New NESes, ideas, development, etc

Here's a pic of the city I whipped up:

Polish science fiction is generally very interesting, perhaps in part because it is comparatively obscure, but also because its often really good. I've read a short story in a Polish science fiction anthology recently with a premise that I consider to be potentially NES-worthy. Basically, humanity acquires technology for highly-expensive "stargates" that allows it to streamline exploration and colonisation of outer space; however, when earth-like planets, and planets with alien technology, are dsicovered, brushfire colonial wars begin and a "scramble for space" of sorts begins, with USA, China, Russia, Germany, Arab League, France (its near future, and presumably a one with an "EU breaks up/never unifies" scenario, and closer Arabic cooperation) and three huge conglomerates ("exploration companies"; one of these is backed by the most powerful corporations of the USA and Europe, another is led by Japanese and South-East Asian businessmen) as main players. Not all that original, but it has its interesting twists. Oh, and there is no real contact with alien civilisations yet, apart from the weird transmission that started it all. Basically I imagine it being like Hellfire's space NES, but far less constrained in colonisation speed and extent.

@Thlayli- It doesn't take much time at all really. It's not affecting my updating.

Would you like to start a community in there?

Really? I've played SimAnt, SimCitys 2000, 3000 and 4, SimEarth, SimLife, SimCopter, the Sims series, and (in the future) Spore.

How can you live without sandbox games? :p

I played SimCity 2000 and I confess I never really understood it.

I played SImTower, SimFarm, SimCopter, both Sims.

Sandbox games are fun. But I never understood how to play SimCity.

Oh yes, though I can never get skyscrapers to start in a less then 50k city GRRR :( And those evil picky citizens... They just REFUSE to walk ONE block to get to the bus station! :mad:

This post made me laugh :lol:

I was really good at Sim City 3 but the new one I had troubles with. I also played Sim Life a lot. I would leave it running and bamboo would evolve to live in the water and literally cover the face of the planet.

Lord Iggy, your sim city idea seems cool. I would play it.

SImTower, SimFarm,
Oh yeah, I've played those too. Though I never figured out how to get an economically successful tower. :(

Doing a little test at home, I've determined that I could easily run LINESII and a low-budget SC4 NES. And because LINESII is on hold until february, the SC4 NES could be something to do until I start getting the long timeblocks I need to update LINESII (if I do it piece-by-piece it is firstly poor quality and fragmented, and secondly a chore rather than fun creative writing).

For how the proposed SimCity NES would work, basically it would be quite freeform. Just say what you want to do. IE: Start up a neighbourhood, create industrial or commercial areas, build a structure. You could also go more indepth if you feel like it. Ask for me to build your area with lots of green spaces, curving drives and crescents instead of constant grids, etc. Or even forming a mob and destroying parts of other people's cities if you feel like it. Or building an army base (when the opportunity arrives) and sending tanks instead of mere bulldozers.

The rest of the NES would be powered by stories about your town, in the eyes of you/your mayor/your people.

Oh, and to confirm, these would all be cities within one 'city'. I won't use different cities in the region, as that would prevent major player to player contact.

If you want to join, just put a big red dot on the picture I posted earlier and tell me what you want to do. If there's enough interest, I'll start a thread.

If this starts, I'll play; westernmost island. I can come up with some ideas for it later. :)

EDIT: if you happened to have the region to upload, we who have Sim City 4 could be exceptionally active in planning the city. ;)

I've got some problems with uploading large save files with my IP provider. So I'll be doing the work, on your orders.

I think I'll start the thread now, and write a quick opening update for you two. More people can join once the thread has started.

Sounds more than just a bit like the premise for my new NES (shameless plug). But then of course I level the playing field some time after that, making it a fresh start NES, which I guess wasn't quite what you were after. :rolleyes: But the story is all there, for those who like space adventure. Starting up this week, closed for new factions at first orders deadline so hurry if you want in! :D

Sorry, I barely have enough time for Birdjaguar's NES, and I'm not particularily a fan of space NESes, though thats largely because all the ones I had played in thus far died way too soon. May I join as a NPC or a new faction in February?

