Random Thoughts 2: Arbitrary Speculations

After having watched Boogie2988 on the H3 Podcast, I am surprised with how much conviction he was able to give his opinions. That part about Anita Sarkeesian in particular really surprised me. I guess his weight loss really has some positive effects on his feeling of self-worth.

His username clearly signposts Nazi sympathies though.

How dare this fat dude claim that there are human rights issues which don't just involve women or non-whites. Scum got what he deserved.

It's funny, because Boogie and Sarkeesian don't really disagree on this issue that much. Sarkeesian does not claim that White Men do not get harassment, she claims that white men do not "get harassment because they're white men", but acknowledges that a "white man" can still get harassed because of other issues, such as, in Boogie's case, being obese. Boogie still states that women and people of color get more harassment in his opinion, and he's probably right about that.

So really, the only disagreement here is whether being white is _never_ a reason to get harassment as Sarkeesian thinks, or just much less often as Boogie thinks. (And Sarkeesian is wrong of course, being white can clearly be a reason to get harassed.) But that's not even what Sarkeesian focuses on, instead, she gets angry because in her mind, he takes away attention from women and people of color, which is such a combative attitude.

Yeah, you'd need to get two subscriptions. Bad move on their part.
I suspect they will lose a lot of potential business over this. I would buy the pass if I could share it. They are going for double revenue from people like me but instead will get none.

Hey, I think I've got a killer chant for the protests of Trump's immigration policy: "LINK THEM UP" (the families)

A play on "lock her up," of course, but a positive message instead.

And by having such a chant, one would have a way of keeping the issue in the spotlight for the whole (probably long) stretch of time it will take for Trump to put this right.

China won, so you might like this for another occasion:
2SA! 2SA! 2SA!

While reminiscing about The Empire Strikes Back, the thought's struck me that they were really ahead of their time. Was it the first use of UACVs in Western cinema or was there anything even earlier?

That's very cringy.

I'm sure Dave Rubin will soon have him on his show and the other usual suspects will defend his right to free speech.

Soldiers don't have a right to free speech. Not when it comes to political statements. While in uniform, members of the armed forces are strictly prohibited from making public political statements or showing support/disapproval for any political party, candidate, or elected official.

UCMJ and DoD regulations are very clear about this, so it's pretty hard for me to feel any sympathy for this idiot. I also must admit that I take joy in the fact that since he did not live out his commitment to the military, he will have to repay the government for the cost of his education at the academy. And since it's government debt, filing bankruptcy won't allow him to get rid of it. So I hope making his little political statement was worth getting discharged under less than honorable circumstances and getting ruined financially for the rest of his life. Especially since due to the nature of his discharge, he's destined for a life of minimum wage dead-end jobs with up to 25% of his paycheck being garnished to pay back what he owes Uncle Sam.

The sad thing is, this fool strikes me as the kind of person that won't see that the horrible, impoverished life he is destined for is the result of his own actions. Nope, he'll probably walk around the rest of his life believing he did nothing wrong and that the government screwed him over and is "oppressing" him.

So, chant for indefinite detention of families together? No thanks

Every time I think we've reached ~~ P E A K L I B E R A L I S M ~~, they surprise me.

I was with you until you began relishing this guy's bad fortune. What he did was stupid as hell but it doesn't in my opinion equate with the kind of self-destructive behavior that rightfully deserves scorn.

You have to think like a soldier to understand why I take joy in his fate. He was acting out of selfishness (ironic for a communist btw), and selfishness can endanger the soldiers in the unit and disrupt unit cohesion, which reduces readiness. If this...person had actually been allowed to lead soldiers into combat, I have no doubt in my mind he would have gotten some or all of his men killed. I can tell from how he conducted himself during this incident that he has all the worst personality traits for a soldier to have, let alone someone who is expected to lead soldiers. Makes me question why a selfish individual like him would even join the military in the first place. Makes me think his motivations were selfish as well.

And as someone who wore the uniform and lived that life because I genuinely wanted to serve my country, seeing this guy show utter contempt and disrespect for it makes me want to pound his face in if you'll allow me to be completely honest. So yeah, for me, it's nice to see the Army drop the hammer on him.

suffering and lifelong misfortune.

It's not misfortune if it's self-inflicted. He has no one to blame for his current circumstances but himself.

Well... not a ringing endorsement of the armed forces, if I do say so myself.

Because you don't understand the culture. People who have never served recognize that military life is different, but you don't really understand how different. The problem with this guy is he acted like an individual, and acting like an individual is a mortal sin in the military, especially in combat units. And that's because individuals and those who want to "do their own thing" get people killed.

Which let's take a moment to reflect on the irony of this whole situation: A supposed hardcore communist got kicked out of probably the most communist-like organization in our society because he wasn't acting like a communist. All he had to do was put his individualism aside and act in accordance with Army regulations and he would have been fine.

Iceland is doing much better against Croatia than I expected. Started off weak, but got some really dangerous counter attacks.

Random side tangent to this. This reminds me how in certain MOBAs, I'm thinking of Heroes of the Storm in particular, where the mantra is "It's better to do the wrong thing with the team than the right thing by yourself". If the right thing is to do the map objective but your team wants to push lanes, then darn it you better push lanes too. Going off by yourself is just asking to be ganked and then you accomplish nothing.
