Skullbones, I don't know if you want to make a unit_32 icon, but it's pretty simple. This is what I do. Open up my 3D model in Rhinoceros. Use the SE view. Delete the surface, on which the unit and shadow sit. Render the image. Import that using PaintShop Pro. Crop with a one pixel, magenta border around the unit. Use increase canvas size to make the image square. For example, if the dimensions were x:75 by y: 56, make the canvas size x:75 by y:75. Keep the unit centered when enlarging the canvas. Then, reduce the image size to x:32 by y:32.
Well, that's what I do anyway. It's a process, but it's not hard.

or increase color depth in PSP to "true" color (1.6 million I think), and then select image => resize => (BY PIXEL) 32x32.
load units32 palette, and replace all blue with corresponding shades of red.
Another trick I just figured out is to run the unit in Flicster, color palette 1 (red), screen capture, resize, load units32 palette (if you dont have it saved as a palette it is a very nice tool to have), and then replace the light grey with magenta
