What is poetry?

I have only been inspired to write one poem:

72 hours of Unreality

It was weird as walk into what would become my new school
People were confused and scared
People were angry
They said we were at war

It was weird exploring the land of the mouse
The happy park was not quite right
People were subdued
They said we were at war

It was weird driving home
Not a line in the sky not a glint or gleam nor even a roar
They said we were at war

Suddenly a glint in the sky above the bayou city
Fast a nimble it was on combat air patrol
For we were at war

For we were at war
 
Poetry is art. When you shun belief in the supernatural and faith in science, poetry and art are all that is left. It becomes the alpha and omega of existence.
 
I´m currently in the process of reading Joyce Carol Oates´ Tenderness and may quote from it later.
 
Read Dover Beach last week and it really resonated with me. BTW, my last comment was a reference to Stanzas from the Grand Chartreuse which is another Arnold poem.
 
I'm amazed at the lack of Kipling. Probably my favorite poet, a lot of these could have been written yesterday for their modern relevance, and they all sound great when read aloud. I apologise in advance for the military emphasis of these - Kipling, although he was rejected from the army, was very fond of it and managed to secure his son a commission in the Irish Guards despite his being 17 - but I think most of them should strike a chord with everybody.

The Road to Mandalay

Note: Mandlay does not rhyme with 'sky', as I heard it once read: it rhymes with 'day'.

Where the silence 'ung that 'eavy you was 'arf afraid to speak!

But that's all shove be'ind me -- long ago an' fur away,
An' there ain't no 'busses runnin' from the Bank to Mandalay;
An' I'm learnin' 'ere in London what the ten-year soldier tells:
"If you've 'eard the East a-callin', you won't never 'eed naught else."
No! you won't 'eed nothin' else
But them spicy garlic smells,
An' the sunshine an' the palm-trees an' the tinkly temple-bells;
On the road to Mandalay . . .

I am sick o' wastin' leather on these gritty pavin'-stones,
An' the blasted Henglish drizzle wakes the fever in my bones;
Tho' I walks with fifty 'ousemaids outer Chelsea to the Strand,
An' they talks a lot o' lovin', but wot do they understand?
Beefy face an' grubby 'and --
Law! wot do they understand?
I've a neater, sweeter maiden in a cleaner, greener land!

Ship me somewheres east of Suez, where the best is like the worst,
Where there aren't no Ten Commandments an' a man can raise a thirst;

Note for foreigners: Tommy Atkins is the generic name for the British soldier

The 'Eathen

'E calls it bloomin' nonsense -- 'e doesn't know no more --
An' then up comes 'is Company an' kicks 'im round the floor!

The young recruit is 'ammered -- 'e takes it very 'ard;
'E 'angs 'is 'ead an' mutters -- 'e sulks about the yard;
'E talks o' "cruel tyrants" 'e'll swing for by-an'-by,
An' the others 'ears an' mocks 'im, an' the boy goes orf to cry.

The young recruit is silly -- 'e thinks o' suicide;
'E's lost 'is gutter-devil; 'e 'asn't got 'is pride;
But day by day they kicks 'im, which 'elps 'im on a bit,
Till 'e finds 'isself one mornin' with a full an' proper kit.

Gettin' clear o' dirtiness, gettin' done with mess,
Gettin' shut o' doin' things rather-more-or-less;
Not so fond of abby-nay, kul, nor hazar-ho,
Learns to keep 'is rifle an' 'isself jus' so!

The young recruit is 'appy -- 'e throws a chest to suit;
You see 'im grow mustaches; you 'ear 'im slap 'is boot;
'E learns to drop the "bloodies" from every word 'e slings,
An' 'e shows an 'ealthy brisket when 'e strips for bars an' rings.

The cruel-tyrant-sergeants they watch 'im 'arf a year;
They watch 'im with 'is comrades, they watch 'im with 'is beer;
They watch 'im with the women at the regimental dance,
And the cruel-tyrant-sergeants send 'is name along for "Lance".

An' now 'e's 'arf o' nothin', an' all a private yet,
'Is room they up an' rags 'im to see what they will get;
They rags 'im low an' cunnin', each dirty trick they can,
But 'e learns to sweat 'is temper an' 'e learns to sweat 'is man.

An', last, a Colour-Sergeant, as such to be obeyed,
'E schools 'is men at cricket, 'e tells 'em on parade;
They sees 'em quick an' 'andy, uncommon set an' smart,
An' so 'e talks to orficers which 'ave the Core at 'eart.

