Random Rants 94 I rant at the thread title and shake my fist menacingly.

I use a laptop, at home not a desktop...
Always have a spare, so you can deal with situations like this or if your mouse suddenly stops working properly or dies.
I have multiple spares, some wireless-usb, some wired/usb. I'm using one of my wired ones now... but it still sucks not having my regular mouse.

I left my mouse at work!! [pissed]

I was going to express flabbergastation (that's a word; I invented it over 10 years ago on Cheezburger) that you only have one mouse that both your computers have to share. :dubious:

But it seems that you left your favorite mouse, but you still have a spare.

So you'll get your favorite back on Monday?

There's a 2 inch glass lens on my floor somewhere. Comes from a little gauge that I dropped and it came apart. I can't spot it, even shining a bright light everywhere. If I step on it, it'll shatter into my foot.

My computer at work is a desktop that has its own, wired mouse, but sometimes I bring my main laptop to work so that I can work on both computers simultaneously. Sometimes I am watching a video on one while typing on the other, or attending a remote event on one while typing notes or a document on the other... things like that. I have a wireless mouse for my laptop, and when I left work I just forgot my wireless mouse
But it seems that you left your favorite mouse, but you still have a spare.
I have multiple spares, plus I have multiple laptops, including the laptops my wife and kids use, so there is no shortage of having a mouse to use if I need it. Still, I like my regular mouse (Microsoft wireless usb). I'm using a Microsoft wired usb mouse right now. As an aside, I learned this weekend that even if you have a duplicate usb mouse, the usb wireless receiver is hard-coded to the mouse it came with, so even though I had another identical Microsoft wireless mouse at home, I couldn't use it, because the usb receiver it came with is broken, and I can't re-assign the receiver inserted in my laptop to the other mouse, despite them being the exact same brand/model. So essentially, once the usb receiver breaks, the mouse is garbage. So I'll have to order another spare.
So you'll get your favorite back on Monday?
Yes I'm not going to drive all the way to work just to pickup my regular mouse so I'll just get it tomorrow when I return to work.

Or posting on CFC when you should be working, ya deadbeat.

The new year is 40 minutes old for you. Go back to sleep.
You guys are sleeping? :p

Dunno about Synobun. I've been awake for close to 20 hours. It's nearly 5 am here now, and I'm off to bed in a few minutes.

Was looking forward to watching Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl.
It was on BBC on Christmas Day but I didn't record it on my free to air satellite box as it was coming to Netflix a few days later.

Now I sat down to find it to watch with my kids this evening and it isn't available in Ireland.

Netflix advertised it as being available everywhere except the UK where it is available on the BBC iPlayer. Netflix don't seem to distinguish between Ireland and the UK treating us as a single market.

I guess they don't want to highlight it as except UK and Ireland because there is no legal alternative to watch it in Ireland.

I'll probably just wait till it comes to Netflix here.

It's almost your moral prerogative to pirate it then.

AH-CHOO!

Somebody gave me a very bad cold.

This is absolutely not fair. I got my flu and covid shots.

Please PM chicken soup and kleenex.

And Dr. Tinycat. Dr. Tinycat would be very welcome right now.

Dear whoever made situation-ships,
Please never create anything again. You have eternally cursed my dating life.

This isn't really much of a rant but I wasn't sure where else to post this.

My mom's mom passed away sunday night. She had dementia and was getting progressively worse.. Dementia is such a depressing disease.. Back in 2018 my grandmother was living on her own even, at the ripe age of 85. She was so independent! Even went grocery shopping on her own. I visited her twice, I'm really glad I did that. She was about 200km from here, but I'm glad I made the trip to spend a couple nights there, both times. We hung out, chatted, she made me food and snacks. It was good time. Then she had a series of operations that seem to have triggered the dementia. She had to be put in a home, much closer to us this time (and further away from my aunt), and every month she was just getting worse. She'd remember less and less. Often she did not even remember my mom or my aunt, her daughters. It was depressing. My mom lived closer to the home where she was at, so it sort of became my mom's job/duty to go visit her and look after her and feed & change her whenever they'd call to say that they just couldn't do it. Trained nurses unable to feed an elderly woman? Or change her clothes? What? It was so enraging.. I went with my mom a couple times to help out and holy crap.. my grandma looked so frail and weak but she had so much POWER. I had to hold her arms and could barely do it, while she was being changed. She would just lash out and try to scratch and attack us. Had no idea who we were. It was so sad.. but.. yeah I guess I can SORT OF understand why the staff there couldn't do it.. but.. come on! This is your job. I wish we had more money to hire better care for my babcia.. but no such luck.. The place wasn't horrible, it was decent in the grand scheme of things, but it just seems the people working there weren't properly trained or prepared for all situations.

