I feel like this is the real discussion people are trying to have in the RD thread, and we keep dancing around it, so I figured we could have that here. What are the actual values that we think are important for a successful OT forum? Have those changed over the years? Do we have needs that aren't being met?

I'm going to make a multiple choice poll in a second.

In addition, I come here for the community.

I come here because now I'll never have to find a hotel in Chicago, London or DC again.

The community here is, generally and on the whole, reasonably intelligent which makes the discussion of politics/economics/religion enjoyable. The interspersed witty one-liners help. The community is large enough that things don't get stale, or at least get stale less rapidly.

I want: reasonably intelligent conversation punctuated by witty one-liners and inane threads. Maybe a 70/30 split. :)

I'm going to copypasta a just slightly modified version of what I said on a related subject elsewhere:

OK. To start off with, why are we here? Why are we posting on an internet forum instead of some other activity?

Human contact

Social interaction

To learn something

Interesting conversation

To meet interesting and different people

When you get down to it, when you ask, "why are we here?" you get something different from "teh interwebs is srisbzzness".

We are here, ultimately, to entertain ourselves.

So why CFC? Specifically, why CFC OT? Well, the Civilization series brings in a lot of people. And CFC, because of the size of it and the longevity of it means that there are simply more people available to find OT and the Colosseum and discuss all sorts of things. Some interesting, some inane, most only interesting to a subset of the people wandering around looking for something to do.

What makes a good discussion is good people to have a discussion with.

It does not need to be at the level of philosophical debate. It does not need the formality of said debate. And doesn't need the rules of one.

There are very good, informative, posters who write very well. And there are other equally good posters who use a lot of shorthand and quips. Most of the people who express a good point do not necessarily make it in a really well presented way. Does that make it bad points?

No. We are not being graded on style. We are having a casual conversation for the pleasure and the entertainment of having a conversation. Sometimes we are trying to educate others. Or learn something. But this is not the University of CFC. And it will not be issuing diplomas.

I don't expect a lot of people to agree with me. Though I'm only human and more often than not the people that I'm somewhat in agreement with I find more congenial than those who I entirely disagree with.

It's harder to find friendships and respect with people who you are badly in disagreement with on issues you find important. That doesn't mean it never happens. But when people are far apart, the sniping comes easier than finding common ground.

The problem here is not that people see the world differently, but that they are seeing 2 worlds that cannot be reconciled with one another. And keeping the vitriol, the trolling and the flaming, out of that is really an awful lot of what the moderators are exhausting themselves with. But it's a losing battle.

I don't necessarily want people who agree with me, even though they are usually easier to get along with. I have long thought that if it were just the handful of the least civil posters that were gone, then there would be more civil posts by more members. And then there would be more room for diversity of opinion without quite so much of the rancor.

Rather than crack down on everyone, just crack down on the worst. Rather than crack down on silliness, crack down on meanness. Rather than crack down on disagreements, crack down on bad faith.

What makes a good post is that it makes people think instead of making them mad. What makes a good post is that it entertains instead of annoys.

That's what I want out of OT. Get rid of the worst, and let the rest of us have some fun, interesting, informative, conversations.

Some of the options in the poll are interestingly framed. I don't want an enlightened debating society, but I do want reasonable quality discussion. I don't come here for a highly structured environment, but I do come here because 'I want an environment to discuss religion, politics, etc'. What does highly structured mean? If it allows for that environment, then sure I want it. But it's not the highly structured-ness that I'd be coming here for. I'm here for all the options to some extent (perhaps sans relationship threads), so having an outlet for each of them is a good thing.

I like all of the options in the poll. Basically, I come to OT for the community and for the fact that the threads are usually very wide-ranging in topic yet still interesting and entertaining (due to the community).

I'm only in it for the postcount.

Actually, I'm here mostly to be entertained by silly antics, and participate in light debate.

But still, mostly postcount.

I'm here because of the community, because this community is amazing. People here are intelligent (the ones who aren't are usually weeded out by the great moderation), and foster great discussions and debates, without sacrificing the fun factor as most forums would. I like to come here to equally see people's wide opinions on current events as well as Random Rants antics and so forth.

It's just a great place full of great people.

Lighthearted one liners or puns, jokey small talk, and nothing really. That's what makes OT OT.

Several of the poll options as voted are reasonable; one thing missing I'd want is Science and Tech and Arts and Entertainment merged back into one general OT. (And I wouldn't mind Sports too, except that subforum does decently well on its own) So-called "serious" politics/religion and all the proposed changes that go with that are probably the least interesting or important things I want to see here.

Considering we are on a gaming website I would not want OT to be to serious since we are not all experts so we should basically be having fun on this forum. Sure we can talk heavy things but we should not get too worked over things.

Human contact and some debating/learning interesting stuff.

This. If I want to talk with an idiot, I'll go outside. God knows there's plenty around.

EDIT: Also, the ability to just say 'this'. I do not, during the course of my normal day, encounter people who can articulate what I'm thinking as well as I can (if not sometimes better). It's intangible, but it's something I've always liked about this place.

True, but I do enjoy, for example, the resident lawyers, economists, etc. giving there take on things. I think it contributes to my well-roundedness.

The way it was long ago, before any thread you opened had to have a serious discussion about something (ice cream discussions!!!!) or before you had to get permission for certain threads. Before arts and science were separated for no reason. Stolen pants, radioactive monkeys, relationships advices. Fiftychat mafia, philosophical ramblings, SRS BZNS threads, conspiracy nuts, religious nuts, naive liberal ghandi children nuts, hazelnuts, indian cashew, all kinds of nuts. Before the overbearing autocensor rules (there was nothing wrong with asterisks!).

All we habe nau is SRS BZNS.

I like the variety of discussion, and can often have intelligent discussions with people of opposing viewpoints.

Unlike RL, where I either am a socialist America hater(wrt my Dad), or a heartless conservative(wrt my Brother).

OT completes the Holy Trinity with Imperium Offtopicum/Forum Games and Stories & Tales.

Everything that comes with normal human conversation, except with people that don't live anywhere near me.
