Okay cool, thanks for the insights! For now I'm going to watch the 4 tie-in movies and go from there. Sounds like I should watch the Captain America movies next maybe, if I still have an interest after I finish the Avengers?

Which of the spin-offs are viewed in especially high regard (whether by critics or the fanbase)? To give you an idea as to what sort of thing appeals to me.. I quite liked Guardians of the Galaxy VOl. 1 but hated the first 20 minutes of the sequel. I quite liked Deadpool as well, and I remember liking Iron Man a bit from what I remember.
If you liked Guardians and Deadpool, you'll probably be looking for more comedies after the Avengers movies, which take themselves terribly seriously. Try Spider-Man: Homecoming and/or Ant-Man for something more lighthearted.

EDIT: Ack. I forgot Thor: Ragnarok. I'd recommend that one ahead of Spider-Man and Ant-Man. It's technically the third Thor movie, but it's a "soft reboot" of the character, so there's no need to see the first two.

I also really like Captain America: The Winter Soldier, but that's another one that doesn't have much of a sense of humor. It is a team-up movie, if that's your jam; it's not just Captain America by himself.

What do you mean by soft reboot exactly? The previous movies don't matter, the same way that the previous Spiderman movies don't matter? Or is it only parts of the movie that's no longer canon?

See, I am sort of watching these movies for the action... but most superhero movies never appealed to me. One exception - I liked The Dark Knight quite a bit, but usually dislike Batman movies. Dark Knight was just well done as a movie, I thought, but the rest of them just bore me. They're too goofy and I can't take them seriously. So it might seem odd I liked those two comedies in particular, but the writing just spoke to me. As did the characters. And that's what I usually look for in a story - a well written and put together plot, good dialogue, and well fleshed out characters. Doesn't matter if it's a sci-fi novel I'm reading, a soft sci-fi superhero comedy, a serious movie about wolves mating, or what have you. I am looking for artfully told stories, essentially - everything else is secondary to that objective.

So it's not really that I specifically prefer comedy superhero movies over more standard fare, it's more that those 2 comedies in particular just lined up very well for me. The Avengers movie was pretty good too, I enjoyed it, even though I know little about the background of all these characters. You can sort of deduce some of that with what's said on screen.

What's funny is that I watched scenes from this movie in Vietnam! The whole big battle in Manhattan part. I was sitting in a restaurant half looking at the TV, half at my phone. I thought they were actually showing the latest Avengers movie lol, that's how much I know about these movies. I was like "Nice, I am seeing scenes from a movie that just came out!" while I continued eating my pho. Turns out nope, i just don't know anything about superheroes.

But yeah, Avengers was a good movie, I'm going to watch the sequel tonight. I see what you mean when you say that these movies take themselves seriously, but it didn't really bug me in the first one. It seemed like a decent level of seriousness, given the plot and what was unfolding.

I had one question. That time crystal thing that the plot revolves around.. They don't really explain where it came from, it was just there and then it got stolen. I might have missed some dialogue that explains it, I'm not sure. I also don't want to google it and read spoilers from the other movies. Is there one movie in particular that deals with where this time crystal came from?

For the sake of everyone else's sanity, I'm whisking this conversation over to Superheroes!

Ok I'll start ruminating on a Vietnam thread! But not sure when I'll start posting, probably at some point in december.

New Question:

I watched the Avengers movie the other day (sucked it up and got disney+). I do not watch superhero movies so I haven't seen any of the other movies in the marvel universe or whatever, except possibly Iron Man 1 & 2. And the one with Star Lord (the first one, the second one was so bad I had to stop watching). Either way, I can't remember anything from Iron Man and Star Lord seems somewhat unrelated for now.

I figured I would watch the Avengers movies first. There's 4 of them it seems, and they seem to possibly tie all the other movies together, so it seems like a good way to get into this whole thing. I do not want to "start at the beginning" because I don't have an interest to watch all these movies really. But maybe? So I'll watch the avengers movies first and then go back and watch the movies about the characters who appeal to me. I'll probably re-watch Iron Man, because he has a sense of humour that appeals to me. And I vaguely remember the movie (or movies?) I watched about him being pretty good.