On saturday it became clear that the end was near. My grandma was weak and barely responsive, and eventually it was not possible to even feed her. Relatives from hundreds of km away made the journey to see her for one last time. She looked so peaceful.. Finally after all that time, she was just peacefully lying in bed, seemingly not in pain at all. She couldn't eat and she couldn't even speak, but there was something calming about seeing her so peaceful. It was like death was inevitable. At times it was like she was trying to tell us something. She tried to open her mouth to speak.. but it wasn't possible. Nothing came out. It FEELS like she knew what was happening and wanted to thank us for being there and tell us she loves us. I have no idea if that's the case, but it sure felt like it. We held her hand and reassured her as much as we could. She passed away very peacefully, surrounded by family.

Ever since then it's been super hectic dealing with all the administrative stuff.. The family came together, we took time off work, bereavement leave, etc. but we're still organizing everything. The funeral mass is here tomorrow. Everything is almost ready. Family from Poland is arriving. I have a reading to practice. My mom is cleaning, my sister is cooking. It's an odd time. It's good to be with family, but it's just.. well.. you know..

On one hand I'm glad that my mom will not have to worry about this anymore. They used to call her every other day and she'd have to drive over and help out. It took a toll on her. Now she will no longer have to deal with that. It was also so sad to watch my grandmother deteriorate the way she did. She was the matriarch of our family - a strong woman, with a very clever wit, really strong conviction, character, morals, and a masterful baker at that, not to mention cook. So to watch her not know who we are, was just so depressing. We will miss her deeply.

We are so glad she went so peacefully though. I am glad she will not suffer any more.. Will miss her soo much, but we've known that this was coming for a while now.. That makes it a bit easier.

I've been off work the last 2 days and today, helping out where I can. It's been super hectic but I've had a couple hours or minutes of spare time here and there, to sit back, and get back in my usual routine.. checking the forums, reddit, discord, maybe draw some ansi art, play a video game.

In a couple months my mom and aunt will be flying to Poland to transport the ashes. My grandmother's wishes were that she be buried there. I am thinking of joining them. I have not been back in Poland in 20 years now. It will be good to offer my support during all this and visit my grandmother's resting site, beside my late grandfather, a man who influenced me a huge deal. I am naming my home library after him. My grandparents were honestly the best, most moral, loving, and honest people I've ever known. I know that's easy to say, but a lot of my moral compass and personality is based on the lesson they passed down to me over the years

Condolences, warpus.

The sad truth of dementia is that it kills the victim twice - first the mind, and then the body. If the victim is lucky, not much time passes between those two. And it is heartbreaking when your loved one no longer knows you.

It's good that you have a family that all support each other.

Condolences. Dementia is hell.

Thank you all. This is such a different experience than when my father passed a year and a half ago. Very different circumstances and very different emotions.. and in some cases very similar emotions.. and very different everything, really. Both very sad, but in such different ways.

The last time before this I had to deal with death of anyone in the close family was 30 years ago.. and before that when I was 6. So a lot of this is sort of new to me.

I don't think I really knew what death was before. That seems like a silly thing to say, of course we all know what death is - someone dies and no longer is. But that's just the mask of death, there is so much more to it that really defines what death is.

I have never had to experience a loved one dealing with dementia before this either. I hope that I never do again and I hope a cure is possible and coming
