New NESes, ideas, development, etc

No tech tree has my vote.

A tech tree would be pointless. Throw in occasional inventions when you feel like it.

I fourth that. Research is pointless over such a short time, it shouldn't last longer then five years.

In that time, technological advances were made by private individuals that spent their leisure time and money investigating whatever the hell fancied them. It wasn't until the end of the XIX century that governments would take an actual, big hand into researching.

If you must, simly have a technology stat as a number~ those who spend more on it are more advanced an you adjust battle stats by it.

That is arguably worse than specific tech tree inventions, because it keeps the lunacy of governmental influence on research in the early 19th century and confines the research to a purely military sphere.

Nah, I've seen NESes that weren't war games. BombNES had plenty non-war related stuff happening in it, but sadly it seems to have come to a halt...

Probably because either: -
a) the players got bored because there isn't any war going on
b) the mod got bored because there isn't any war going on.

I've been thinking of starting up a new NES; one that is partly based on the (I assume defunct) RebelNES.

It would take place on a relatively small island in the Caribbean, something around 1,000 - 5,000 population. The setting would be 1950s Cold War, with the major powers in the region being the United States and the USSR, with some other Latin American nations in the mix. The island would be an extremely weak democracy, with plenty of opportunities for rebellion, cooperation, and elections. (Should they occur)

Players would be the head of a minor group within a larger faction, such as a Communist Youth organization, a platoon of government troops, a tourist corporation, etc.
These minor groups could cooperate with eachother to work towards common goals (Usurpation of government, healthcare, removal of foreign interests, etc.) or divide up the factions. Eventually, minor groups could become the leader of their faction.

The factions would probably include Capitalists, Socialists (With Communists included in this faction), Nationalists, Environmentalists, Foreign Interests, Religious people, and the army. (With room for expansion)

The island would be a poor, mostly agricultural nation. There would probably be 2-3 towns including the capital. However, it would also have a good deal of untapped natural resources. It would basically be a banana republic, with the possibility of riches.

This is of course a basic overview with room for improvement, but would anyone be interested in such an NES?

Yeah, that would work much better in a video game setting.

The emphasis is rather different, though, don't you think?

Semi-satisfied. I still think its rather boring. But that might be because its only partly finished. This also serves to prove that I actually do stuff sometimes. (I'm not just a pretty unseen face: don't mope Thlayli).

This is not to get you excited or anything, I don't have anything solid lined up (an open-world RPG sort of thing with subplots that converge into the main plot is semi-written up though), but I think this advert banner I made is really cool /inflate ego again /sig unrelated, that's a programming project

I think EQ tried something similar some time ago.

While I realise most of those who frequent this thread would be uninterested, as it is not serious enough for them, I am considering bringing another ZPNES to the table. Present day earth would be the start, with most of the big nations represented (Risk scale "big"). Players would also be free to play as Aliens/Zombies/Mermaids etc.. each with their own lives to live. Stats/Maps would be little if insignificant. Heck, individuals can update the map as they please. A fun-ridiculus NES, a PURE nes.
