! First day on the job and I'm already working on a murder case!"

So the engineer was settled. That was really the only sensible choice.

Although I strongly disagree with not building the Great Lighthouse, I continued with the Hanging Gardens. I guess I had myself to blame for not stating it earlier. Anyway, the matter was settled. End of discussion. We are going to face the consequences of letting it pass.

We got the gardens,

and we got a useless but nonetheless good fortune:

The gardens pushes us 1 pop pass happiness, so I selected barracks and MM'ed the city such that we can whip the barracks for 2 pops next turn. After the whip, I suggest removing the pop working on fish to slow growth a bit. I also advise that the hammer overflow go to the Great Library.

okay, i've got a spare 30 mins tonight. Got it for a report in about 7-8 hrs.

With the copper connected and a barracks whipped we should produce a few axes. We'll be doing most of our warring with grens/rifles and beyond I assume. Having some earlier CR promoted troops that can be upgraded will be a good thing.

I assume we're going Great Library, theatre then Globe Theatre?

What about research path?

Calendar would get the spices on line (we don't need the happy but it will be a nice square when plantationed) and open up Optics.

Code of Laws will allow Civil Service.

Compass will allow harbour which will give us 3 health.

The three Cs. I'd go Compass, Code of Laws, Civil Service myself.

EDIT: Can caravels pillage? If they can we should beeline Optics, find the AI and destroy their fishies.

Well, this was a fast set. I only played 11 or 12 turns as we got to a nice breakpoint.

I whipped the rax for 2 pop, and stuck the overflow into TGL ~ only 9 turns to go from there. I MM'ed for production for a bit until it finished

Drama and TGLibrary went according to plan:

[Went w/CoL on the way to Civil Service.]

After this, I went first w/Colossus, and then changed to the Temple of Artemis. Colossus was about 8 turns, while Artie was 14. I hadn't seen these previous posts (in fact, they came on in the about 10 mins i was playing!) I went to teh Temple mostly b/c it was a longer build, and thought we there was a greater chance to lose that one (though I'm not entirely sure how much the AI prioritizes Aesthetics, but I *think* MC isn't that high on the list).

I MMed again at this point to grow the turn our unhappiness faded; i left the specialists as is.

I stopped b/c our GP came in:
Civ4ScreenShot0004.jpg

Notice Zeus was built, too, that turn. So, at least one AI has Aesthetics.

I also used our worker to prechop some forests (he'll need to be stopped next turn so he doesn't chop the forest he's on), but i still think we should finish the chop and cottage that incense if we're not getting calendar anytime soon.

Agreed on Colossus being of higher priority. GE should be merged. We have take the chance that the AI who got TGLighthouse isn't the one who will get ToA, else coupled with harbors, we would have a runaway AI at hand.

I would switch to Colossus, then theatre (possibly whipping it to overflow into Globe).

CoL > CS is definitely the path. Coinciding the Globe with bureaucracy, IMHO, is the most optimal.

If it was a fast set ... where the hell is my JOKE!!!???

New Rule: Any player who forgets the joke twice in a row will receive a yellow card :)
