I vote for the latter.
 
I have already decided on it. While it offers less in the way of defense, and debatably, Hankish character (insofar as Hankish character can be described as using fusion cores instead of deuterium drives and having an obsessive love affair with light sails) it offers better cargo capacity and range.
 
To open this up for more general input: my current intent is to try and have a small text directory listing of hab space by faction per system, and on the map surface proper (possibly in the form of an annulus around the star or row/column block by the name) have a tally of regions controlled. (Open question: how to integrate orbital/deep space stations?)
 
Nope, both will be color-coded-to-faction for at-a-glance ease.

Visuals are probably prudent: where it was vs. where it is now. Alignments and positions are not final. Latter has the skeleton of a system listing, and assumes territory annuli will be used; strategic annuli were removed because they look kind of cluttered and aren't supremely important (perhaps pips by the name or in the directory, or a smaller inset map; now that I type this, I favor the latter.).

Edit: How would people feel about skipping the ship icons for now and just having ship names on the map? Making them is kicking my butt.

Fine by me! I'll get those two ship names to you soon, I've just been wickedly busy traveling around Eastern Iceland for the last few days.

.ai is attached. Some of it's Live Painted so I'm not sure how it translates to other programs. If it looks different than this let me know and I'll clean it up and send you a new file.

This is fine. Another thing you might consider is instead of making custom ship icons for each faction, make an icon for each category of ship (the ship list ones, not the overmap ones) and display them in faction colors. This will be easier to identify at a glance, more compact, and less work. Sorta like a DRADIS display or something. I tried doing this for ChaNES back in the day but it was on the overmap and too small to really ID well and were ugly.

For the world graphic, might be worth inserting some pixels or points on the corners of the asymmetric faction icons so they don't get crushed like one dimension like the Iris and Hank ones are. Not sure about the background, though I imagine it's only temporary. I'll work on getting you the stars with flares this weekend.
