While We Wait: Boredom Strikes Back

If updates are your main source of intelligence, you're not asking the moderator enough PMed questions.

My (admittedly limited) experience as moderator leads me to disagree. Some people who PMed me for intel or asked on IRC read the whole update; some didn't.

Reading the entire update isn't necessary 90% of the time. If it doesn't relate to you even remotely then it's really not worth knowing immediately. Information can be skipped.

I didn't really read the Chinese bits of Dachs's updates, but I sent him quite a number of questions.

I agree with karalysia.

i think its a respect you pay to the moderator's efforts.

If you don't read the whole update why are you in the NES and why should the mod bother?

Because the mod enjoys it? I mean, with the three SprylliNESes I spent much more time persuading players to not quit than I did on updating. :p

The mod should ensure that every bit of the update is potentially interesting to all players if the mod expects all players to read every bit of the update. On the other hand, that's true of most NESes, and in most cases it is to most players' advantage to read the whole update. But when it isn't remotely relevant to the NES whether they do or not? Hardly. Just as long as the players notice everything they need to notice, then it's fine.

But when they don't, from my experience, that's really irritating. Seeing the players completely fail to raise taxes when the state is about to go bankrupt (as I remember nearly happened in SprylliNES II), because they haven't noticed the bit in the update where it says the state's about to go bankrupt, is properly infuriating.

If you don't read the whole update why are you in the NES and why should the mod bother?

Using information that your nation doesn't know IC is the same as cheating. Your nation wouldn't have a clue to the majority of the things mentioned in other peoples sections.

Just use some good old doublethink and read the whole update but don't allow yourself to use it all, then.

The way I see it if it is in the update it is public knowledge... if the country did not want it public then they should have told the Mod in their orders that it should be kept private. (At least that is the way I do it.)

I make a habit of reading everything even if it is not related to my country, you never know what you will find that may help you prepare, whether they are preparations for war, increased trade (thus allowing another country to do something sneaky), etc...

I just had an idea and so I started a NES. :) A bit wierd, but hopefully it'll turn into something that's interesting somehow.

Even if an entire update isn't relevant for each individual nation, it ought to be interesting enough to be worth reading.

Thank you, I am sorry I am so slow. Several things are being prepared for the upcoming one. Climate and terrain maps for the newly discovered lands in Diascia, New Spain and Joania. An overview of religion in western Europe and a crisis among the anointed.

Hi there. I'm hosting EltNESIII: Some Assembly Required. Don't let the name fool you- no assembly is actually required. A fresh start NES on a map of earth, with custom military units and cool trade routes. Check it out.

I know people might be hesitant of joining until after it has had a few updates, due to it being a fresh start, and not knowing whether it will last. Or, other reason here. It's okay. I forgive you. I am anxious to start (but will pace myself) and get it rolling.

I can attest to that. I have whole IRC logs of chats with Kentharu.

EDIT:
And to throw some of my opinion in this, it doesn't matter to me if people read updates. Just ask questions! Lots of questions! I enjoy them/it helps me to know what players are up to and I often adjust updates to better reflect their actions.

I very rarely read a whole update, I scan for my section and perhaps my rivals. I might get around to reading the whole update if NESing is getting slow, but only really a peruse. I spend more time with pm's, wall messages and the stats post.

I pepper the mod with questions

I joined ton of NESes recently (last 3-4 months) and so many died or never went.
I want them to GO GO GO!....
