PH02: Eight Angry Men

No problem, Lobster ~ I would say that looks good as a plan. but we can't build chariots no matter what b/c we've got no one to hook them up!

Ah yes! A Worker! I had forgotten that little detail!

pholkhero said:
also, it may be unpopular, but i think that founding a city near copper for our UU ASAP is needed, so we *may* want to think about delaying a worker...at least out of Athens...we could whip them from Sparta with all those 3f flood plain tiles to work.

I agree. I'll continue to produce Archers our of Athens until it's ready to whip another Settler. Sparta can handle producing a Worker after it's pop hits 2.

Should I play 15 or 20?

uhm...let me see..5 people...50 turns done with 2....3 people left...15, 15, 10 sound good...will get us to 100 after the first go round...

go get 'em Lobster!! Viva la Emperor!

15 turns it is!

edit: Incidentally, I'm "up" in two other SGs now (including the 'Teers' SG, pholk), but I'll play this one first.

50+15+15+10 = 100??? I knew we must research Mathematics sooner rather than later ....

And now something from the lurker department:

!!!! L-O-L !!!!

We now continue with our regularly scheduled hilarity.

Lurker's comment:

This Math thing never was one of pholky's genuine skills. He usually loses wonders by 2 turns and almost wins games by the same amount. Bloody math ! :D

Turn 1: (2470 BC)
Herodotus, that so-called "Historian", writes to inform us that we are the poorest civilization in the world! Come back when you've got some good news, whydon'tcha!

Technology discovered: Mysticism --> Animal Husbandry (13)
As predicted, we can :whipped: the Settler in Athens, so I proceed to do so. (Lose a turn on Research, however - AH now in 14.)

There are now 3 Barbarians - a Warrior and two Archers - within two tiles of our Archer/Warrior pair!
Our Warrior could attack the Barb Warrior, but the odds are somewhat less than 70%, and I don't want to risk losing him.

IBT: Barb Warrior attacks our Archer/Warrior combo ... and is defeated!
While defending Greek Archer (0.8/3) defeats Barbarian Warrior.

Turn 2: (2440 BC)
Athens completes: Settler --> Archer (11). Switch tile from an floodplain to a forested, grassland hill to speed production. (Lose another turn on AH.)
Our Archer did not gain a promotion, so back to Athens he goes. I debate also withdrawing the Warrior too, but decide instead to move our City Garrison I Archer from Athens out to the forested hill.

IBT: The first Barb Archer attacks the Archer/entrenced Warrior...and is defeated!
While defending Greek Archer (3.0/3) defeats Barbarian Warrior. No damage!
The second Archer decides to advance on Athens.

Turn 3: (2410 BC)
City Garrison Archer moves back to Athens. Another Barb Warrior is approaching from the south.

Turn 4: (2380 BC)

IBT: Barbarian Archer goes for the Warrior camped out on the Hill...
While defending Greek Warrior is killed by a Barbarian Archer (1.8/3)! NOOOOOO!! The rat-bastard Barbarian wins! [pissed] I guess that I should have retreated our Warrior after all!

Yet another Barbarian Warrior shows up from the south. At this rate, our Settler will never leave Athens!

Turn 5: (2350 BC)

IBT: The wounded Barb Archer attacks Athens...
While defending Greek Archer (3.0/3) defeats Barbarian Archer. and earns a City Garrison II promotion!

Still another Barb Archer appears in the NW.

Turn 6: (2320 BC)
The Barb Warrior does not attack. Now there are two Barb Warriors at the gates of Athens, a Barb Archer approaching from the NW, another approaching from the NE and a third Barb Warrior approaching from the SW! Raging Barbarians indeed!

IBT: Nobody attacks! Now three Barb units adjacent to Athens!

Turn 7: (2290 BC)
We've got to get Sparta founded, so I move our Settler with his now fully-healed Archer escort onto the forested hill, leaving only the CG II Archer to defend our great capital against an Archer and two Warriors. This could be the game, right here...

IBT: Here it is, the Moment of Truth...
While defending, Greek Archer (2.28/3) defeats: Barbarian Archer.
While defending, Greek Archer (2.28/3) defeats: Barbarian Warrior.
While defending, Greek Archer (1.95/3) defeats: Barbarian Warrior.
3 for 3! :woohoo: For his fortitude, our studly Archer is renamed Achilles!

Turn 8: (2260 BC)
Settler with Archer escort moves over to the next hill. They land adjacent to a Barb Warrior who I expect will attack.

IBT: And here he comes...
While defending, Greek Archer (2.30/3) defeats: Barbarian Warrior.
Our Archer earns a promotion, and I give him City Garrison I!

Turn 9: (2230 BC)
Cresting the hill overlooking the valley in which Sparta will soon be founded...the way is clear! No Barbs or Mongols in sight!

IBT: Achilles defeats another Barb Warrior...
While defending, Greek Archer (Achilles) (3.0/3) defeats: Barbarian Warrior.

Turn 10: (2200 BC)
Nearly there...

IBT: No Barbarians storm the gates of Athens, and Achilles finally has time for a pedicure.

Turn 11: (2170 BC)
SPARTA IS FOUNDED! [party] At last!
Sparta begins: Obelisk (45)

Turn 12: (2140 BC)

IBT: Stalwart Achilles defeats another Barb Warrior...
While defending, Greek Archer (Achilles) (1.8/3) defeats: Barbarian Warrior. Yikes! That was too close for comfort.
Fortunately, the victory earns Achilles a City Garrison III promotion!

Turn 13: (2110 BC)

IBT: Another Barb Warrior assaults Athens:
While defending, Greek Archer (Achilles) (1.5/3) defeats: Barbarian Warrior. Another close call!