'E learns to do 'is watchin' without it showin' plain;
'E learns to save a dummy, an' shove 'im straight again;
'E learns to check a ranker that's buyin' leave to shirk;
An' 'e learns to make men like 'im so they'll learn to like their work.

An' when it comes to marchin' he'll see their socks are right,
An' when it comes to action 'e shows 'em 'ow to sight;
'E knows their ways of thinkin' and just what's in their mind;
'E knows when they are takin' on an' when they've fell be'ind.

'E knows each talkin' corpril that leads a squad astray;
'E feels 'is innards 'eavin', 'is bowels givin' way;
'E sees the blue-white faces all tryin' 'ard to grin,
An' 'e stands an' waits an' suffers till it's time to cap 'em in.

An' now the hugly bullets come peckin' through the dust,
An' no one wants to face 'em, but every beggar must;
So, like a man in irons which isn't glad to go,
They moves 'em off by companies uncommon stiff an' slow.

Of all 'is five years' schoolin' they don't remember much
Excep' the not retreatin', the step an' keepin' touch.
It looks like teachin' wasted when they duck an' spread an' 'op,
But if 'e 'adn't learned 'em they'd be all about the shop!

An' now it's "'Oo goes backward?" an' now it's "'Oo comes on?"
And now it's "Get the doolies," an' now the captain's gone;
An' now it's bloody murder, but all the while they 'ear
'Is voice, the same as barrick drill, a-shepherdin' the rear.

'E's just as sick as they are, 'is 'eart is like to split,
But 'e works 'em, works 'em, works 'em till he feels 'em take the bit;
The rest is 'oldin' steady till the watchful bugles play,
An' 'e lifts 'em, lifts 'em, lifts 'em through the charge that wins the day!

But the backbone of the Army is the non-commissioned man!

The Young British Soldier

So I'll meet 'im later on
At the place where 'e is gone --
Where it's always double drill and no canteen;
'E'll be squattin' on the coals
Givin' drink to poor damned souls,
An' I'll get a swig in hell from Gunga Din!
Yes, Din! Din! Din!
You Lazarushian-leather Gunga Din!
Though I've belted you and flayed you,

The Last of the Light Brigade

There were thirty million English who talked of England's might,
There were twenty broken troopers who lacked a bed for the night.
They had neither food nor money, they had neither service nor trade;
They were only shiftless soldiers, the last of the Light Brigade.

They felt that life was fleeting; they knew not that art was long,
That though they were dying of famine, they lived in deathless song.
They asked for a little money to keep the wolf from the door;
And the thirty million English sent twenty pounds and four !

They laid their heads together that were scarred and lined and grey;
Keen were the Russian sabres, but want was keener than they;
And an old Troop-Sergeant muttered, "Let us go to the man who writes
The things on Balaclava the kiddies at school recites."

They went without bands or colours, a regiment ten-file strong,
To look for the Master-singer who had crowned them all in his song;
And, waiting his servant's order, by the garden gate they stayed,
A desolate little cluster, the last of the Light Brigade.

They strove to stand to attention, to straighen the toil-bowed back;
They drilled on an empty stomach, the loose-knit files fell slack;
With stooping of weary shoulders, in garments tattered and frayed,
They shambled into his presence, the last of the Light Brigade.

The old Troop-Sergeant was spokesman, and "Beggin' your pardon," he said,
"You wrote o' the Light Brigade, sir. Here's all that isn't dead.
An' it's all come true what you wrote, sir, regardin' the mouth of hell;
For we're all of us nigh to the workhouse, an' we thought we'd call an' tell.

"No, thank you, we don't want food, sir; but couldn't you take an' write
A sort of 'to be continued' and 'see next page' o' the fight?
We think that someone has blundered, an' couldn't you tell 'em how?
You wrote we were heroes once, sir. Please, write we are starving now."

The poor little army departed, limping and lean and forlorn.
And the heart of the Master-singer grew hot with "the scorn of scorn."
And he wrote for them wonderful verses that swept the land like flame,
Till the fatted souls of the English were scourged with the thing called Shame.

They sent a cheque to the felon that sprang from an Irish bog;
They healed the spavined cab-horse; they housed the homeless dog;
And they sent (you may call me a liar), when felon and beast were paid,
A cheque, for enough to live on, to the last of the Light Brigade.