My question revolves around Captain Marvel. I was looking through the "chronological watching order" for these movies, and it seems that each Avengers character gets a movie set in time at some point before The Avengers is set. So.. Thor, Captain America, uhm who is there, Green angry dude, and iron man. But.. There is a Captain Marvel movie on the list too, but I do not remember seeing her in the Avengers movie. Is she like a secret Avenger that joins the gang later or something? Is this wrapped up in spoilers - i.e. should I stop asking questions and just watch the rest of the Avengers movies and this question will be answered in due time? If so, plz don't answer this question and just tell me to watch. But if this is not explained in the Avengers movie then I'd like to know, as it will probably impact what movies I end up watching later.

For full context - I know almost nothing about Marvel, this universe, the characters, etc. although I have seen some of the old spiderman movies and I know some of these characters since they're so popular (everybody knows about Iron Man, etc.). So you can assume I am a complete n00b when it comes to this stuff and treat it as such.\

Follow-up questions: Are they planning any more Avengers movies or are these 4 movies it? And please stay away from spoilers thx!

One thing about the Marvel movies is that the success of the early ones inspired them to get ambitious. So they start with a few very well known characters, and plots that have some relationship to one another, but not that much. And they have this vast library of Marvel comics to draw on to inspire stories. Now if the early individual movies hadn't done so well, then that's that. But they did do well. Extremely well. So they got ambitious, and decided to tie everything together. This leaves some gaps, and some holes that needed to be filled. Capt Marvel was a hole that needed to be filled. Which is why she wasn't in the early ones, but was added later. Spiderman was also a hole to be filled. But there were legal obstacles (long story) why that had to wait.

The basic architecture for Infinity Wars was written in comics long years before anyone even imagined the movies. Tieing it all together was an imperfect thing.

I liked The Dark Knight quite a bit, but usually dislike Batman movies.
For some reason I'm reminded of First Knight. It's an Arthurian movie that has Arthur, Guinevere, and Lancelot (Sean Connery, Julia Ormond, Richard Gere), but guess who isn't in it?

There's no Merlin, no Morgan, and no Mordred (the villain's name does begin with "M" - Sir Malagant).

There's no magic at all. And I love it. It's just a nice adventure/romance story that includes a bit of a character study of Lancelot.

Aside from Camelot (the musical; I worked on a production of that) and The Mists of Avalon (probably Marion Zimmer Bradley's best-known non-Darkover novel), I'm not really into Arthurian stuff. But this movie did everything right.

I am in dire need of some chemical to combat the limescale in my bathroom. I need something strong, something like an atomic bomb would be nice :D Commercial limescale removal chemicals doesn't seem to work. Please help .

I just wait until the limescale is so built up it becomes a structural element in the bathroom.

Hammer and chisel? ;)

or maybe your own calluses

Muriatic acid but be careful, dangerous stuff

I've already experimented with a mixture of salt and baking soda , works like a charm on metalic surfaces but not as well on the ceramic and tiles. I think I really do need acid for ceramic elements.

All the above precautions.... also, do you have metal or plastic pipes/fittings, cuz the acid can mess up the metal

I have mostly plastic pipes, shower fittings are plastic while the rest of the armature is metal , thanks for the warning ! ;)

Just be careful for god's sakes!!!

I wouldn't use acid on ceramic, either.

Relax ;) I'm gonna use just the citric acid first to see if it's enough , not gonna go for the heavy artillery until I absolutely have too ;)

Citric acid? Just admit that you're going for the screwdriver and I don't mean the tool.

btw I'm boiling cabbage yet again: why not use a bit of vinegar?

Well boiled water with Vinegar smells bad (tried it once and decided to never again ;) ) "screwdriving" the lime sure sounds tempting but if I am really angry I'm gonna use an electric drill with a sandpaper attachment :D
