If the year doesn't help, then it's not related to the cold war, is it?
Sorry if my explanation was confusing; the exact year between those two dates is not itself relevant to the map.

To put it another way, I did not choose a specific year but if I had the composition would be different.

In Finland? :mischief:

I'll add another point and say that I have excluded some countries because their status might give it away. If we're getting too much further away, I'll post another map later today (my time.)

As promised, although perhaps a bit late, here is the new map.

Also, oopsie! I may have made a mistake for the first one. North Korea has been added as a purple state, although information after only a cursory search is a bit lacking.

Sorry, it's not that.

I'll give a big hint: if there was a guy named Nigelny Firageskov, he'd be against it. :mischief:

It seems to be tied to Russian influence of some sort.

Countries that signed trade agreements with the USSR.
This is very, very close!

edit: so close in fact I should just give it to you. The purple countries were observers, not full members, of COMECON, the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance, kind of the Soviet-backed version of the Marshall Plan.

Pink countries were members or associate members. China and Albania had dropped out of the organization by the late period, so I didn't bother to color them in.

It's Nigel Farage in "Russian".
Really? Because Google Translate gave me zhirnaya nikchemnaya zmeya for "oily, good-for-nothing snake".

Let's not cross thread-streams, thanks.

Gray = None? Not Applicable? No Data?

There are some very deprived bits of the world in red, but also some in green.
