How to get a job (or not)

Someone will need to explain to me what the difference here is, because until now I thought that a CV and a resume are the same o_O.

A resume is a targeted overview of jobs and responsibilities relevant to the job you're applying to, while a CV is more of a general record of employment, education, and accomplishments.

In practice, at least here in North America, you see CVs with people who have a lot of indirect experience (journals, projects, awards, coursework). Academia and research tend to prefer CVs, for example. But for most people a resume is what you should go with. CVs are more in-depth than a resume, but that's completely unnecessary for most jobs (e.g. a mid-level data analyst is unlikely to have enough indirect experience and publications to justify a CV).

Some places use the terms interchangeably, though. I know Quebec does, and I think in the UK as well? I've avoided the overseas market so all of my knowledge is based on NA.

I have social anxiety, and I don't like talking on the phone, or if someone approaches me without warning. I don't mind so much when people send me Skype messages I can read and reply to, but I usually won't answer a phone call if you don't talk to me by messenger or email first. When I go to the office, I can't get work done because someone keeps coming over to want to talk to me about something not work-related.
I used to be like this until my second internship. Another intern was my cube mate and he had been waiting on a quote from a vendor for months. At first he'd email once a week or so, then he stopped trying. He'd have to report every week for months that his project was stalled because of this quote but because it was a minor project, no one really cared. One day he was moaning about how he never got a quote and I was like, well have you tried calling them? He did and had the quote later that same day. I kind of figured at that point I need to not be like that guy and be super proactive about bugging people for stuff and taking/making phone calls. It's helped me a whole lot in my career.

I have no problem talking on the phone generally but I hate talking on the phone in a near-silent room where like 12 people can hear me.

Oh yeah thankfully my office has a bunch of small conference rooms to grab. I exclusively use those for calls.

We have a bunch of empty offices around the edge of the central space and I usually duck into one if I need to make a phone call.

Me and two of my coworkers were group chatting the other day about how stupid this webinar we were sitting through was

I use two monitors for work, and if I'm ever presenting I use my second screen for screen sharing, so my notifications don't show up. Also I can set myself to "Presentation" mode so no one can contact me with new messages. My company uses Skype for Business which works for many things, including group chats ... but I don't do those regularly, mostly just one-on-one messages.

Everything aero related fits in one page. It's everything unrelated to aero before that which doesn't fit.

Always good to keep it to 1

After I got two monitors at work, I have to have two at home too, it's just so wonderful ... it's how I play Civilization 6 and post here (while also working, lol!) My desk is very cluttered with four screens.

Oh, all of my company's conferences are virtual, which I guess makes things easier lol.

You gotta engage your deep sexy radio ready phone voice.

I've had a couple of phone heavy jobs, and after a few weeks I start speaking this way, and it delivers results. It energizes the person on the other side of the line and gives them the pep to help you out as it helps them out. Meanwhile, you sound good but still poke-fun-able to your coworkers. Win-win.

I try to speak in that deep sexy radio voice and my wife just breaks out laughing asking me 'just who do I think I'm trying to fool?'.

That's when you say "you baby" in the same voice and lean in to that swerve until you are inevitable.

after 30 years, nothing is inevitable. Except the laughter.

I've also found having a woman for a boss is incredibly beneficial too,
While my current boss is great my best boss ever was a woman.
Super smart, swore like a trooper, straight talking but looked like a 20 stone housewife and wore stillettos, even while reducting her walls at home. a true force in this world.

Two out of my favorite 3 bosses were women. Even rarer when you consider it was in the IT field.

I have had 3 IT female bosses.
Also I worked in an IT team in NZ where the majority were female.
In my current UK team there is about 60 and 5 are female
So while it could be better it is not dire.

I work for a now French Company in the US with a Woman as the CEO, but in North America we have almost 0 female Devs. Almost all the woman in IT here are on the help desk.

I thought you were retired.

Soon. Hopefully the end of the year. I don't turn 65 till later this year. Health care is the only thing stopping me. (and they're still paying me stupid money)