Meanwhile the first Barb attacks Sparta:
While defending, Greek Archer (Achilles) (3.0/3) defeats: Barbarian Warrior.

Turn 14: (2080 BC)
Athens completes Archer --> Archer (35) and none too soon!
Suddenly there is only a single Barb visible on the map.

IBT: Achilles takes on still another Barb to close out my turns:
While defending Greek Archer (Achilles) (2.10/3)defeats: Barbarian Warrior

Animal Husbandry is in next turn, and Athens will hit 3 pop. Sparta is working a flood plain in order to grow, but once it hits 2 pop, there is a forested grassland hill there that can be worked to speed the Obelisk. Given the Barb threat, I recommend allowing the Obelisk to finish for a quick border pop before we start on our first Worker.

The Khan still hasn't settled next to the Copper. Hopefully he has been wrestling with Barbs too. With so many Barbs about, taking a copper city early may be difficult due to defender promotions.

I had thought that I had taken a more screen shots to better illustate the action, but I guess not. Here's a picture of our little empire:

okay, okay, so i can't add ~ big deal ~not like i need that skill ~ "what the tab is $3.45? Sure, here's a $50. What, no change? Okay, that seems right." ;)

Now i know what an AI Dogpile feels like! Thanks guys....lurkers, too! a-holes, all of you! :goodjob:

Great going on Sparta, Lobster; your Lone Archer Gambit scared the crap out of me!! I found myself holding my breath as i scrolled down!

So, should we keep Athens churning archers until we can get to size 4? work on the settler until whipable OR make archers until size6 and then we could whip the settler after 1 turn? these extra archers could be used for barb watching/fog busting and let our interior be developed with a worker.

Sparta ~ we can whip that obelisk once it pops to 2 ~ any overflow could be used for another archer until we get back up to size 2....we could even divert teh flow into a worker adn get one out quickly to connect our cities....

I agree on holding off on some workers for now, but once we get some archers up and about, we'll need at least 3, maybe 4 of them to catch up the AI's lead. If we're lucky, barbs ahve hijacked some of the AIs free workers.

I think we should repeat the "4 Pop Athens Settler Whip" routine once more to try to nab that copper! Looking at the Power graph, Genghis appears to have suffered some losses (there's a dip in his line). He must have founded his second city to the West, so we may be able to grab that copper yet. If he gets there first, we can always change the plan.

Godjob getting Sparta settled! One thing though ... isn't Archilles more of an attacker than defender? :crazyeye:

Now, next objective is ... Take the buddhist holy city ... Guess I will leave that to our mathematician captain ... :)

I have it, playing in 5 mins .... I will see what I can do with coming up with an obelisk in Sparta, a worker, archers and settler .... whta else do you guys want? Might as well add whatever you heart desire to the wish list so that I can ruefully ignore it and play it my own way, since no way I can possibly fullfill that :D

--

Archers until we can do the"4 Pop Athens Settler Whip" and phalanx' and workers after that.
Then we go for the Buddha!

An absolutely uneventful turnset. Animal Husbandry learnt, archer built, obelisk whipped.

Here is the save --- >>> The Save (1600BC) <<<

Next player.

...

What? You want more?

Ok, there is of-course the matter of barbs.

ph02-BC2020-barb.jpg

Ok, Archilles is already at 10exp, so barb can give him no more kick.

It should be the other young archer's turn to gain some exp. However, if the archers only hide within the city, he will forever live under the shadow of Archilles, since its always archilles that is choosen for battle when barb attack. Thus, I sent the archer out to face the barb instead of waiting for the barbs to come ...

Also, as noted in the above figure, we have those four-legged beasts uncovered by AH south of the capital.

Ok, back to the training of the young apprentice.

While defending, Archer defeats (3.00/3) Barbarian Warrior

:woohoo:, free XP!

Later, I got tired of defending, time for some offensive training ....

ph02-BC1960-barb.jpg

While attacking, Archer defeats (2.04/3) Barbarian Warrior

Heh, what was it they say? Offense is the Best Defense (TM).

Now, barb archers start appearing ...

ph02-BC1870-barb.jpg

While defending, Archer defeats (0.42/3) Barbarian Archer

, our young apprentice almost died!!! That is absurb. There is a 50% penalty for river crossing attacks! :aargh:

So, the young apprentice learnt his lessons: its better to live old under the shadow of a great hero than to die young. So back he went into Athens.

However, we have another even younger apprentice, and its his time to re-learn the lessons ... however, he is does learn from his predecessor's experience. On top of enjoying a river crossing penalty, he also has 50% forest defense.

ph02-BC1660-barb.jpg

While defending, Archer defeats (1.20/3) Barbarian Archer

Slightly better, but the results favour the barbs in fact.

OK, enough of training ... here is the situation at th end of my turnset. On top of AH, we have also learnt The Wheel. As you can see in the picture below, we are currently learning how to make pots ... beg you pardon ... cottages. (what does pots have to do with cottages? :crazyeye:)

ph02-BC1600-sit.jpg

Also shown in the piture is I switched us to settler, with another archer in queue (2 turns invested). Its not whippable yet, so wait a few more turns. The archer fooling around with the silkworms should provide escort for the settler when it is finally whipped.

One more thing is notice the defender in Sparta was slightly damaged, and there is one more barb just outside the city. Should still win though. The fact that the defender s injured goes to shows that the the RNG odds are against us.

Yet one more thing also from the pic above ... Sparta is producing worker ...

I'm assuming we want to round up the horses with city 3? These barbs are insane -- How likely is it an archer can survive an escort job outside our cities?

We need that Copper, baby!

i also think the Barbs get a bonus when fighting against us...or we get a penalty...something like that...anybody know or know where to find the AI bonuses we're up against...
