The sad state of Education

If IQ tests included geography... I would say the world average would drop to be about 60. :shake:

Nyeh.

I'd actually say it's lack of enthusiasm by the students. They don't care. They'd much rather be sitting at home playing video games or something than learning. It's true. They don't understand how important an education is. There are good students who are smart, but some of them are terribly stupid.

Eg. in health class the other day we made poster boards (since it's a non-gt class, we have to dumb it down to certain people's highest effort) about certian things, in which half of hte people made bad common misspellings. The one that sticks out in my mind is-
  • Boys get there hair on there face
How can people be ignorant in the 7th grade for god's sakes to not know that? It's not only geography, but math, english, history, reading, writing... I weep for hte future.

I wonder how the US is going to be like in the future... The current young people being so stupid... I shudder to think how the leadership would be like.

Well there still are all around the country very competant people. Unlike school elections or prom votings or something, the governmental offices (except for the recent California governer elections) are not popularity contests. There are a lot of very competant people in this country. There are just a lot of idiots. I'm more concerned on how impudent the common folk can be, the ones we trust with running small businesses, production, ect.

There'd better be lots of competant people.

Because the idiots outnumber the competant people at my school at least 3:1.

I have a feeling that there's this prejudice that Americans suck at geography - how true it is I can't say, because I don't live in the US, and Jay Leno's "Jaywalking" and regular "Americans is stoopid" remarks on forums as well as other places is the only link of info I have, a link that's quite a bit biased.

I don't tend to agree to prejudices right away, I was however baffled by the fact that American high school students in Boston called the language of an exchange student from Denmark "Denmarkian", when it so obviously is "Danish".

Well there are people who get a lot smarter as school goes on. School becomes stricter, more demanding, and more interesting as it goes on.

I'm in High school. People here seem to get dumber, not smarter as time goes on.

Although poor schools and teachers certainly share the blame, you could have the best teachers and facilities in the world but if kids don't spend time actually trying to learn, do homework, etc. then it's all moot. Honestly (and not to make people cringe) I think it starts at home. If parents get on their kids butt and make sure they are doing their work, etc. etc. and not just buying them playstations and cell phones and CD's then even at the worst school they'll learn something or at least figure out enough to go to another source like the library or even Wikipedia.

If I was being cynical I'd say that education standards in every democracy are falling.
Maybe it's because our education system is not capitolistic.

Just wait until you see how many dumb people make it into college.

I don't think we have anything to worry about. The common populace has always been backwards and stupid. If you look at the original Constitution of the United States, only educated, white, land owners could vote. This was because they knew most English-now-Americans were stupid boobs.

My HONORS History teacher on the first day of school made us draw a map of the world, and most of the students drew continents as rectangles and circles. They did get the continent positions right, however…

Okay, when you say

"We should've gone to the store", I know it sounds like "We should of gone to the store"

But it's not.

It's a contraction of "We should HAVE gone to the store".

Cripes. That grammar error drives me nuts.

Stuff like that used to drive me insane. English is my third language, so when I see a native English speaker make common mistakes.. not just once, but multiple times.. my respect for him/her goes doooown.

Yes, American grammar and spelling mistakes have overtaken too much of America. I am currently trying to purge my vocabulary of slurrings of words, mispronunciations, and wretched grammar. It's not helping much though

So... now that you are depressed about humanity and our survival as a species. I was wondering, is this just an American phenomena, or does it happen across the globe where it seems people are more interested in who won American Idol than actually completing a report on time. What can be done to change this, within reason?
At least it isn't a CNN map. But, I was depressed over it in 2003 when, in my senior year of high school, I was the only one that could name all 50 states as well as draw them in the right places on a map. There I was still recovering from some nasty injuries and I was able to do that.

I remember a French Nobelist recalling in a book (translated title: Debunked!) how undergraduate physics students at a French university believed that ESP abilities were scientific verified, whereas time dilation was not.

Granted, I can't recall the exact numbers, and they are just undergrads, but still...

Don't forget "their," "there," and "they're". :cringe:
