What Movies Have You Watched? 17: Blowed Up Real Good

The Vast of Night - interesting little indie sci-fi film with clear Twilight Zone vibes. I enjoyed it, though it dragged a bit in spots and felt a bit aimless. Its tiny budget also hurt it at times, especially at the end where it became sort of hard to piece what was happening together and the day-for-night filter homage became a little too strong. That said, the director had an absolutely breathtaking tracking shot and the cinematography was pretty impressing, with the director managing to make extended shots feel tightly paced.
7/10 if you can buy into the concept, 4/10 if not.

Spoiler ending discussion :
I think the ending was a mistake. Either they should have left the aliens as a mystery or 'maybe magic, maybe mundane' set of affairs (like seeing a pattern of lights fade into a cloud) or they should have let the characters survive with the clear implication nobody believed their story or they weren't sure themselves what they saw. I also felt like what happened to the people 'helping' them who may have been under alien control was never really explained, and felt like they were inserted solely to move the plot along.
I also think the actress was a bit too young looking for the role, with the implied romance between her and the disc jockey feeling a bit creepy, especially as his age is left unclear.

Dune. I have only just started it, but I really like the aesthetics and "feel". Already I suspect it could use more inner dialogue being explicit.

Collin Farrell as the Penguin, in the new Batman movie:

One wonders why they had to cast Farrell, since he looks nothing like himself :) But the movie may be good (for a Batman movie)

Free Guy - So much fun :D. Watched with wife and kids. Another great merger of old pop culture with current pop culture through the media of videogames. Its essentially another Wreck It Ralph / Ready Player One type of movie. So... not original, but still a joy to watch with the kids.

My favourite moment... and I'll add... perfectly illustrative of this new genre of film... was at the end, when my wife and I were singing the closing credits song together, word for word... and I asked my kids why Mommy and I both knew this song they had never heard before by heart, and my kids said in unison, with no hesitation whatsoever "Cause its OLD!" :old:

Then, as if on queue, a character was shown on screen doing the "floss" dance... and I said to my kids "And I can't do that dance! Know why?" Again in unison, my kids replied, "CAUSE YOU'RE OLD!!"

I love it:D

Is Dune streaming somewhere?

Pfffffft! Just Watch the Scary Movies. They cover just about every trope about American horror movies.
Just make sure you are in the proper mood before watching them.
Mmmmm.

As always, you should just watch the Scream trilogy.

+1 for Free Guy. Its a silly film, don't expect much depth.. But it had more than I expected from Ryan Reynolds, and a few proper Lols.

Dune - Beautiful, well-scripted, and sure to win a stack of awards for realization, special effects, costumes etc. 9/10.

I am a movie watching machine.

Lucy - This is one of those movies that was just so stupid.. but so good.. The cinematography, the action scenes, the transitions between scenes, the characters, the balance.. So good. But so goddamn stupid
Doctor Sleep - I put this on as soon as I heard it was a King-penned sequel to The Shining. I really liked it overall, but I don't know if I like it as a sequel. The Shining will feel different when I watch it now, that's the only reason
The Forgotten Battle - A really good WW2 flick with some of the best WW2 era battle scenes I've ever seen.
Life - This movie most reminded me of Alien. Sort of. Scary space movie sort of deal, but it doesn't really start like that. All in all I wouldn't really have compared it to Alien, but there's eventual similarities. Worth a watch
The Hunger Games - The actors in this movie try way too hard to be emo, but the strong lead was compelling enough for me to watch until the end. This movie would have been better if the baddies weren't so cartoony.
Wrath of Man - Might be the best action flick starring Statham that I've seen. That's not saying much, but this one had a solid story, if a bit complex, and overall I found it pretty entertaining.
The Foreigner - 70% of this movie is Jackie Chan terrorizing London with MacGyver-like explosions. Occasional fist/kick-to-face fights make this worth a watch
Zodiac - Turns out the Zodiac killer was an actual thing and this movie explains what happened
Yesterday - This movie was really fun. Cool concept and they more or less nailed it.
Pixels - Stupid premise, pretty solid execution. I watched this on one of those evenings when all you want is some flashy mindless entertainment.. The gaming references were fun, too.
Land of the Lost - A Will Ferrell Movie I didn't know exists. Overall not bad. Pretty much what I expected.
Father of the Year - Slightly better than average comedy. I don't really remember much about it tbh
A Million Ways to Die in the West - A movie that doesn't take itself very seriously, which I found a bit refreshing. Westerns can be so uptight
Croupier - A British movie about a casino heist. I liked it
London has Fallen - A movie about terrorists attacking the UK and of course it's all about the American president. Overall pretty entertaining
The Other Guys - Silly Will Ferrell & Marky Mark cop movie spoof w/ average jokes but a couple fun moments.
Horrible Bosses - I liked this movie quite a bit. No, I don't want to harm my boss
Flight - This was actually pretty good overall. I thought I was going to stop watching after the crash, which happens about a half an hour into the movie IIRC.. but Denzel kept me entertained
The Guilty - I put this movie on because the first movie w/ Jake Gyllenhaal & 911 dispatch I saw was very good. This one was okay
Anchorman 2 - I don't even remember anything about the first one, but must have seen it. This one was pretty much what I was expecting.. an average amusing sequel
Oxygen - I did not think I was going to make it through this movie either, but kept watching. Interesting concept

There's probably a handful of movies on other streaming platforms that I watched that didn't make this list. But this is getting too long anyway

Almost the only one in your list which I've watched. I agree with the ‘stupid premise, pretty solid execution’ diagnosis.

It's a movie about an indestructible space-octopus. I didn't manage to watch all the way to the end :)
It also stars the actress who is Paul's mother in the new Dune.

Don Juan de Marco  The first Johnny Depp movie I ever saw. :) 16-year-old Depp is brought into a NY psychiatric hospital believing he is Don Juan. Depp placed into the care of Marlon Brando, the top psychiatrist. :health:

I have no idea about this character though and it doesn't tie into the MU as far as I can see.. or does it?
Given that Venom has always (AFAIK?) been associated primarily/only with the Spider-Man lineup, I would assume that those character rights are also still held (hostage) by Sony — Tom Holland's Spidey was only included in the MCU under a special arrangement — so no, probably not.

My younger son went to see the new Venom movie last Sunday, and he said it was good. But he has the same opinion of Star Wars VII–IX, Michael Bay's Transformers movies, and the Jurassic World movies...
