Polish science fiction is generally very interesting, perhaps in part because it is comparatively obscure, but also because its often really good. I've read a short story in a Polish science fiction anthology recently with a premise that I consider to be potentially NES-worthy. Basically, humanity acquires technology for highly-expensive "stargates" that allows it to streamline exploration and colonisation of outer space; however, when earth-like planets, and planets with alien technology, are dsicovered, brushfire colonial wars begin and a "scramble for space" of sorts begins, with USA, China, Russia, Germany, Arab League, France (its near future, and presumably a one with an "EU breaks up/never unifies" scenario, and closer Arabic cooperation) and three huge conglomerates ("exploration companies"; one of these is backed by the most powerful corporations of the USA and Europe, another is led by Japanese and South-East Asian businessmen) as main players. Not all that original, but it has its interesting twists. Oh, and there is no real contact with alien civilisations yet, apart from the weird transmission that started it all. Basically I imagine it being like Hellfire's space NES, but far less constrained in colonisation speed and extent.
