Guess the map 16: No need for that latitude!

And the red and orange are different in the way they have the something?

Yes

I may as well add, political, economic, cultural, demographic?

None of the above, although it has an economic impact, and in some cases you could argue cultural

The countries marked in red and orange have something that the others don't.

Please excuse my inexact marking of the countries in question. I have missed some minor islands here and there.
It is geographic as in related to "geography"?

Are more hints needed here?

1. Most countries on the planet have something similar to what is marked on the map, although it does not qualify as what is marked on the map. The countries marked on the map essentially have a special version of this within their borders. This specialness is defined in a specific way, although it is in some ways somewhat arbitrary.

2. Depending on the online source we'd trust, there are about 25-30 countries on the planet that have nothing of the sort at all (special or non-special)

High speed rail of one sort or another?

High speed rail of one sort or another?

You got it!

Countries in red have high speed rail trains running at speeds faster than 300 km/h
Countries in orange have high speed rail trains running at speeds faster than 200 km/h but slower than 300 km/h

The exact definition of what is and isn't high speed rail can vary. Wikipedia says that NEW rail networks only qualify if the trains run faster than 250 km/h, but if an existing rail network is upgraded, then anything faster than 200 km/h qualifies. This all also depends on who you ask. To simplify things a bit, I included all rail networks that run faster than 200 km/h in the orange category, I did not want to look up what was upgraded and what was built from scratch.

Was this too easy?

I shall have a go if that's alright. I'm going to attempt to just upload this directly. Let me know if it's completely the wrong size, or should be uploaded to some external image hoster or something, and I will edit accordingly.

I also think this is probably relatively easy compared to some of the previous examples I've seen, so I'll start by providing zero clues, which may not be a great idea. And to top it all off, I can't even guarantee that it's 100% accurate! But to the best of my knowledge it'll be 95%+ accurate, hopefully enough to point to the correct answer anyway.

Edit: Updated map

It is slightly easier if you include it as an image link, like [you have now done]

Yes I edited it and did that. Adding it as an attachment and then linking to that attachment seemed like it probably wasn't the best way to do it, but it seemed to work...

Is the connection between all these countries cultural, political or related to a specific historic event?

Is the connection related to religion in any way?

There's definitely some overlap between the two spheres, but essentially no.

Edit: I should emphasise the "essentially no" part of that before I give the wrong idea. If you google "how is X connected to religion" you will will find results, and in some historical contexts it may have held some weight, but pretty much no.

No it's nothing as organised or official as that. Although it is economic and there will be some regulation involved, but cultural was probably nearer the mark.

I've updated the map as I rushed the original one a bit and I wanted to show some gradation too because that's quite relevant. I also did some digging to try and get some numbers for the scale and found some more examples so the highlighted countries have also changed slightly. I apologise for making this as confusing as possible :)

Note that the scale is logarithmic, so the darker colours indicate significantly more of "the thing" than the lighter colours.

Sources of social media and traditional media?

No and no.

I'll give a bit more information on the scale. There are 5 different shades of blue which represent the number of X in each country. From lightest to darkest, the shades roughly equate to...

- A few
- Up to around a dozen or so
- A few tens
- Many tens up to a couple of hundred
- Many hundreds to perhaps over 1,000

The white countries, as far as I can ascertain, have no examples, but it's entirely possible that any one of them may have 1 or 2, but not really more than that.

I did have trouble finding exact numbers as different sources were in disagreement, but within those broad classifications I think this is quite close.