O thirty million English that babble of England's might,
Behold there are twenty heroes who lack their food to-night;
Our children's children are lisping to "honour the charge they made - "
And we leave to the streets and the workhouse the charge of the Light Brigade!


Recessional

Time to revive the thread once more :)

This is my own translation of a known old greek poem (early 20th century) by Constantine Palamas.
Although i do not like the rest of his work, this particular piece, in the first verses, is very powerful in the original Greek.

Anyway, here it is:

Digenes and Charon

Mounted on his horse, Charon takes Digenes to Hades,
-and others too- the human herd cries, harms itself.
And he holds them tied in the back of his horse,
the wind of courage, the star of beauty.
And as if he was not stepped upon by Charon's foot
only Akritas, without fear, looks at the rider.

"I am Akritas, Charon, i do not pass with years,
you touched me and did not feel me, in the marbled fields,
I am the indestructible soul of Salamis,
to the seven-hilled city i brought the sword of the Greeks,
I do not lose myself in the Tartara, i only replenish my forces,
and i appear again, and ressurect races!"

Some notes:

Digenes and Akritas are the same person.
The seven-hilled city is Constantinople
Tartara is another term for Hades, or the depth of the earth where the dead or banished are.

Well, I was about to do my own when I spotted this which is fantastic:

Attention, all you little polysyllabic Elevens,
you elves all together from here and there,
that horrid hooker thinks that I am a joke,
she won't give back my little notepad of poems,
if you can imagine that. The nasty nerve of it.
Let's follow her and clamor to get them back.

You ask who she is? She is the one you see
strutting in the streets swaying her hips galore,
laughing aloud with the face of a drooling hound.

Stand all around her and ask the notebooks back.

"You rotten hooker, give back the books of verse,
return, you dirty b_tch, the books of verse."

She does nothing! Scum you are, you whore.
whatever is worse or lower, you really are.
But don't think that this is the end of it!
If nothing more let's squeeze a bit of blush
from that brazen dogface smile of hers.
Scream all together in a yet louder voice
"Dirty whore, return the books of verse,
Return, you dirty whore, the books of verse."

We are getting nowhere, she stands as stiff as stone.
You have to change your manner of address,
if you want to win her favor and succeed:

"O Lady chaste and fair, the notebooks if you please."
 
I apologize for the long silence... In my defence, I haven´t been reading any (good) poetry lately.
 
Let's try to revive this. I attach a translation of Atanas Dalchev's "The Books", translated an year ago with fellow forum writers from a Bulgarian literature site.

The Books
Dedicated to K. Gulubov

In front of me, alone, the book
Is open day and night.
And to my mind as to my look
Unknown the world is quite.

The birds do pass and fly away,
Days come and go they do,
And like some pages, day by day,
I weary leaf them through...

To wear out years in reading just
About some other's life
When yours, to every one is dust,
So deaf, not worth the strife!

Oh call of love, you were not near
My heart and will ne'er be!
And for the books' sake I lost here
My life, the world and me.

I'll try and re-revive it with some Housman - some of these I can do from memory; he's a very easy poet for that:

From Clee to heaven the beacon burns,
The shires have seen it plain,
From north and south the sign returns

Because 'tis fifty years to-night

Loveliest of Trees

Loveliest of trees, the cherry now
Is hung with bloom along the bough,
And stands about the woodland ride

And since to look at things in bloom

The Oracles

It seems that sometimes it is time for poetry, and sometimes it is not. Today it was, and I had another look at Rilke:

Autumn

The leaves fall, fall as from afar,
as if in heaven faraway gardens do decay;
they fall with gestures saying nay.

And in the nights the heavy earth does fall
from every star into solitude.

We all do fall. This hand does,
And look at others: it is in all.

And yet there's One, which all this fall
infinitely soft in his hand does hold.

Autumn day

Lord: it is time. Summer was grand.
Lay your shadow upon the dials,
and upon the floors the winds let loose.

Order the last fruit to be full;
give it two more southern days.
Push them to completion and plea
the last sweetness in the heavy wine to be.

I also had another look at Rilke's Liebes-Lied, but shan't post that as it only appeared to differ slightly from the version already quoted earlier.

A bit of Irish poetry, to commemorate Easter Week, 1916.

Who fears to speak of Easter Week?
Who dares its fate deplore?
