I think Smash Mouth made the mistake of achieving crossover success as a borderline-novelty act, which gave them limited staying power on the mainstream charts, while rending them toxic on the alternative charts. For rock bands, success is either found in a steady cult following outside the mainstream or a blandly stable niche within it, and Smash Mouth fell into the unexpected chasm between the two.

So too mainstream to be popular with the edgy crowd and not mainstream enough to be popular with the pop-culture crowd?

I've been offered a kitten. The building manager called me to update the part of my lease pertaining to pets, and asked if I plan to get another cat (I'm allowed two). Seems the fact that I paid the pet deposits for 2 cats didn't make it from one set of paperwork to another. It doesn't matter which individual cat I have, as long as the number of cats doesn't exceed the number I've paid for. So when I went to straighten this out, she asked if I wanted another cat.

I said I'd been thinking about it, and had been looking at the Kijiji ads. So far none of them (at least none of the local ones) screamed out "Adopt me, I'd be perfect!" so I've held off. It's a bit iffy dealing with large sites like that one, since there have been some scammers selling fake sphynx kittens and others dealing in kitten mill kittens - some of the kittens turn out to be very unhealthy.

So the manager's got a friend who has a cat who had kittens 2 weeks ago - black and white/black and grey/all black. I said "maybe" and she said I have a month to think it over and decide if I want a boy or girl.

Girls are more expensive (no jokes, please; this has to do with the anatomy of spaying female cats; females are more difficult to operate on than males so the vets charge more), but males sometimes spray even if you do get them neutered in time. I'm not sure how Maddy would react - would she see a male as an aggressor, or would she see a female as competition? Or would everything work out and her maternal instincts kick in and they'd eventually become friends as she and Chloe did? A huge part of the problem is that Maddy is nearly 10 years old (her birthday is a month from now) and that's a huge gap. The age gap shouldn't be more than 3 years, but then again, I did have two cats whose birthdays were almost 10 years apart to the day - and they got along fine.

And this place isn't remotely kitten-proof... it's been years since I had to worry about kittens chewing electrical cords, getting trapped in weird places, and so on.

At this point I'm not sure if I'm trying to talk myself into this or out of it.

Which decision would you regret not taking in five years?

Alternatively, roll a die to determine which action you will take. If your gut reaction is then relief you got that result or you start justifying re-rolling to get the other result, you know which one you prefer.

That's an excellent question, and I'm going to seriously consider that aspect.

Thank you for the insight. :)

This is too important a decision to leave to something like that. Adopting a cat means at least a 15-year commitment (only one of my cats has ever lived longer than 15 years). Sometimes it takes awhile to decide. My current cat and the previous one were Freecycle adoptions - they needed a home because something wasn't working out with their first family (in Chloe's case, she and the dog didn't get along and the dog had priority; in Maddy's case, a family member was allergic to cats and they didn't know before they got her). In both cases the timing was exactly right, and something just told me, "this is the right thing to do."

I was looking at the Kijiji ads tonight, and there's a male tuxedo kitten, about 5 months old, being rehomed due to allergies. In a case like that and some others, it makes me wonder if it's really an allergy or if the person suddenly realized they have a largeish vet bill coming up (for spaying/neutering).

Vet bills are something I'm going to have to consider carefully. If I do get this kitten, she (I'm pretty sure I'd want another girl) doesn't get in this door until she has her shots and a checkup. There's $100 right off the bat, more if there's a problem (Maddy needed medication for ear mites). Then five months later it's another $150-$200 for the spaying. Add to that an extra litter box, more cat litter, a new collar (I've already got plenty of food and cat dishes), food suitable for a kitten up to 6 months old, hopefully this one will use a scratching post instead of the furniture or me...

Yeah, I'm already halfway talked into it. Probably. But this time I'm trying not to let myself be dazzled by a cute face. I told Maddy, "It's too bad you can't look at these ads and give me your opinion."

Some of my cats have found me, and I couldn't say no. One just marched right into the house, glanced around, and gave my grandmother a look that was basically, "Looks fine. I'll take it." That was Maggie, who went on to have kittens under the back porch (she was pregnant when she moved in), and ten months later one of those kittens had kittens... (we did get everyone fixed eventually).

I would say they were neither fire nor ice, but something in between. Lukewarm water, so to speak.

Do any of you do anything special for ascension day?

I had to look this up because I thought this would be some weird Daniel Jackson business for the crazies. :mischief:

I've never heard of anyone celebrating it here in BC or back in Ontario. I'm going to hazard a guess that it's at best an extremely niche event for the devout in Canada.

So what do you lot do in Snoreway?

Public holiday.
Women and sane men bank it as a free holiday and care like they would about Columbus Day (were they American).

For the rest Ascension doubles as Father's Day.

The Spit Take has it explained rather well:
Spoiler :

Scandinavians don't do this?

In East Germany, Ascencion day is a beast of its very own. It is celebrated as "Men's day" and the tradition is to get together with a lot of other men early in the morning, roam through the streets on foot and drink beer all-through day. You may also want to dress like an idiot and carry a walking stick with a little bell attached to it, as well as pulling a card carrying all the beer you will drink through-out the day.
I actually thought this was a general German thing until I moved to West Germany and realized - no one there does it. Was quit strange.
Alternatively, specifically more seasoned men my simply do some kind tour together. My father goes on a boat tour. Others do bicycle tours or go hiking.

edit: Oh I see the video from Metatron covers that.

In western Lower Saxony it's generally done. I wasn't aware there are places where it doesn't happen at all. Maybe some catholic regions don't do it (?).
But it's certainly bigger in the east than here.
Like, here it's a minor holiday in the calender of obligatory drinking.

(If you have never experienced May Day in the north west countryside, think twice before you do. You can't unsee stuff.
It's basically the apocalypse.)