My intention has been to close the NES for new factions once the game starts. The map is limited, and "home systems" are more productive, so any late joiners would suffer from that. But I've had this question several times now, and maybe I won't be so adamant when the time comes. We'll see how it all works by then. But until then, lurk by all means. :)

The following sub-section is available for the perusing of curious onlookers (although not much is unique except α Research):

Spoiler INVESTMENTS :
The Investments category lists all Projects and α/β Research a country is pursuing or has completed. Its subcategories are as follows:

Spoiler α RESEARCH :
α Research is hereby defined as research paradigms you might acquire. That is to say, α Research are all the technologies that might be researched on the tech-tree. α Research is gained by setting Research Priorities, which are as follows:
  • Build: Advances related to infrastructural development and growth.
  • Conquer: Advances with direct potential military applications.
  • Discover: Advances in the realm of “pure science” and theory
  • Explore: Advances in the understanding the physical universe and manipulating it.
Research Priorities dictate what technological areas a society will focus towards, and increase the likelihood of obtaining technologies in that field (but do not guarantee it).

α Research technologies are randomly selected, with input from preferences, at the beginning of the game, or upon completion of previous research. α Research does not require funding to complete, and exemplifies the unorganized progress of civilian research establishments. The progress of α Research is given by the following formula:

Time to Completion = Research Cost / (Literacy Rate x Total EP Count)

Spoiler β RESEARCH :
β Research is hereby defined as anything you can feasibly do which constitutes a theoretical directive, derived from α Research. β Research might be a cure for cancer, inventing the microwave, or developing a new jet fighter. Research will be conducted by submission of a proposal to the moderator, including the following information:

Codename: {name research is referenced by}
Function: {the distilled, simple function of the research}
References: {any sources for additional information you feel prudent to cite}
Overview: {a more detailed description of the aim of the research}
Estimated Cost and Time: {your own estimate of its cost and time}

A response will be issued indicating whether the β Research proposal is feasible, and if so what its true cost and time requirement will be based on the data supplied. A country is then free to budget its investments in its β Research as it sees fit in its orders. All β Research will take a certain amount of funding and time to complete. This will typically be displayed along with the Research codename and function. Research may also be indicated as secret if so desired. If this is chosen their function will not be displayed. There is no limit to the number of β Researches a country might pursue. β Research is only completed when both its cost and time requirements are met. An example of their presentation is as follows:

Murakumo (Development of Jet Fighter [1/3:5/5])

The project’s name is Damocles, its function is the Development of a Jet Fighter, it has 1 out of 3 EP invested and is 5 out of 5 turns to completion.

Spoiler PROJECTS :
A Project is hereby defined as anything you can feasibly do which constitutes an applied directive. A Project might be to build the Panama Canal, to restructure a country’s military, or to put a man on the Moon. Projects will be conducted by submission of a proposal to the moderator, including the following information:

Codename: {name project is referenced by}
Function: {the distilled, simple function of the project}
References: {any sources for additional information you feel prudent to cite}
Overview: {a more detailed description of the aim of the project}
Estimated Cost and Time: {your own estimate of its cost and time}

A response will be issued indicating whether the project proposal is feasible, and if so what its true cost and time requirement will be based on the data supplied. A country is then free to budget its investments in its Projects as it sees fit in its orders. All Projects will take a certain amount of funding and time to complete. This will typically be displayed along with the project codename and function. Projects may also be indicated as secret if so desired. If this is chosen their function will not be displayed. There is no limit to the number of projects a country might pursue. A Project is only completed when both its cost and time requirements are met. An example of their presentation is as follows:

Damocles (SECRET [1/5:2/6])

The Project’s name is Damocles, its function is Secret, it has 1 out of 5 EP invested and is 2 out of 6 turns to completion.

Obviously this is very much zygote devlopment stage.. but just shooting the breeze to see what you think...for a start i expect to get at least a few months NES experience before imagining creating a ruleset.

Would people NES is a "fun" fantasy CFC based world? To not cause too much commontion it will still involve nation building, but the main winning cause will be "spaceship" i.e. discovering the fridge and returning it.. of course splatting a few opponents out the way wouldnt harm your chances ;)
