Random Raves XXVI: I Get High With a Little Help from My Friends

Went to career fair and talked to every single firm hiring aeros. I only got one callback and I had an interview with them today. I. nailed. that. interview.

I'm not even kidding, the woman who interviewed me told me it was her first time interviewing someone and that she was nervous. By the time it was over, she shook my hand and thanked me for being such an awesome first interviewee. She stopped herself midsentence from hiring me on the spot because though she is going to recommend me in the highest possible terms, she doesn't have the authority to hire me.

But she wants me working with her team, bad.

AMERICA F*&% YEAH!

But seriously, I'm pretty stoked. I'll have to move to Iowa for 6-7 months (sup Joecoolyo) but they pay great and they pay a housing stipend and it's really great experience, so win-win.

I'm crossing my fingers and hoping they will call me to come up to Iowa for my second (and final) interview. She basically told me that's a given, so I'm not too worried.

:D :D

Please, divulge your secrets. How did you do this?

Also, where in Iowa?

It's in Marshaltown, I think.

I am decently good at holding a conversation and that is really my only secret. I've only got a 3.2 GPA, so I'm nothing special in that department and I don't have design team experience. I don't really know, I just happened to have the right (non-design team) experience that they need and I wasn't nervous or anything.

I want a job and I'm excited at the prospect that I went from high school dropout working at Quiznos to applying for good paying internships at large engineering firms. Hell, I even told her that even if they didn't hire me, I was tickled to death to even generate some interest and warrant an interview.

I don't know what my secret is - just be serious, but enthusiastic and upbeat.

Oh and I'd hardly call it a secret. I applied to like 20 places and only got one call back, I never heard back from Lockheed after a promising intro and I've been passed over for several Boeing openings. I just don't stop trying.

This was me after the interview:

Rave: A friend has recently, begrudgingly acknowledged her new found taste for Calvin and Hobbes.

Rant: My eggs for physics, Calvin and Hobbes, died in a tragic straw and noodle related accident in which a crumple zone failed to crumple enough.

May they rest in peace.

Boo not Iowa City :p

But yeah, nice skills you got there, and congrats, you deserve it for all your effort. I can only wish to have such abilities with people.

I'm having a serious meltdown here. I can't contain myself.

Boeing is hiring.

They are hiring student interns.

They want these student interns to work on this:

OMGOMGOMGOMGOMG

I know a guy at Boeing. I am going to make this happen, even if I have to trade a kidney for a bus ride down to Huntsville to convince them in person that they need me. This rocket cannot lift off without my input. I know this because I was made to do this. I spent 4 effing years going from PRE-Algebra to Differential Equations, all so I could transfer to a real school just so I'd have this chance to apply for this job.

I will make this happen. OMGOMGOMG

meltdown emminent

Okay.

Last night I dreamed I was Gordon Freeman. And then I was in that cool yellow car from Episode 2, and Alyx was driving it, but then she drove it into a pond and it sunk and we had to walk the rest of the way. So we ended up at a place with a radio tower and then some striders and hunters and a few overwatch soldiers appeared out of nowhere and we were fighting them and then Father Grigori came out of nowhere and somehow killed the Strider with his rifle and then turned into the Heavy (??!?!). And then apparently White Forest Base was actually a treehouse and I woke up and my arm still hurt where a hunter rammed into it.

That was odd.

This sounds like the coolest dream ever.

Oh I meant to say thank you for the compliment. I just saw job description 'working on massive rocket system' and got all hot and bothered for a second whilst forgetting my manners like a chump.

I wonder what would happen if I used that mind trick when nobody else was around, considering I'm a woman.

Well I'd rather not have my computer infested with nasty bugs, so I didn't click anything.

I made a cool discovery by mistake. If a message window or error box comes up and you press ctrl+c, you can copy the contents of it as a text.

Tis ok mang, you're allowed to be excited :)

There were seven musical pieces in the season finale, so remixes should be coming in aplenty any time now :)

Enthusiasm is sadly none too common.

Good luck, Hobbs.

Tis ok mang, you're allowed to be excited :)

I think I've gotten that exact same ad on a... church website.

And good luck hobbs!
Thanks everyone!

I am probably competing against every Aero major in the country + Crezth, so I honestly don't have much of a shot. My GPA is middling and I don't have design team experience.

In my favor, I have a mentor at Boeing who can call up the hiring manager on my behalf and I have lots of leadership experience. Oh and coincidentally, on the listing, they stated that they prefer a candidate with knowledge of NASA funded programs. Not only do I have that, but on the 'interests' section of my Boeing resume I have a NASA design study from the 70's listed as something I read for fun + references to all of the Boeing/NASA projects. And that was on my resume before this job posted.

All in all, I give myself 1 in 20 odds to get a call back. If I do, my odds rise dramatically because I may suck at math but apparently I am a great interviewer. Despite my low odds, I am still excited to the point that I couldn't fall asleep last night.

The good news is that snow and sleet have caused school to be called off.

The bad news is that I'm trapped here for a day, and I'm not sure what to do. I have a six-hour Polish war movie that I've never seen, and I've been waiting for a day like this to watch it, but...

The good news is that I have a friend here who I might be able to hang out with, and there's a girl I'd like to get to know better.

The bad news is that said friend is normally busy, and I may have a hard time finding said girl.
