I think it may also have to do with how the air is displaced. It also could be that the bolt is hitting the ground and sending shock waves through it.

Thunder is a mechanical disturbance. It's the same reason a subwoofer makes things in your room shake when it's loud.
Actually, thunder is when lightning sends shockwaves through the air, not the ground.

Well the lightning and thunder both seemed to happen at the same time so it must have been very close. Also I heard a giant crash just about a minute later which might have been a tree or a power pole (though no outages that I've heard of) although the rattling was before that. It was very intense and kind of scary.

My computer chair was feeling a little weird so I told my mom and asked her to please find the warranty. Instead she tried to "fix" it, in ways that I believe voided the warranty (there was a sticker). And now it feels very unstable. What can I do?
You can either remove all traces of your Mum's messing around and generally undo her fixing and then use the warrantry, or you can try fixing it yourself, or you can ask someone else to fix it, or you can get something else to sit on.

Important question, almost worth a thread by it's own... Is coffee-breath really that bad? Does it warrant some sort of rinse before getting too close to someone?

Seems like it depends on the coffee; cheap coffee gives horrible coffee breath, good coffee doesn't.
