Have you ever died in your dream?

Some comment elsewhere made me think of this topic. Surely it is not unheard of to die in a dream (by which i mean to die inside the dream, not die in reality while dreaming). Personally, in the past, i saw many times dreams in which i died in their end, and sometimes i even deliberately caused my death in them so as to escape from the nightmarish world i was found in.

So you can answer if you too have had such an experience, and also you can describe it if you want to.

One thing i recall is just how horrible it felt to die from falling from tens of meters to the ground. I was forced to leave my house by falling over, and when i hit the ground i felt as if i had become one million different pieces. The pain and disgust lingered for a few seconds while i was awakening too, and i had to force myself consciously to distance my thoughts from that hideous sensation...

When I was a little kid I had a recurring nightmare, as in perhaps a hundred or more times, of being ridden down by a native American on a spotted white and brown horse and killed with an ax. The horse was white, the spots were brown.

I think virtually everyone here once had a dream about falling to death.

Really? I have not had that dream. I'm glad too, I don't much like heights although I worked at height for decades.

No, I don't ever recall dying in a dream.

Many times I have dream-died, where my death was the next step in the dream narrative, such as falling from aircraft. Many years ago I learned to discount the terror in the dream of its approach because at some level I realised this was not real.

There is only once I dreamed of an actual real life death, sitting across the table from my partner and son. That was unpleasant, and without being exhilarating.

I always wake up before I die.

In fact, one nightmare I killed myself in order to wake up, because I knew I was in a nightmare.

I have never known I was in a nightmare. To some degree, El_Machinae, you must be self aware when sleeping. I think that if I knew I was having a nightmare when that native american was riding me down then it would not have been so scary.

I'm fully self aware in my dreams and they are always realistic in some sense. I feel pain, emotion, and fatigue.

I have died plenty in my dreams, be it from a knife, sword, ax, gun, demon, etc.

It probably explains my fear of what comes after death because I experience my life dwindling away far too many times for my liking.

I once dreamed an ex-bf of a girl I was seeing was kicking me and just going crazy on me. But I think I woke up before I died. I can't recall every actually dieing in a dream.

The closest I ever got was dreaming I was playing Stranded II. I killed myself with a misaimed rocket launcher. (As of yet, I'm not sure why they have rocket launchers on a desert tropical island.)

I've had numerous dreams about being dead. In one I was a ghost; in another, "I" was flying through space toward the Gates of Hell, but they vanished when I declared that hell was made up nonsense...after which point I faded into the stuff of the cosmos. I can't recall a dream that involved my dying, though I have been maimed a few times.

I am only occasionally self-aware during a dream. Often I am not aware that I am dreaming, but only realise that I was once I wake up.

Reminds me of the interesting premise of this show

I had a dream about going to Heaven when I was four or so. Everything was made of leg casts, so nobody would have to worry about what to do if they broke a leg. I'm not sure how I died in the first place though.

Many many times and it always hurts like hell. Worst was radiation poisoning. Three days to die -_-

Numerous times. I've even had dreams where I saw my own grave that was surrounded by flowers. I've had dreams where I was a ghost watching my family morn my death. Dream deaths never scare me, though. It's better to think of them as having the meaning of 'what if' rather than what will be.
